One of the weird things about this game is that between sessions or running over pedestrians, intentionally provoking car accidents and shooting cops I still feel obliged to go out of my way to recover that stolen wallet or purse for some random person on the street.

GTA 5 has plenty of genuinely comedic moments. I'll forever get a smirk thinking about the cutscene where Trevor trips over Franklin's garden fence lol. Or basically anytime Trevor and Lamar talk.
When where Trevor tips is actually improvised and they went with it. Makes it even more hilarious ahaha.
There are funny moments, but I think what DavidOZ was explaining is that there are also a lot of missed hits when it comes to humor in the games story

Franklin and Lamar have the best chemistry, which makes sense since they're lifelong friends. I'm glad the writers were able to convey that fact through the dialogue. You can tell they harbor some animosity towards each other but in the end would take a bullet for the other.
Imagine getting your son a game he's been begging for, and once you finally buy it, the first scene is BDSM.

42:00 I also notice in the final missions if you choose to kill Michael, Trevor will not help you but if you choose to kill Trevor, Michael does help you. Really depressing to think the only person that makes Trevor feel human would turn his back at any moment. Understandable considering how Trevor is but still very sad.
I think its more of a code Trevor has. Trevor ,in all his sadistic nature , suprisingly has a code of never betray and he is loyal. This is why he hates michael in the end of the game and "wants" to kill him but when Franklin chooses to go after Michael Trevor will hate Franklin too.
Whoa Trevor loves michael that's why you assume he hates michael. He doesn't hate michael , he hates what michael has become. It is sad.
But Trevor is the moral compass of the game.
Trevor's path is the right path.if you kill trevor ... Michael tells franklin that surviving is winning and that's all there is. Franklin at 25 has become as jaded and cynical as michael at 45.
If franklin kills michael he immediately seeks to reconnect with Lamar who despite being an idiot has always been loyal. Trevor sees his relationship with michael in Lamar and franklin.
He sees lamar only wanting to seek love and respect from franklin and franklin tossing him aside.

You should watch TheProfessional's video on why Dimitri betrayed Niko. He goes on comparing Dimitri's psychopathy with Trevor's sociopathy.
To sum up his video, psychopaths are liars and manipulators. They are sadistic, just like sociopaths.
The first difference is that sociopaths are obvious while psychopaths take a long time to figure out they're psychopaths.
Second, sociopaths don't care if they die while psychopaths does everything they can to remain alive so that they keep on inflicting pain and suffering to others.
Third, sociopaths just don't care they're inflicting pain on others while psychopaths enjoy it.
Fouth, sociopaths have a certain moral code that they will never break while psychopaths don't have any.

About the C ending, I personally think that the "no consequence" and "fairytale" aspect of letting all three characters off the hook is essentially a play on Michael's point of view. He thinks he's a good guy and that's the reason why Franklin spared him. Him being the "good guy" convinced the universe to let him and his friends live despite the hypocrisy.
I also think that only on the basis of fairness, Trevor also lived on because you can ask either Michael or Franklin, even monsters like them admit that Trevor is too much to handle.This is actually both Michael and Franklin indirectly refusing to admit that if they continue down this path, they too will end up just as deprived and broken as the man they think is worse than them. The hypocrisy just keeps piling up but it is what it is.
Well the slat is cleaned for them as Dave removes their criminal records. However, they have to be the ones to change which is what the ending represents and why Trevor is the only one without a car. You also can see this in the optional conversations/friend hangouts and it shows how far the characters have come.
Michael: at the beginning we first see him as a man literally running from himself and he ends up pushing everyone away as a consequence. He has to come to terms with the fact that no he is not in fact the good guy. This really gets going after we see him out in Sandy Shores and he sees how his friend has been living like an animal for the past nine years which is why he starts being nicer to Trevor after that point. He has to apologize to everyone and not like say "I'm sorry" without any effort to change because he had been doing that for pretty much the entire game. When the truth comes out he can't hide from the consequences of his actions anymore. He could have run when Trevor was crawling out of the grave to (what we assume) attack him but Michael stays and tries to explain himself.
Franklin: at the beginning we first see him as a person being pressured by his community and family to go down a path he doesn't want to. He has a tough choice but rather than being an idiot like Michael was all those years ago he actually talks it over with Lamar and Lamar rather than acting like Trevor did to Michael accepts him for who he is because they are homies and in turn family for life. This is why he had the decision to make. Choose A and become like Michael always trying to pin your bad actions and choices on someone worse than you. Choose B and become like Devin Weston. Greedy and without anyone who cares about you. Choose C and get to take control of your own destiny.
Trevor: one of the saddest elements in the game is that Trevor changed but not in the way Michael and Franklin did. They are leaving the criminal life. He is staying because he is going to continue to take out his pain and suffering on the world. However the fact that he didn't kill or betray Franklin or Michael was a huge step in the right direction. And even more startling is the fact that he apologized to Michael after the ending. I knew Michael was going to but Trevor? I actually started crying when it happened because it was really unexpected

Expanding on your point about Option C, while it may be obvious to the players that they’re all gonna alright in the end. For all the characters knew, it was more than likely gonna end with their bullet-riddled bodies being buried in shallow graves, it was the ultimate Hail Mary. It showed that while they all had their differences with each other, they were able to put them aside for the “greater good” and not stab each other in the back just to save their own individual skins (it’s especially big for Michael for obvious reasons.)

The story in this game is so overlooked. That shit in Ludendorff was some of the tensest shit I've played recently. Rockstar is the king of world design and storytelling, not online.

@@joshuabreurken2424 There was a moment where I was in first person mode leaving ammunation and Trevor randomly pops up to hang (right before The Big Score I think). I decline because I wanted to get to the mission. I start randomly talking to a girl outside of the store and he's around the corner. I guess I bump Trevor some how by accident and he wasted me. Made me choose to kill him. He's too unpredictable. I hate Michael overall for him being a snake but Trevor's liability level was way too high for me. Honestly I feel like the only reason people love C so much is because it gives all the characters a chance to shine and it's a happy ending but realistically you don't let a Trevor live.

Realistically if we were put into Franklin's or Michael's shoes in the game's last moments we'd waste Trevor in a heartbeat. I mean there's a reason the FIB ask you to kill him beyond "it's personal" like it is for Devin wanting Michael dead.

To me, I always felt the humor was supposed to be rhetorical. It's a producer's chance to show the people playing it what they're really like. It's like when Kojima made everyone play as Raiden in MGS2 because everyone just wanted to play as Snake (an augmented, superior version of themself) instead of some green kid (you, the player).
No one gets this! It's a parody. The Housers are British and it's been long known that gta is designed to make fun of American culture. Not pick a side, but literally joke about the absurdities of the extremes of all of us.

The humor for me comes from the fact that it's made by a bunch of Scottish people from the UK who are taking the absolute piss out of America. All the social commentary in the GTA games comes from that outsider perspective. It's what the scots call "patter" or "banter". It's biting, but also good natured. That's why there's no single political message, it's them looking at America from the outside, like watching monkeys in a zoo.
That feeling you like from Niko being an outsider? Every game was made through that lens irl.

My favorite was when I switched to Trevor at one point and he was screaming at some bicyclists and I was compelled to run them over simply because...well, Trevor lined it up and I didnt see why I shouldnt take the shot.

It's a great game with a lot of effort put into it. It feels like Rockstar wanted this to be their Grand opus. But because the game has 3 playable characters, some things feel left out of focus. I mean, once Trevor joins the story, Franklin is kind of left in the background. He automatically gets a big mansion by just doing one mission. The game's antagonists are interesting, but they don't get much screen time. The desert that Trevor lives in feels empty, despite it having bikers and meth heads. Missed opportunities for drug wars. The ballas are underused in this game. I was hoping Franklin would take over balla territory and start wars.
The game is great, but the story kinda feels empty and mediocre. Its hard to tell what I exactly mean, but I'll try. Personally I think that the game is too sarcastic, and I just dont like the atmosphere too much. Its a decent idea to make a parody of Los Angeles with all the fake celebrity stuff, but personally I would've liked something else. The game parodises some things so much that it feels outdated nowadays. The map is great, but the desert and mountains feel empty, even tho they make like 70% of the map (The city is great tho). The characters were good, but not as good as some other Rockstar's characters (Arthur Morgan, Niko etc.). I didnt really get same kind of bond with the characters compared to Arthur for example. The story is way too short, probably because of the 3 characters. The game is good, dont get me wrong, but isnt as great as other Rockstar games
Their grand opus ended up being Red Dead Redemption 2 and I'm glad about that

I think a better idea would've been to focus the narrative on just Michael and Trevor, and then R* could do a dlc similar to Ballad of Gay Tony where you play as Franklin rising up from street hustler to career criminal. Make it like an homage to San Andreas, hell make Lamar a second playable character in it too.

It's funny how I can call myself far left, but have a totally different take on the story. I thought it was HYSTERICALLY funny.
The only thing is I thought Franklin and his father-son relationship with Michael got sidelined after Trevor joins the story. So Franklin gets underdeveloped after the first third of the game.
Although Franklin gave me one of my favorite character switch moments where I switched to him and he was in his bedroom ironing socks.

The political commentary is meant to be all over the place. It is meant to turn one’s own self seriousness against themselves, and point out the absurdity of politics as a whole. It is not meant to make a singular statement or give singular stances. It is meant to be taken as a whole. It’s a giant fuck you to as many people as they could.

That whole thing with the GTA 4 intro happened to me too. Loaded it up, so excited to play my first gta (I was like 9) and my mums sat in the room and so is my sister. First thing we hear is some guy yelling “daddy’s back bitches!” With a woman whipping him in the back. Lmao I was so embarrassed
when I was 9 I was riding my bike, exploring the woods etc..so sad you were playing GTA4. Theres a reason for the 18 rating. Hope you dont grow up to be a sociopath!

I'd leave the house and have adventures all day at 10 years old and was perfectly safe. Didn't need to be monitored and tracked. Games like this are not healthy for children. GTAV feels like it's a final away from being the end.
Whether it's Tanisha getting targeted, Trevor losing his mind or Michael ensuring his identity stays dead by any means to keep his family safe - there's a final few hours missing.
It is one of the reasons why the story is so memorable, because you still have some space to imagine, not to mention the characters simply being more memorable than IV's.

I wish there was more game analysis. Especially like this one. I think he should do character analysis. Like Dutch from rdr2 and Trevor and Michael from gta 5. Cj from san andreas. I think character analysis is better but a game analysis is greatly appreciated.

Tanisha is actually real hypocrite. She is talking about friendship and all that but then she is going on some unknown doctor or some shit for herself, instead of stepping up and doing things for herself.
If you look at her lifeinvader, it isnt just her going off with a doctor or some shit but accepting his efforts to wipe out her past ties by criticizing her "hood" appearance and dialect.
She basically succeeds at cutting the ties that Franklin tried to (and eventually didnt, instead acknowledging the role those ties have in his new life).

Man! You’ve done such a good job covering a game that I have dismissed in the past due to how loud and clumsy it can come across as. Even though I really love GTA IV, I have come out of this video with new appreciation for GTA V and it’s vision.

My mom is a major rule follower and big on doing what is right morally, but I've been playing GTA V again on PS3 when I visit her house. Interestingly enough, she finds the game fascinating and appreciates how ridiculous it is. She also likes how much there is to it and how impressive the huge world is. I'm amazed to find that she likes this game lol
Tbh I've also always thought that the main draw of GTA 5 is that it allows you to step out of line and misbehave in a relatively realistic world in ways you'd never dare / want to in real life. Perhaps it even has a cathartic quality to it.
But that's true of all of the gta games.

On the question you asked about if you act different depending on the character, when the little ambient mission come up i act differently, as franklin if i saw a guy stealing something i would help them cause hes lived that life of petty crime too, as micheal i would help the victim cause he would see such petty stuff as below him and relish the opportunity to act the good guy and as trevor i would kill everyone and take what i please cause thats pretty much his MO

I always end up acting subconsciously different playing each character to their associated behaviors, that’s a good way of putting it I guess
Ye I’m like that, I try and be the good guy with Michael as that’s what he wants to see himself as, I play like a normal person but break a few laws occasionally as Franklin and go all out as Trevor doing anything I feel like. I also play different radios depending on who I’m playing as, Michael is always Lo’s Santos rock radio, Franklin is west coast classics and Trevor is channel x or rebel radio

I usually keep the wallet each time, it's only $500 and the cheap ass idiots who you return it to that were stupid enough to let themselves be mugged in the first place only give you a lousy ten percent as a reward! Screw it, I can get three times that amount robbing a 24/7!
While I do see where you're coming from with the criticism that the game essentially tries to take on too much political commentary at once and ends up falling flat of anything meaningful or comical, I interpret the world of GTA V more as a satirical parody of America as a whole, in essence one giant political commentary instead of hundreds. And if you interpret it that way, I think the game does a great job. The world is essentially a depiction of the worst of what America has to offer, and I think that's why the game doesn't really have any sort of "left" or "right" agenda. I think it's more meant to sort of expose the moral contradictions of America by parodying everything.
I think the best example of this is with the TV show Fame Or Shame and the mission where Michael and Trevor save Tracey from auditioning. Fame Or Shame is obviously a parody of shows like America's Got Talent and X-Factor where contestants perform for judges who either berate them and crush their dreams or give them praise, and it's all dramatized for the sake of "good TV". Lazlow is a parody of Hollywood personalities who exploit their power and get rich without doing anything particularly meaningful while many people living in poverty work their asses off. There's no real political agenda behind it. It's simply a parody of American entertainment and TV personalities to expose how fucked up it really is.
Now you can argue that the way the game parodies more controversial topics like income inequality, feminism, and racism might have left and right agendas behind them, but I would actually argue that they don't because I don't think the game itself ever really takes a stance on any of these topics. For example, the cutscenes with Franklin's feminist aunt and her friends jogging down the sidewalk while chanting feminist phrases. These cutscenes are not meant to depict the notion that feminism is good or bad. It is once again just a satirical mockery of feminist protests. One might argue that just that notion alone has a "right" agenda attached to it, but I think that it falls right in line with the rest of the mockery throughout the game, and thus it's simply just another piece of the puzzle, the whole puzzle being America.
I believe that the world of GTA V should be taken seriously in the same way that a comedy should be taken seriously. The jokes are not necessarily meant to be taken seriously, but they are based around serious topics and the topics are the subjects of mockery and absurdity. Personally, I found all of the jokes hilarious and I appreciated how they took serious, controversial topics and handled them in a way that was light-hearted.

I get the criticism of sexist overtones with Michael's family but when it comes to Jimmy and his racism I think it's meant to be more of an intentional criticism. Paticularly a response to the vicarious living through characters within video games or just in general through "larger-than-life" personas within media (fictional or otherwise)
I've seen people interpret this as specifically white people wanting to connect on a superficial level to "black culture" but I take it as a more of a general criticism. I think my opinion could be supported by the fact that along with living vicariously through Franklin, Jimmy also enjoys the idea of being a rugged military type considering his obsession with FPS to the point of cosplaying as a soldier with nightvision goggles and all (if you don't remember he wears it in the mission "Meltdown")
I gotta wonder if outside of the comedy of juxatposing Jimmy in a soldier outfit teabagging next to actually armed militia members is possibly making a statement on the want of the typical Blackwater (I think they've rebranded by some new stupid name recently actually but I'm not sure) soldier wanting to assume that "rugged and masculine" identity of a US soldier.
Maybe it is all for laughs and I'm reading too much into it. This is the problem with such broad political commentary.
You’re right. Jimmy is merely struggling to find out what it means to be a man so he latched onto various ideas of what a man is (Franklin & the Hood life) or being a soldier who kills for country. His only ideas of what a man should be come from media, and Michael.

It’s really sad actually and it makes him feel like a real person since many struggle to do so. But you’d only notice that if you pay real attention to the small details which generally a lot of people don’t. They just see the comedic overtones of his story and people don’t take it seriously since it’s all for laughs but when you see the reality of it, it’s actually really sad and well written

I'm not gonna lie bro, i watched this video through, and to me it kinda seems like you probably didn't like the humor because it was directed at you.
Yup, he keeps going on about some "responsibility" the game should take, or an "authorial stance". But that's not the point, the humor in GTA is supposed to showcase the absurdity of and state of American politics, not pick a side or show any moral leanings. It lets the player digest it however they want. That's it.

Psychology. The flashiness of GTA as a brand covers up the depth of the characters. That's why I think this game works and is so polarizing simultaneously. It's good at passing as surface level while almost always dealing with real issues on a level that requires analysis, which is exactly why meandering politically by jabbing at common extremes is probably the most pragmatic choice.
I personally don't think the bit with Jimmy talking about getting his shit together actually portrayed failed humor affecting the scenario. There's a big difference between a legitimate joke and one that's meant to fail. I would consider that the greatest fault of this game; It makes a statement more than trying to have likeable characters a lot, but if you get past trying to be appealed to, which is definitely jabbed at by certain voice lines, then the character's generally give you a reason to like them by the end of the game.
In a sense, this emphasizes the first (post-intro) portion of this vid; Going for the idea of "this character reminds you of someone you know" rather than "hey, I like this guy, let's remember this guy" emphasizes the sense of "oh, this is like real life but with a safe sense of catharsis in breaking away from the norm." I kind of preferred GTA San Andreas because the characters made it seem more fun, but I respect GTA5 more because the characters actually make me consider how they function as real people, and it is kind of wild to be getting that much psychological nuance from a series criticized for being bad for kid's mentalities by people who don't actually understand video games.
Idk, something about Tracey singing about how she doesn't want to have daddy issues on national television did make me go "hey, look, this moment of vulnerability in this sea of shit is actually kind of beautiful. I get why it's so hard to get there when nobody ever learned how to be vulnerable."

That point about playing differently when using a specific character really resonated with me... I remember my first couple of playthroughs, I would only play golf with michael, stole more cars with franklin and was generally less upset when trevor died compared to the others furing free roam.. even with clothing and vehicles I made conscious or sub conscious decisions to buy certain things because to me... this is something trevor would drive or franklin would buy or michael would wear etc

I love this game because I can see myself as young Franklin trying to get up in the world (less the crimes), and working hard to make something out of myself, going from meaningless job working up the latter until where I am now. Which leads me to see myself as Michael, a washed up has been who made it to the top and suddenly finds himself bored with life, (minus the crime), I struggled a lot to get to where I am today in a better place than I could ever imagine but I am bored, the joy of life is gone. I am a loving father, husband and family member but I feel empty inside. Which leads me to see myself as Trevor a maniac who wants to let loose (minus the drugs, crime and violence). I don't see Trevor as a maniac I see myself in Trevor as someone not having a care in the world, gling back to your roots after having made it. Kind of how Frank Reynolds in the show Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia despite being a multi millionaire lives with Charlie in extreme poverty to get in touch with his roots. Trevor lives in a filthy trailer, not a care in the world. He does what he wants when he wants and just is. I find myself bored with responsibility, the routine of the rat race and miss the energy I had when I was young making my way in the world. Sometimes I just want to bug out and disappear, get in touch with my roots and be nobody in a nameless trailer park. I would never abandon my family though, I love my kids too much. Maybe when they are older I can bug out and live like a caveman. But that is the beauty of video games. You can live out your fantasy without doing it. I have played this campaign over ten times. I enjoy it every single time.

The story in 5 vs 4's is a night and day difference. The plot and characters in 5 seemed to try everything in their power to be as loud, shallow, and obnoxious as possible because 12 year olds find that hilarious, but 4 actually tried to make you care.

With 5 they opted for everyone to be very silly, over the top, and more like one-dimensional stereotypes of Americans rather than the more down to earth approach 4 took.
4 was a serious crime drama that tried to put you into the shoes of the protagonist and take him seriously, thus characters involved with him felt grounded and fleshed out as well. 5 tries to be an American sitcom and thus the characters are less like genuine fleshed out people and are simply there to crack (not that funny) jokes/drive the action forward. Fine if you don't care about characters or story as much, but you can't say this approach compares to 4.
@@andrea_ottaviano_augusto88 Uh, not so fast. 5 had some of the most glaring issues and even some of the worst ai in the series such as:
-Aiming at 1 pedestrian makes everyone around the person instantly run and scream in perfect sync even when they don't see you, making them feel technically bugged and automatic/artificial
-Most pedestrians die in 1 punch and put up NO fight, thus hand to hand combat is worse than 3's from ****2001****
-Police have auto targeting pistols that lock on at ridiculous distances
-The physics/ai for cop pit manuevers is unbelievably horrid and lazy (they mostly ram the back of your car blindly while your front tires are programmed to snap sideways because the devs were to lazy to put in proper physics that made sense) Again, worse than the FIRST 3D GTA
-Animals are programmed to trigger the wanted level if they see you comit crimes in the middle of nowhere (this is not a joke, this is actually in the game files)
-Aiming is not nearly as snappy or precise as 4's, largely thanks to the aim "smoothing" they added that gives it delayed acceleration (with mouse+keyboard it's probably better, but GTA games have a greater emphasis on driving than third person shooting mechanics, and driving is better with a controller)
-The wait time to get rid of a 1 star wanted level is now about 3x longer than 4's, adding tedium to the gameplay (and no, having to wait in a safe area for 3x longer doesn't make it more challenging, it's just boring)
-For the first time in the series, they were too lazy to add patroling cop cars to the game, they only spawn when wanted, otherwise they magically don't exist in the universe
-Traffic ai is either bugged or intentionally broken to add artificial difficulty (the traffic sometimes tries to randomly swerve into your lane to hit you if you drive at high speeds)
-I heard they added artificial difficulty in other areas, (I'm 90% sure police magically detecting your general area even when hidden) and I don't doubt that considering the other problems I mentioned with ai)
And GTA 4 had the best gameplay in the series in several ways, like how dynamic the physics are, how brutal the combat feels, great sound design for weapons in gunfights, and having by FAR the best cheat system (simply dial a cheat once, and boom, select it at any time on the phone's menu). Not to mentions ai/physics that worked properly which were downgraded or butchered in 5 like I previously pointed out.

I watch a lot of TH-cam channels about film analysis, like "Filmento", "Every frame a painting", etc...but, I've been looking for similar channels for videogames, and finally...finally I've found one, I really appreciate your take on this game, I enjoyed and relate to your analysis on GTA V, looking forward to the Red dead redemption video, you've earned yourself a subscriber.
The game isn’t bad. It’s just been overplayed. I remember the first time seeing it and being amazed at the graphics, new story with three different main characters, and limitless activities to do. Imagine if we had to play GTA IV for 10 years before the next release, we’d pick it apart relentlessly too. It’s not the game per se, but rather the devs milking every last nickel, dime, and penny out of it.
Literally forgot Tanesha existed. Interest concept (but cliched) to have the black woman who grew up around gangs leave that life. Too bad she doesn't have any real character development.
What's more sad is that she isn't too involved in the story anyways

When you approach GTAV from a leftist city bound perspective, you misread all of the point of it. You have to view it from outside of California, and outside of Los Angeles. Also, you need to understand that California is a failed state, and LA is a perfect example as to why. Those are the first things you need to come to terms with. While V doesn't have the tent cities of illegal aliens, drug addicts, and homeless veterans, it represents the general ethos of it. Which is more prophetic than any politician, pundit, or glorified commentator. I'm posting this in 2022, and Rockstar's view of a fictionalized future of LA is so perfectly on point, it's astounding. I appreciate that you analyzed this game, based on your institutional education, but your review hasn't aged well. Rockstar actually p0wned you within the game itself. What would the three protagonist think of LA today? What would their reactions be...now? Pretty much exactly how the story mode plays out.

Dude David, this was an incredible analysis of a game that I loved playing, thought had a pretty good narrative, but also fell short on some key aspects in “rockstars philosophy” or whatever the hell we choose to call it. Honestly I kind of just put this on as something to listen to while doing the dishes, and actually had to stop the video, finish my task, and then come back to with a cup of tea, and comfy seat. Bra-fucking-vo brother. I would say unequivocally your English Lit. Education has not gone to waste in the slightest with this engaging masterpiece.

He’s way out of his depth and now the FIB want him to kill Trevor or he’s dead and a billionaire who owns a private army wants him to kill Michael or he’s dead. Obviously Franklin can’t take on these guys on his own. The canon ending is that he gets Michael and Trevor together to ambush Merryweather and the FIB and take out all their enemies that crossed the main characters throughout the game. So clearly they don’t have to kill each other they all survive and are in good terms at the end. Idk what ur talking about as if you HAVE to choose between M or T as if there isn’t a 3rd option

I have commented on youtube maybe less than a handful of times since the platform launched. I want to take a moment and thank you for all your videos, I came across this one due to a post in the subreddit but have since started to watch all your videos. Huge fan of long/essay form videos and analysis so it's all right up my alley. I am looking forward to your future videos and wish you all the best in your youtube endeavours as I think there is a very big audience for this content yet untapped, it's a niche you are really good at and hope to see capitalize on it.
A few notes, if I may:
- Really enjoy the balance of subjective and objective as you do your videos, I find this point hard to articulate, but often it's really easy for these videos to lean heavily (or try to) in one direction and they tend to lose their charm. Taken to their extreme, they just become akin long form review or a cold statement of historical facts about the title.
- This seems to get better in the new videos, but the pacing and organization of your older videos was at times harder to follow. (Pointing this out, because kudos on improving) Your audio quality is superb and you have a naturally pleasing voice/tone.
- Some visual aid at times might help the flow of your ideas/video, especially when you reference an event or a theme in a few different sections of the video. Nothing crazy, just a keyword, a cycle/graph etc anything to support the specificity of what is being discussed. I am very visual and end up scrolling back and forth to take notes or think about something and I noticed channels that do even a rudimentary attempt at visualization make it much easier to follow.
- A few bullet points that pop up, or references on the screen if possible would go a long way. You mentioned the pervasiveness of the western in your RDR video, while I understood the main point as you highlighted that in the beginning of the video, it might carry nuance that I might have missed because the western trope can differ drastically from a within a NA context to a EU context, on both the account of the individual consuming the trope and how the setting is applied by a creator. A few specific examples would have driven that point home. Just an example of an easy to overlook detail that can add more layers to your work on repeat watches. (I doubt I am the only one who watched this more than once, it's far too difficult to consume an analysis video in one sitting imo)
Don't mean to come across nit-picky or anything, just trying to provide respectful feedback. Tried to proof-read the best that I could but It's almost 430AM and I need to be in bed but had to pause your RDR video to make this comment before I forget lol.

I’m trying to get better at the visual part of these videos, but I’ll be the first to admit I’m not great at editing or really even wanting to polish the visuals. I do like the idea of adding just pictures or text that emphasizes points though, I’ll keep that in mind.

The YT Recommendation is actually good for some time
I recently recommended The Meaning and Culture of Grand Theft Auto: Critical Essays (essays on GTA3) to a university student I sometimes see online in a game I play. This in turn got me to thinking about wanting to see (or perhaps even write) some critical analysis on the two subsequent editions to the franchise. Since I'm old enough that my first impulse is to turn to physical books for reference, I'm afraid I'm a bit late to your analysis of both.
So far I've only watched your videos on GTA 4 and 5, but am sure to watching more. Most interesting so far!
I, too, found the satire and parody in IV to be the best in the series for mostly the same reasons you share. The biggest hurdle for 5 (and why it didn't work) was in combining the 3 lives of career criminals and framing them in a culture (an imaginal LA with Hollywood as its center) which itself arguably a parody of American culture. How do you parody a parody? Making it as loud as possible just didn't really work. I found Trevor's social criticisms to be the most interesting of the three characters (much to my surprise), but the game tosses him under the bus ultimately when he brutally murders Floyd and Debra and anything insightful he might have said is invalidated as he he is just a "psycho killer" after all.

he doesn't murder floyd, only debra, there's a news report which states floyd was shot and debra was stabbed
Trevor didn’t kill Floyd, it’s implied (and was revealed by the developers in an interview awhile ago) that Debra shoots Floyd because she’s jumpy and trigger happy, which enrages Trevor, and while she’s reeling from shock Trevor kills her with the knife Floyd was holding, Debra missed a shot too, hence the hole in the window.

this is just what ive been looking for since replaying the game recently, you do a great job of articulating exactly why its positives work and its negatives dont. i especially love you mentioning how strange it is that it doesnt always know when to be serious, like with michaels family being treated as a joke. thats something thats always bothered me, its like it wants you to care about his family but i just never have because the game treats them more like caricatures than actual people, when other parts of the story ARE taken seriously and i DO care. while i think this game can be genuinely really funny, the humor is a bit out of place in parts of the story that shouldve been more genuine (especially with some of the more low brow 'teenage boy' humor that feels incredibly dated imo).
still, i love gta5 despite its flaws and i think theyre worth talking about, and the game as a whole is worthy of an analysis just like this. its clear you put a lot of thought into this and it definitely shows! great video!

How I see this story, in my eyes at least, is that it's a tale of three anti-heroes, not villians or heroes, getting their own type of redemption after falling down from grace. The uneasy friendship of Michael, Trevor, and Franklin is what helps them come out top during "Deathwish", thanks to Franklin realizing that if he choose the other paths, he would end causing himself to fall into the same path Michael did at the begining of the game: A traitor. He basically allows Micheal and Trevor to have a new life, with Michael being able to have a successfully family and do his dream job and Trevor able to be the "legitimate" businessman. I also see C being the ending where the main characters can finally get out of the "set-up" from the main bad guys. The mission is literally called Deathwish for a reason, but thanks to the comradery between them, they perservere.
13:12 the fundamental problem with RDR 2 is that it lacks this, you get severely punished for interacting with the world in any way beyond "ThAt'S a NiCe HoRsE mIsTeR" and while it might be immersive and thematically on-point, its no fun at all
RDR2 was never made to be GTA in the Wild West though

I guess the best way to play gta 5 is never to take it seriously. It never takes itself seriously. In that lens, it making fun of everything is appropriate. I agree that gta 4 had the better narrative, no doubt. However, Gta 5 does have its charm in my opinion because it is a romp more than anything else.

Congratulations on completing the “Book of Rockstar Games.” I thoroughly enjoyed the entire series, with my favorite part being Grand Theft Auto4. Overall, the series was great and in-depth learning a lot. It would seem Rockstar really encapsulates four important parts of American history. RDR being the beginning of civilization and the end of the west, LA Noire being the end of WW2 and 1950’s prosperity in America, GTA 4 being the end of the Balkan Wars and the entering of an immigrant into America during the 2008 financial crisis then finally GTA V really captures the same financial and housing crisis in LA/Los Santos along with government corruption. The problem with GTA V seemed to be Rockstar making a large, Hollywood action series bombastic and grandiose game yet... due to that, the failed. In terms of a video game, GTA V nails it. A game you can just get on after work and school messing around to blow off some steam due to its immense amount of activity compared to its predecessor with news guns, planes/helicopters, vehicles etc. Yet, that’s where the story failed. The story was basically a re-hash of bank movies like The Italian Job and other mob movies. They Michael to be this wise soothsayer who already knows life yet he’s still confused about it. Trying to teach the son he never had, Franklin. I wish you delved more into the theme of mid-life crisis as it’s a prevalent theme among Michael and Trevor, as they’re polar opposites. GTA V has become the game where TH-camrs love messing around with mods and the like for gaining millions of views. The game lost its core and now its a silly game to mess around with. Which is why I think Rockstar went back to a more emotional and heartbreaking story in RDR2, similar to GTA 4. In conclusion, GTA V is the weakest of Rockstar games but it’s still a silly game to mess around with for an hour or two then turn off. Thoroughly enjoyed the series as a whole. I would recommend watching BrokerCast analysis of GTA 4 and he too, analyzed many of the Rockstar games as you but in a 2 hour video. So please watch when you have the time. Thank you for the series as I have learned a lot and looked at these games along with video games as a whole with a different in-depth philosophical perspective.

Don't compare red dead to gta, red dead redemption, as it explains in the title, is the "outlaw with a heart of gold" story, so it made sense for r* to chose a more serious story for red dead

To answer your question, no I don't often change my in-game behavior depending on which protagonist I play as.
I believe I am a special case though, as I often play as different peds than the main protagonists. Gangsters, police, or others.
This detaches me from the story, thus making me improvise in regards to roleplay. As Trevor, I use his airport as a personal hanger and fly from Sandy Shores to Los Santos and back.
