They could have made it so much better, if they actually tried to be an actual stealth game franchise they could compete with Splinter Cell, Hitman or Mgs. But with what the first two games presented to us (parkour gameplay with some janky mission objectives) and the other games in the series were just a downgrade from what was already not so good and clear to the gaming community in general...
I always say this, such a good concept, but if they made it more linear like hitman and splinter cell from the very beggining, this franchise would be so damn good...
No idea why ubisoft simply did not make another splinter cell like game, which assassins creed could definitely be, and just build upon that...

But they couldnt do it; and so the franchise drifted further and further away from what it was meant to be...and now; the AC games could just as well be:

    Mystery Man: Origins
    Hellenic Person: Exploration
Vikings: The Netflix Adaptation Game and so on

The collectibles are actually there to make fun of completionists. Also you can just climb down behind william de monferat. The parkour is so satisfying to learn. It offers you complete freedom, meaning you can jump to your death if you want. It is permitted. As for combat, i always use the shock and awe system with the hiddenblade. It's the most satisfying thing ever.

    • @godzillazfriction

that mechanic is essentially the prototype of the chain killing mechanic that was introduced in Brotherhood... this is my personal opinion but i feel like AC2 tried to do too many things with its combat that it kinda falls flat compared to AC1s combat, there are some fun aspects that you can utilise like experimenting with the disarms or grabbing an enemy as soon as another enemy is about to hit you so that enemy can hit the person you grabbed is very neat but aside of that, AC1 had a lot going for despite it being the 1st AC game

    • @nezex0_0

yep, I'm a completionist. I was collecting flags in AC 1 as I watched this video. Idc if theres a reward to it (although it's nice), I still want to do it. 500 flags is rediculus, but I'm still gonna do it. If I like a game a lot I'm gonna do it.
Edit: NEVER MIND. A person on Reddit did tests to see if there is actullay a flag glitch or not. AND there is, and if it happens to you, you have to restart the game and avoid the glitch while collecting flags. I'm not gonna do that, I already have SO MANY flags, It pais me not to complete this game as I was so set on it, but I'm not gonna restart just to collect the 500 flags with the chance of the glitch still happening. It's related to deaths and save points, basically a no death run when collecting flags. I'm not doing that.

35:13 the main loop can look completely differently if you play it like it was designed originally: hudless.
view points may give you a brief look at a part of the city and are often positioned so you can see surrounding things of interest, but you have to go out and find the investigations among the crawling streets, listen for the propaganda screamers, look out for people talking to each other, or white veiled lads at the edges of public places, on roofs, or in secluded side alleys.
the first 10 minutes of this review opened my eyes to a completely new, deeply immersive way to play the game:
    th-cam.com/video/qY773hNptRg/w-d-xo.html
while yes, in essence, it's the same few tasks spread out among three cities, between the thick as tar atmosphere and the responsive and expressive mechanics that allow for a significant number of approaches in pretty much every situation, I always felt like the repetitiveness people complain about in this game is largely self induced. sure, if you go to icon, climb tower, go to next icon, go to next icon, shank the guy marked with icon as soon as you're not being watched, then go back to icon, it's likely boring as fuck if you don't make an effort to pull off some flashy stuff. but if there is no icon, you just find an ally in the streets who asks you for help with the people who are after him and tells you they are searching the marketplace for him. you either assume the high ground or walk among the crowds, use eagle vision to identify your targets, then, making sure no guard is around to witness it or your escape since there is no "you're being watched" icon, make your move and find your way back to the informant.
just like you don't need a viewpoint for anything: come to a new city, go to the bureau and listen to the rafiq. go to the places he describes and keep your eyes open on the way. you can organically stumble upon every single investigation, and if you don't, no worries, that's exactly why you only need 3 investigations to start most assassinations, if you can't find more it's okay, you just have less information to act on.
I'd wholeheartedly recommend anyone who likes ac1 to give it a hudless playthrough and if at all possible, only synchronise 1-2 viewpoints around the target's location to help you plan your approach using the intel you gained. it's special.
removing detection and health hud also removes a lot of intrusive sounds like the infuriating beeping when you just want to leave the damn kingdom behind you.

ive been avoiding minimaps ever since gta4 introduced the GPS so i was lucky to think of trying the same for this game. hudless (or at least turning off everything save for the weapon wheel) vastly improves this experience. the repetition of the core loop that you do 9 times over is part of what allowed this first game to be such a unique experience in the first place: you get to actually develop a groove by the end of the game. if the missions were as varied as those in the games that followed, it wouldnt have really been feasible to be able to go off and progress in the game on little more than the spoken directions you get in the bureau and the diegetic texts and maps you collect throughout the investigation missions. there’d be nothing to really practice at and so no real payoff for putting effort and attention into seeing if you can deepen the experience for yourself.
all told, this is the only game in the series i have any interest in ever replaying… once my familiarity with navigating these cities has faded from memory, of course.
ps: idk where my comments went but for anyone looking for the missing video should look here: stanislavcostiuc.com/2016/03/02/hud-less-design-of-assassins-creed-1/

Aiden doesn't really regret any of his actions though, he barely develops as a person at the end and it was optional. Don't get me wrong I like Aiden; but he is no Altair who practically had a whole mindset change, getting his perceptions turned upside down, and questioning everything he took for granted for the rest of his life.
Aiden's charm and intrigue came from how self-righteous and self absorbed he is, his actions are without a doubt evil and he knew that. While Altair also recognized his own and the brotherhood's hypocrisy, he is not proud of it and is constantly contemplating about his purpose and the Assassin's place in the world.

Aiden on the other hand was already a ruthless criminal who has a strange moral compass which ultimately still is kinda conflicted with killing but not in the same way as shay but both have very very similar ends as both are succumbed by their darkness inside them compared to Altair who started off as an evil sociopath to a flawed but wise and righteous person who wants to do what's right, Ezio also has similar ends to Aiden and shay since everything that happened to him in AC2, or most importantly Brotherhood, he became more ruthless and was succumbed by the darkness inside him in Revelations but ultimately he overcame it like Altair did.

This game is still my favorite in the series. Is it repetitive? Yes. Are the mechanics unrefined? Sure. Yet, this game is still more of a fully realized artistic vision than the rest of the series.
This game is focused in all aspects, designed in every way to facilitate its vision. This isn't a power fantasy, action/adventure revenge story like AC2, Brotherhood, AC3, Rogue, and Unity. This isn't a swashbuckling, light toned adventure like AC4. And it sure as hell isn't an ill-defined pseudo RPG worshiping the success of the Witcher 3 like all the modern AC games are.
The first game is a grim, philosophical journey of an arrogant and ignorant but highly skilled assassin learning the truth about the nature of existence and mankind. The gameplay is sharp and focused, with Altair's missions being tailored to his skillset. He gathers information and sets up what he needs to to successfully assassinate his target.
But the story and characters subvert this by having every target confide in Altair facts and beliefs that make him question his own beliefs and the use of his skills in Al-Maulim's pursuit.
He starts looking at the whole picture and contemplating everything he had been taught in the Brotherhood (side note, I love that both the Assassins and Templars are called a Brotherhood in this one, demonstrating their similarities that Altair and us see revealed throughout the game). Finally, the story's climax has Robert and Richard Lioneart providing some profound and not entirely objectionable ideas about everything. Robert Desable is still my favorite Templar in the series for this. Robert's closing lines strike a chord, where he says "at least we were willing to share this power and achieve our goals. The same cannot be said of Al-Maulim" (to paraphrase). And then Richard talks of people NEEDING to look to men such as himself because of our uncurable human nature, "kicking and screaming from birth to death."
Then Altair finds out that the master he looked up to the very same as Richard described, was just an arrogant, power hungry tyrant with no higher goal than to control the holy land for himself. He didn't even seek to improve it and its people's lives like the Templars thought they were doing. He is worse than any enemy Altair was quick to assassinate.
This ends with Altair finally completing his arc and defeating his master and father figure. Taking the Piece of Eden that was so sought in the Templar's and Al-Maulim's plans. Now he has the choice, with everything he has learned, of how to change the Holy Land or to not change it at all.
"Nothing is true, everything is permitted."
This game had such a complete, unique vision that I can't believe it gets devalued by fans so much. It is so clearly the most inspired game of the series in every way, and it's tragic that this inspiration was lost along the way (arguably starting from this game's immediate sequel).

They could do a remaster of this game and make bank, but I also feel this game is aged enough to need an update/remake. I think if Ubisoft could do something clever with the story it would be cool, but even if they just reworked the gameplay mechanics the story would still work.

@@unc54 Totally agree. Ubisoft (as a company) no longer show to understand games. Remaking AC1 they would do a just a quick cash grab on the new people that never knew the older games and fuck our dedicated community. There’s an infinite list of things that I could mention and they would fuck up half of it to put the game to “today’s standards”. I just want an optimised version to newer generations that works well because this game is already amazing, it doesn’t need many changes. It needs, but not the ones Ubisoft would do.

Great Video, this game is so underrated.
Just to clarify: You don't talk to a god, you talk to a projection of a highly advanced race pre-cataclysm. Their tech seems god like because its beyond our comprehension like how Mythology is taken literally by some people (may be some truth in it but regardless). people confuse this all the time, that's why the RPG games literally make u a god who fights gods, its quite ridiculous.
We can grow animals in labs, we have VR, we can make holograms. our tech in 2020+ isn't that far removed yet people cannot fathom it so they say "its the gods".

    Small nitpick.
What you see on screen is not what happened to Altair, what you see is what Altair _remembers,_ it's a very biased perspective in lore.
This is why cities aren't as big as they were in real life, the Assassin simply doesn't remember every detail. Why every alley looks like a playground to climb on, because to an assassin, they are.
It's also why for instance, Ezio falls into Christina memories in ACB. He sees a woman that looks like her and it's causing him to remember. Ezio is still in Rome when those events are taking place, he's just remembering a time in Florence so strongly that the animus can't separate the two and it suddenly transports Desmond reliving Ezio's memory to Florence.
This small bit of lore is later expanded upon in AC4 where a terminal explains why Abstergo can't find assassin hideouts by putting captured assassins in the animus. The answer is, people zone out while travelling. You can follow the directions exactly as someone remembered them, but their memory will be wrong and zoned out. Shortening distances and putting turns where there are none. This is also the game that gives us the most absolute wonky looking map in the series if you ignore The Frontier, and that's Edward sailing the Caribbean. Edward is clearly zoned out while sailing. He remembers the weather happening randomly, the occasional ship encounters, the general vibe of the sea and its waves, and he remembers _roughly_ the location of where some islands were. But does he remember every inch of water between each island? Does he remember the exact coastlines of Cuba and such? Not at all, he's zoned out. Not unaware of his surroundings, but simply not recording enough information for the Animus to make an accurate simulation of.
It is a _biased_ simulation. Not a factual one.
And this is something Ubisoft developers have really forgotten in later entries with things like Egypt and Greece being simulated by the animus itself and not from the memories of the DNA samples.

I love that the first game requires you to go to the bureaus, then use the viewpoints to discover hints about your target, and rescue citizens to either stop pursuers or a group of scholars to hide with. After this, it was simply “this is your target list, we’ll work our way along and take them out as they appear in the story.” Like in AC 2, when Ezio kills his rival in Tuscany, he’s just there on the tower. You didn’t actually need to figure out that he would be there, at that time of day with all those guards there. AC 1 allows you to either, get every hint possible to know everything about your target, how to get in and out, etc, or you can get the bare minimum of hints and try to go in with just your wits. But every time, the minimum you must have is where your target will be, you need to find that out yourself through the different hint objectives like eavesdrop

The tones, atmosphere, historic context, philosophical debates, conversations with Vidic and Al Mualim and the moral relativity on display in this game is truly something exceptional in gaming. None of the subsequent games were able to accomplish something that intriguing for me. Hopefully Mirage can offer some similarity to AC 1 in terms of gameplay, atmosphere and setting, but I don't think Ubisoft is ever going to come back to this mentally intensive content ever again.

i don’t think i’ve ever seen anyone bring this up about AC1 before, so i’d like to bring it up here. this game is heavily a direct lover letter to Metal Gear Solid 2, almost to the point of ripping it off from its narrative structure to its themes about genetics and free will, character interactions etc. even into the meta-gameplay stuff about the animus *being* a console. it isn’t random that MGS4 and AC did some cross promotion and easter eggs with each other, just artists who understand each other showing love.
your dissection is flawless and your work is appreciated ^^ the point about the camera for the cutscenes tying into Nothing is True and Everything is Permitted is gorgeous. id just like to add that the idea of the game saying “fuck a cinematic” is kind of an at the time post-modern and innovative idea, since only games can provide this kind of “non-cinematography”

Love the video! I agree with most things and that this game his heavily overlooked, it is definitely in my top 3 AC games. But I love the parkour system in this game, so much player agency, control and freedom. You can side/back eject, grab ledges while falling (there's even a vault mechanic in this game}. When you scale walls and buildings you actually have to use your brain unlike AC Unity onwards where you would just press climb and the character does it for you with no effort or feeling of reward. Parkour is one of the core gameplay elements in AC and its a shame it has devolved so much. I find it hilarious in Odyssey/Valhalla how you can take no fall damage if you unlock it. Where's the consequences of your actions as a player, there's no engagement or feeling of satisfaction! The pinnacle of AC parkour is definitely AC1-ACRevelations in my opinion.

AC 3 started the hold one button system. Unity has the most stylish parkour but the Original games are still the best, most autonomy and options. AC1-ACR is the Golden Age of AC. I still love AC 3, 4 and Unity but the OGs cannot be beaten.

From the monologue, it seems like the book burner target would fit more as a rogue assassin stimulating the conflict to further their own influence, they talk so much of how the books are false and how individuals need to find their own truth without them, so it fits with the assassin maxim. Not only that but it could further the complexity of morality with the assassin's and introduce the idea that not all assassin's are good and that their ideology can be harmful to the innocent without being broken fully

After coming back to the game now I do say I appreciate it a lot more, my main gripe is the missions on this game, it's very tedious once you do the first 3 missions to get your rank back then another 3 after that, it's a little bit of a drag ngtl. But damn I had no idea how much I'd start to love this game series as I got older, I was about 7 or 8 when I first played this, I only remember playing it for the amazing open-world nothing more, but replaying it now it makes me love the series even more now, seeing how far it has come. ("seeing how far it has come" not including the past three new games though I can't seem to like em even if I tried)
