For around eight years, part of me has felt that Grand Theft Auto V is overrated. I always remembered the game as having an incredibly crafted but formulaic open world, a passable but forgettable story, enjoyable but not revolutionary gameplay, and good but not entirely memorable characters. With the recent re-release of the game, I decided to put my memory to the test. I want to talk about why I was wrong about Grand Theft Auto V.

If idiot/spoilt and advantage taking of their parents CHILDREN continue to pump online/rockstar with millions and millions of dollars then ofcourse like any company rockstar are going to continue to milk them all dry. As much as I detest the greed and direction rockstar have gone (most notably the fact they completely axed story mode expansion packs like they did for 4 gta 4 is particularly such a shame) you cannot blame them (as any company would) for wanting to keep taking money from the customer if that customer is willing to continue to fill their bank accounts up for minimal effort. It's a no brainer unfortunately. And I guess the way they saw it, "instead of us working our asses off creating a compelling and critically acclaimed expansion to the story that will give us a nice profit, we might as well put little effort into giving them online content that gives us huge profits for very little work on our part and whilst we are at it let's charge them stupid rates because after all they continue to be willing to pay stupid amounts for our "amazing" flying cars and bikes"
As shameful as it is, rockstar have preferred to take those huge profits over decent profits and no longer (specifically referring to gta 5 as the likes of RDR2 are still utter masterpieces when they can be bothered) take pride in pumping out respectful and admired works of art and would rather release sub standard "content" for online simply because it continues even after 8 years to be massively profitable for them. And like I've said, if the foolish children are willing to continue to pay these prices then rockstar are going to continue to oblige them

Trevor doesn’t see evil, his blinded by his own morality. He sees how the world is with a dismissive eye.
Franklin doesn’t speak on evil, his tongue is tied by his greed for money that we never know what Franklin is truly thinking besides chasing a dollar. The world doesn’t care what Franklin has to say, so why should he explain himself ?
Michael doesn’t hear evil, his ears are filled with cheesy movie dialogue. Just like Trevor being blinded, Michael is deaf to the reality of the world nd hears what he wants to hear.
What happens in North Yankton makes this solid, Trevor couldn’t SEE a life other than the crime they committed. Michael didn’t want to HEAR about any more crimes to do when he had a family.

As much as I'll always love SA, it's honestly my least favorite out of all the 3D titles (I feel that the vastly underrated VCS was the best of the 3D era and even still has the best soundtrack). I honestly find CJ to be a bit too whiny most of the time and I can't seriously buy him pulling off half of the shit he does in the story after leaving LS, especially once he starts working for Toreno and makes it to LV. Overall it just felt the most cartoon-ish of any GTA. Whenever someone claims that the story in SA was " better written and more believable than V's", I immediately know to disregard anything they say. And on top of that, the three cities feel way too small and condensed for my tastes, especially after experiencing the much larger, more accurate, lifelike cities in IV and V. Hell, even VC feels bigger than any of the cities in SA.

It's kind of unfair to say GTA V was bad because it lacked the seriousness seen in IV because GTA V wasn't trying to be as gritty as IV was. It's also unfair to criticize the atmosphere of GTA IV for being super dull and grey compared to V because GTA IV was trying to capture that dark atmosphere of New York City. Rather than comparing the games and saying 'this game did this badly compared to this' we should be letting the games stand for themselves and criticizing them based on how well they achieved what their vision for the game was.

I think the problem with GTA V is its story telling/setup. The prologue sets up an amazing idea...then for a few hours does nothing with it. We set up Trevor and Micahel's story, then for a few hours it's just Franklin stealing cars. I know why they did it, but it feels like all that setup was in the wrong place.
Another is the ending. The idea in theory is who does Franklin learn from more? The problem is that choosing both has no downside, thus making it feel pointless. IMO, if Frankin died with deathwish it would have been more interesting. Now it's saying you can't have it perfect with both loyalty and survival.
Idk, that's just what I think.

I think Franklin's arc was about taking control over his life and making his own decisions, being his boss and being the one calling the shots, like he talks about with Simeon: "it seems like all I do is let people tell me what to do and I do it and nothing changes." At the end of the game he's given three choices: do what Steve Haines told him to do and kill Trevor; do what Devin Weston told him to do and kill Michael, or he can take control and call the shots himself which is what he does in option C.

If I had never played Read Dead Redemption 2, I would probably agree with you, and most likely GTA 5 would be my favorite game. But rdr2 just takes every mechanic in that game and takes it to the next level. I can play rdr2 for a whole day, never even touch a main story mission, and still have an absolute blast at it. Wether it's hunting for animals or treasure, bounty hunting, exploring the world and its secrets, or find random strangers in the wilderness with random encounters was an experience that I've only felt with Breath of the Wild.
I would probably like GTA 5 almost if not as much as rdr2, but there's two mechanics that these two games share, and arguably are the main mechanics that make them what they are - that is shooting and driving. And in those two categories, rdr2 still blows GTA 5 out of the water.
The most obvious mechanic being driving, having a horse with you in the world of rdr2 is an extension of the player, the horse not only helps you traveling, it stores extra weapons and materials. You even have to take care of your horse's basic needs, and as you spend time and energy with it, your bonding increases, rewarding the player with a stronger and more efficient horse. On the other hand, your car in GTA 5 is expendable and serves no other purpose other than mobility. I can no longer enjoy cars in GTA 5 after rdr2. It's funny because there's an old game from the early 2000s called "True Crime" similar to GTA that actually uses the player's car as a way to access to extra items and weapons. I always thought that was a great idea, and seeing it in rdr2 blew my mind.
Then there's the main mechanic: shooting. Shooting in GTA 5 feels bland, even when you compare it to GTA 4 released in 2007. You can even compare it to Max Payne 3 released a year before GTA 5 and it simply doesn't hold up. Now in rdr2 the shooting is awesome, the bullet impact on enemies and the wounds they leave on them; you can shoot an enemy in the neck and they have animations of them trying to stop the bleeding with their hands before passing out and dying, same for the stomach, etc... The technology is simply superior. And seeing how Max Payne 3 still holds up to this day with their shooting mechanics, I just can't give GTA 5 a break on this subject either.
I won't even touch the story because this comment would get too long. But I hope you get my point.

I mean yeah, this is a Rockstar singleplayer game we're talking about, of course each entry is gonna be better like the evolution fron gta 3 to San Andreas but that being said though I have to disagree about the shooting feeling bland, you also see bullet wounds on enemies in 5 and enemies do (pretty rarely) stand for a few seconds before falling over like in Max Payne 3. Another thing gta 5's shooting has the upper hand in is that feels less clunky; I don't have to wait a billion years for Arthur or John to enter cover and I can actually blind fire but shootouts feel more cinematic in rdr2 due excellent score, kill cams and landing a clean headshot followed by the screen effect never fails to be satisfying.
All in all I like gta 5 because it's "more straight to the point" compared to Red Dead 2 because I don't have cores to worry about, I don't have to clean my gun every once in a while, I can carry as many weapons as I want, I don't have to worry about camp members complainng that I'm not contributing money to the camp and I especially don't have to worry about a $5000 bounty being on my head because I pressed the antagonize button on an npc and was "disturbing the peace" as a result. Gta 5 has a better pick up and play feeling because there aren't a billion mechanics I have to remember. On the other hand I like Red Dead 2 because the billion mechanics the game does introduce can really make the game immersive like eating, looking after your horse etc, hunting is great and world interaction is top notch.
They're both great games because one is straight to the point and another one takes it's time to get you immersed in it's world.
At least that's how I see it anyway.

It does sound rly interesting, but it was wayy too draggy. The game srsly did not need 90 missions. The whole game was basically just Niko asking multiple different people for help. Missions were boring as well. It's just "drive to this and kill these people." And there are bout 5 tailing missions, which is easily the most boring type of mission in any gta games.

I get where all the praise is coming from, and back when GTA 4 was released, it was so groundbreaking in terms of technology and it truly showed what Xbox 360 and PS3 were capable of; but honestly, GTA 4's story and setting never really stuck with me, and i've never completed it, because to me it felt like the game was trying too hard to be serious in a series that is known for being a sort of satirical reflection of real world. Stretch represents the worst version of Franklin. A man who manipulates others in a cyclical pyramid scheme that leaves an evergrowing trail of bodies and betrayed friends.
Devin Weston is the worst of Michael. A man who thinks money can buy everything and is actively shown to be a hypocrite that cares for no one truly except himself.
Steve Haines is an interesting type because he is the enforcer of a system that Trevor hates. A major operative of the FIB who uses severe retribution when betrayed, but also is the most casually cruel antagonist out of all of them.

Thank you for defending GTAV. Public opinion has really turned on it lately, maybe since the Perico update where speculation of a coming GTA6 took off. I know it's easy to connect the dots to blame GTAO for a lack of new GTA but they are developing it, plus we got the amazing RDR2!
I'm not too happy how they've crafted the atmosphere of GTAO in the PS4 era with the flying bike and encouraging sabotage of other player's hard work on businesses, but aside from that everything continually added is appreciated and it doesn't take away from it being a splendid, innovative game at the time. Just seems we've been subjected to nearly 10 years of it and we;ve become complacent. I guess 8 years is about the max saturation point where they should really move on.
But you know, people don't have to play it, and don't have to get mad about it :P And people that do enjoy playing it maybe didn't play it in 2013 and should be allowed to enjoy a thing. Anything else retro we'd LOVE to see new people enjoying. So in my mind that became a place that I avoided at all costs, but about 2 weeks ago I was on my 6th rdr2 playthrough and Ive always liked that contrast between past and future (big AC fan) so I tend to play like that, I just wanted a modern day life story about bank robbers which I love how those 2 games concepts fit into each other. After playing houndreds of hours being an outlaw then for you to seek some sort of redemption in the epilogue only to make history repeat itself right on the North Yankton robbery, it felt so different rather than coming to rdr2 after gtav, I thought gta5s intro was with frank and lamar at the beach but I forgot about the first robbery in 2004, I forgot about so many things that I couldnr help but wonder, why havent I played more of the story? Finally someone tackling this issue, Rockstar going downhill doesn't mean GTA V was bad

  • @CeliriaRose
    @CeliriaRose ปีที่แล้ว +18

My main issue with GTA V is despite being built around three protagonists the story is really only set around one. It's Michael's story at heart. The story of this former bank robber who tried to get out but got dragged back in. The majority of the storyline could very easily have been adapted to have Michael as the only main character and it honestly wouldn't have lost much in terms of the actual plot. Trevor and Franklin just don't really have their own storylines. For the most part they are just tied into Michael's with Franklin as the sidekick and Trevor as the former friend/accomplice and outside of a little for context for each characters introduction there's very little main plot that feels specifically focused on them as characters.
With Franklin there could have been more involving Lamar and Stetch. More involvement on the idea of this street kid trying to break away and hit the big time but maybe still having his old life keep coming back to haunt him or trying to drag him back. This would have made the scene with Tanisha and the ending taking down Stretch more meaningful because otherwise you've barely dealt with those things for the majority of the game. When they do pop up it's almost more of a feeling of "Oh right those characters and plotline exist don't they" rather than being any kind of meaningful or satisfying moment.
Trevor could have been taken from the angle of a conflict of lives. He's moved on after Michael, believing his friend and partner in crime dead he's gone on to make new allies and start a whole new business but then he gets pulled away by this ghost from his past. There could have been more interplay between him needing to go back and forth between Los Santos and Blaine County trying to balance keeping up with that current life and trying to deal with his past one.
And all of this would have worked well thematically because it puts all three characters in a similar theme. They are all are at a crossroad in their lives which culminates around this heist movie style core but aside from that they are all trying to sort out which way they want their lives to go. This could even have culminated in a really cool set of choices in the end where instead of the A, B, C choice (which in my opinion was a really terrible final choice) they could have instead had each character make a final choice regarding their own life. Does Michael try to go back to trying to be retired or does he accept his criminal nature and what impact does that play on his family. Does Franklin turn end up going the for the high life as a bank robber living in a big mansion turning his back on his past or does he take his new found skills and bring them back to the friends and issues he has been leaving behind. Does Trevor choose his old life working with Michael or his new one with Ron and Wade. And then these choices would then impact the ending and how the characters handle things. This would have been far more engaging in my opinion for an ending than do you want Trevor to die, Michael to die, or everyone lives.

What GTA 4 lacked in gameplay variety or graphical polish, it made up for by giving you tons of shit to interact with. Even just the existence of the dating and friends systems kinda hints that there's a larger world that exists without you, that people live in liberty city and sometimes want to hang out with you, the player.
LA is such a vibrant and buzzing city, it's a shame they didnt include fun mundanities like restaurants or comedy shows or music events or whatever. All the gameplay has this manic need to be CrAzY and bombastic all the time; R* kind of shot themselves in the foot by making such a beautifully detailed world that you just...cant really interact with.

I love GTAV, finnished story about 3 times I think. The world is great too, but there is something that makes it just a background and not something that I blend in like in RDR2. Nothing that makes me stay in a bar and gamble or interact with NPC too much. If there is some side mission or a random event I'll do it, but just no desire to explore the world. Story is pretty solid, what I liked the most about this game is that it makes you feel like you're in a solid action movie and the pace is quite high.

I enjoyed the story, but the main reason why i geniunely prefer this game over GTA IV is the overall gameplay and varied mission design.Controls are way more smoother and gameplay is a lot easier to get used to,i'm not a huge fan of these exaggrated ragdoll physics thing unlike most others. And missions reminds me of a lot of good ol fashion over the top action from GTA San Andreas.I absolutely adored missions like Paleto Score,Minor Turbunce,Bury The Hatchet,The Wrap Up,Three's Company,Blitz Play,I Fought The Law etc.And the fact that all of em have their own unique scores is really impressive.
Also even though i'm a big supporter of density over size i loved the map,it's not only big but also life-like and detailed. They really did an amazing job at creating some of LA's most famous landmarks.I think i prefer larger maps in GTA-like games. They suit type of these games better.Overall even after almost a decade it's still a solid 9/10 game in my opinion.Just can't understand the hate.

This was my third playthrough of the game since its original release (I played it on Xbox 360 in 2013 and then again on PS4 in 2016). I too had forgotten just how incredible this game really is and I'm so glad I took the time to revisit it. None of what made the games before 5 good was about online. They can add all they want to the world, but it can never really be the same way it is in single player. The problem, I feel with GTA 5, is that the supporting cast's characters aren't given the enough importance. If you are comparing the supporting characters in Lester to the likes of Roman, Dutch, you see that they really don't have much going for them other than being a part in the GTA 5 story. I hope GTA 6 improves upon this and gives additional importance to the supporting cast. Then, we might have a game that's as memorable as RDR 2.

The easiest way to make cash in the early game play is to invest in the stockmarket. Certainly ironic considering all the capitalist bashing in the games dialog.

Gta Online is kinda good but the core game is pretty bad, you purely grind money to buy stuff that makes you more money to do nothing with at the end lmao. Yes of course there are cool or dumb/funny vehicles and weapons but still... It is very much based on Rockstar wanting people to trade their real money for GTA money (SharkCards).

It was far from perfect, BUT at that time, people just wanted something sunny ,something open and sharp looking, after GTA 4 and red dead and all the other gritty ps3 games. I personally believe GTA 5 was a victim of it's own success, you analyze a product long enough you'll find flaws in it. And yes GTA 4 is still better, but I can guarantee you back in 2014 no one would have said that.

It was all unheard of at the time and like GTASA before it, showcased the pinnacle of use of that console generation.

    I’ve played Gta 5 since I was 11. Now I’m 17, turning 18 next year.
I remember playing it on the PS3, mind blown about everything you can do in the game.
But through the years, Gta 5 started to get..kind of boring. The only reason I play it is because of online mode, which thankfully has private servers to not get your stuff taken, but other than that it’s the only reason it’s still alive at this point. But I still love exploring the map and enjoy the places, especially with my new car.
RDR2 was the game that made me look at life differently. Especially into a perspective of how it is in the end on the Wild West era.
The incredible amount of details they put in and the unforgettable story made me come back. I’ve been playing it every since it came out on Xbox One, so about 6 years.
It took me a whole year to complete the game, because I wanted to melt into the experience and atmosphere when playing as Arthur.
Something just changed in me when he breathed his last breath, and I didn’t even believe it as I processed his death as John. 2 weeks later after literally mourning his death i continued as John and completed the game fully.

Glad to see more people appreciate this story. I made a point to replay it every time the game was rereleased. When sitting next to the masterpiece that is rdr2 it’s easy to forget how fun the gtav story is.

You didn't even mention Brad... All the subtle dialogue hints throughout the story that lead the player to realize that Brad is not in prison, but in the grave- that whole storyline twist kinda blew my mind in my first playthrough.
Also, thanks to the Mission Checkpoints, this was the first GTA game I was able to beat.

Then only to find out, post story, that if Franklin and Trevor hang out, Trevor tells him he never really cared about Brad. It was the betrayal and the trust he'd had with Michael that was important to him.

What saves GTA V is the phenomenal voice acting, the main plot (but not much of the actual story), the return of some variety to the missions and the ability to customize vehicles and actually have a garage to store them in.
The weak primary antagonists, the lack of flow in the story and missions and the overall shallow feel of Los Santos all hurt the overall product and this may just be my opinion but I prefer the heavier realistic driving of GTA IV over the light arcade feeling cars of V.

I need to replay the story. Bcuz tbh I barely remember most of it and I’ve done it twice. Michael is probably my most empathetic. Franklin is my most likable, but I feel like the gang aspect was barely there. Trevor is fun, but I never expected any sort of redemption from him. I beat the game when I “upgraded” to the PS4 version and ultimately chose the ending where everyone lives. I think GTA V was ground breaking when it came out in 2013. But it’s been so ever present we _forget_ it’s that old, and it’s been milked so thoroughly, it feels like old hat.

For me it was the opposite. I looked forwarded to it with such extreme hype and then when it came out in 2013 I was so disappointed, because it didn’t live up to my expectations at all. Everything I thought they were going to improve upon from the last game was instead canned and stripped down. It wasn’t until years later that I came to appreciate it

Happiness is reality without expectations. It's why I don't get "hyped" about anything other than chocolate lava cakes from dominos. Also the reason why I've put 100s of hours into fallout, skyrim, gta and other games that people claim are "unplayable."

I’ve always said that ppl gotta love the games for the developers vision for the game is. Not for what THEY want it to be
Those ppl have such an unrealistic world view of things it’s no wonder they get disappointed the way they do
      They’re not grounded in reality
This is the fate cyberpunk suffered lol

@@versatilelord8893I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect the features that made IV so fun to play to at least be carried over to the next game, if not improved upon, as opposed to being completely removed

@@BDozer666 it wasn't a big downgrade at all really. the dialogue and acting is much better in GTA V, missions are more varied, the game has an original score for each mission which GTA IV doesn't have one at all and GTA V makes so many quality of life changes like the weapon wheel and radio wheel and an actual checkpoint system. The game's shooting mechanics and cover system feel much more refined and less clunky and although the driving is personal preference I think it feels much better. GTA V I felt did as much as it could with the hardware available to push what GTA IV did technically further and to make the experience as enjoyable as possible.

I think one of the reasons V wasn't that innovative or industry changing is because they'd already changed the industry totally with 3. I think 3 is one of the most important games ever. And since then rockstar have just been improving on that, technically and thematically.

Ain't it the first GTA to do ambient music for missions and being wanted and whatnot? Like, Bully and Red Dead Redemption did it first in terms of their open world stuff, but it definitely gives V a unique atmosphere. I still have the music that plays when you hover over the PS3 version's icon popping into my head occasionally.

GTAV feels like Fallout 4 in a way that IV feels like New Vegas. I play F4 for it's modernity and modability and have way more hours in it than FNV,but NV iy so much more memorable and fun in a way that 4 isn't and will never be, even if I mod it to feel like the old one
