    You know you have a special bond with your vehicle when you praise it for still working after taking on the highway.

      +boofighter Yeah, that special bond that's forged during the hours spent waiting for the breakdown truck.

    I managed to get ~18 mpg mpg on a 134-mile trip from Los Angeles to Palm Desert in a 2005 model with the 4-speed auto. They're not fun or practical vehicles for highway trips. It's too loud and not comfortable for long trips, and they don't handle crosswind with much grace. I haven't driven the current generation yet, but I can't imagine it's a huge leap forward in any of those areas. It's an awesome car as long as it's your weekend adventure car instead of daily driver.

    Just wanted to say I LOVE these shows Tommy! I've got a 95 yj with a VW 1.9 TDI boosted to 160 hp and 280 tq and it gets about 28-33 depending how you drive it with the soft top, but I also have an 87 wrangler with the 2.5 4 cylinder (both jeeps have 33s and a lift) and it has 120k on it and I only average 13.9.... ...ONE BETTER!!!!! And both are 5 speeds!

    I think 13mpg is great for something designed for off road use plus 21 years old plus 150k miles. With the 3 speed your probably around 3000-3500rpm going 70mph.

      +Steve Holt i averaged 22mpg in my 1988 Toyota Pickup during my 3,000 mile trip from Seattle to Atlanta. i didn't have 5th gear and had a fuel leak but still managed to get as high as 26mpg and as low as 6mpg in the mountains. lol
      4th gear, 80-90mph, 32in tires, heavy 1/4in steel bumper, and a bed loaded with luggage/fluids/tools.

    Not to bad for an old jeep! I've had YJ, TJ, and now a JK! It's unbelievable how far the gas mileage has come!! I drive about 68 miles a day round trip to work and back, in the mountains of West Virginia and get anywhere 20-28 depending how hard I'm running!! But great videos on the Jeep👍

    I get a lot better mileage with my 2003 Jeep TJ but then again I keep it to 62 (100 km/h). It would be interesting to repeat your test at 60 and see the difference it makes. I'd bet a 25% improvement.

  • @bizkillall

    Even for a 21 year old off-road vehicle, that gas mileage is still pretty bad. I towed a 4800lb trailer with 500lbs in the bed a distance of 1,072 miles with my 1999 Tacoma V6 TRD Off-road 5MT when it had 260,000 miles and got almost the same gas mileage as this Jeep. 12.1 mpg average for the entire trip. Empty, my Tacoma averaged 17mpg during that same distance (but going the other direction).
    I think the 3 speed hurts the Jeep the most. Would be interesting to see a comparison with a similar Jeep with the 5MT. That should be closer to my Tacoma in fuel efficiency.

  • @axia24
    @axia24 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question: Was the speedometer gearing changed to account for the taller tires? If not, was GPS used for speed? Otherwise you were probably closer to 80 than 70 and the MPGs went down as a result! A brick with fat tires has a ton of friction (from cd and rolling resistance) at 80!

  • @OverlandTT
    @OverlandTT 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Should use a how speed check to compare.
    I know my 3.0 CRD 2005 WK going up to 31inch has hit highway mpg especially.
    Had it as high as 38.5 and now I struggle with getting as much as 31.
    But I'm aware that over stock my tyres are around 6.5% a tail speed difference so I add that in too. City driving is at a mid 20s typically if driven steady.

  • @jonathanb1987
    @jonathanb1987 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    12.8 MPG isn't that bad considering you have 33" tires, a three-speed automatic, and driving it at 70 MPH. I have a bone stock 05 Rubicon with the Six-speed Manual and I get about 15-16 MPG when I drive 70 MPH in North Dakota. My old 04 stock Wrangler X with 31" tires and a four-speed automatic averaged around 12 MPG while going 70 MPG.

    My '99 XJ gets around 20 on the highway, but that plummets to 14 around town. Stock tires, no lift, 218,000 on the odometer. I am always tempted to lift it and put bigger wheels on, but the gas mileage difference is too rich for my blood. The 4.0 is a very thirsty engine.

    Have you calibrated the speedometer? If not you are going *WAY* faster than you thought you were.

    • @squarecatcreative
      @squarecatcreative 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +GETaYOTA I'd forgotten he mentioned that. I guess age & the 3-speed auto took a toll. My 1993 XJ with automatic rarely gets that low an MPG even when it's wearing 33s around town (Lakewood/Denver) unless I really got on the skinny pedal too much.

  • @MD-wq6on
    @MD-wq6on 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, I had a new '91 Wrangler and it averaged about the same MPGs. Age doesn't seem to make a difference. I hate that I ever sold my red baby. 150K on a straight 6 should not be a scare factor, actually I would be more concerned with an 3-speed auto and the trans going out before the engine.

    • @Frost517
      @Frost517 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Pro Env Its true but you dont really see it until you exsperience it in an EV. For instance I know that driving faster or up hills sucks down fuel but I never realized how much I was wasting. In cars you either save time or save money but you do not save both when driving. When I drive my volt on EV, and at 71 mph like everyone else my EV gets me to work and I have to use gas on the ay back as I have a 60 mile total commute. When I do the unthinkable in the land of NASCAR and road rage and gasoline and drive at 56 or 60 mph and get off at the nearest city and take a slower drive through downtown and do the same on the way back in stead of using 0.7 gallons of fuel I use 0.4. Its not a huge mega savings but I make minimum wage so saving an entire paycheck every year on gas means a lot for me...at the moment. Hopefully my money and job improves and fast though...
