I know im Super late but I absolutely love the jeep YJ, my dad's dad had one and gave it to my dad but he didn't take care of it and after a couple of years it stoped working and sat in the drive way for 13 years under a tree, I didn't get to rusty because the tree was big and covered it from the rain. I saw it every day when I was coming back from school and I just loved the shape of it and the headlights. So I asked him if I could have it, he said if I fixed it I could have it so I said yes of course. I fixed it and it's the best car I've ever had, I use it every day and I love it.
Used to have a 95 too, 4" lift (2" body & 2" suspension) packin some mean ass 35's. Stripped the interior and put a bikini top, aint nothing better than riding around in that bad boy, sold it though, got a Comanche. Still deciding if it was worth it...
I know this video is from a while ago. But I recently purchased a 94 YJ with 115,000 miles, it was being used to pull a plow for gardens. After replacing 2 injectors, repairing the brakes and cleaning it up doing paint touch ups I am super impressed with it last of the true Jeeps
🤦🤦🤦.... why dude Mopar is trash and I have a Jeep and I hate it it's got the inline 6 so it never dies and then every 50,000 Mi or 100,000 Mi the f****** transmission blows..... and I'm f****** sick of it but then I'm stuck with it because it's so cheap and easy to work on and easy to repair that I end up fixing it cuz I have to I will never ever buy Dodge Ford Jeep or Chrysler for me it's really Toyota or nothing they got Tacomas that are hitting the million mile mark on stock Transmissions the forerunners are absolutely Bulletproof and the same thing with the Tacomas and the Tundras if you want to be doing something crazy with your vehicle.
I have a 1993 YJ. Have had it 10 years now and have had no major issues yet. Radiator, exhaust alt and water pump. It is a 2.5, little under powered but holds its own off road. Have done about 5 to 6k in upgrades. It is still a little tank after a total of 200k miles. Love the old ones and not afraid of putting in dents and scratches. Something I would not do on a 40 or 50k Jeep.
Video very nicely done - a nice mix of trail audio, tasteful music and voice. Geared more to the audience than most offroad vids with manic music and camera operators yelling and laughing in the mic.
I have a '92 YJ with the works. On the worst of days, I can still manage a smile on my face as soon as I get in it. You really have to take advantage of using it off-road several times a month to make it worth it. It's not a practical daily driver. But 4 to 6 hours of mud, rocks, or snow every other Saturday and an overnighter in the high country every 6 weeks sure is therapeutic! For those of you tempted to buy a YJ, I have one small suggestion. Think about getting a Cherokee (XJ) for longer wheelbase, more room for gear/dogs/passengers, and find one with a Dana44 in the rear. Whether XJ or YJ, try to buy it stock and build it up so you can do it right and learn as you go. That's how you learn how things work, how to do your own repairs on the trail and how to make sure you have the spare parts and tools you need. As others have stated in these comments...air down the tires, disconnect the sway bar, remove the track bars; you will be amazed at the difference in comfort and performance. Yes, I will have a JK one day but not until my son is old enough to take over the YJ.
Awe!! It's Tommy!! That's so precious. HEY!! What do you mean "It's interior is a mid-90s Chrysler...". All the rattles I heard in this video while you were off-road is the same amount of rattles I hear in my 20 year old GMC in the city and the same as my sister's Ford on the highway!! If anything, that Chrysler interior is mopping the floor of my Sierra and my sis's Ranger. GOOD JOB, CHRYSLER!!
I had my Jeep YJ for six years, and I still love it. I don't think I will replace it with any other car. Yes, it's stocky, aggressive, very bumpy and not really fast to accelerate, but I could come up with few ideas that made it better... I installed thinner and longer leaf springs, and replaced the stock oil shocks with modern air shocks, so it drives smoother.. and I installed a turbo charger so it accelerates better
Great video, thank you. I recently bought a '96 Wrangler (when I say recently, I mean 5 months ago; and when I say '96, I mean '95, since there was an intermittent year when the square lights changed to retro round lights), and I am loving it. It just goes absolutely everywhere. From the shop down the road to up the mountain trail and beyond. It is purely utilitarian and offers no creature comforts; but isn't that exactly the point? It will get you there; but just not in a hurry. You will arrive happy because you drove it; instead of simply driving it. It is the American equivalent of the British Land Rover. And that is the best compliment ever.
For those looking at getting a used Jeep - I can agree with the Jeep buying tips here. While I would have come to the same conclusion after a little more research into Jeeps before buying one, I took a big gamble ending up getting a 1990 Sahara model with low miles, no rust, no air conditioning, with hardtop and a 5 speed for 3700 dollars. I was only shooting for a relatively cheap secondary vehicle to get me through the few snowy days we have here in the winter. The gamble was it had been downgraded to a farm vehicle some time before I got my hands on it and there were some obvious mechanical issues that I knew would have to be dealt with right off. After fixing the obvious problems, it took about a year of breakdown pains and about another 7000 dollars in parts (that includes some labor in there too) before it came together. A couple of years have gone by since that first painful year, but I can say I do really like it. Even running simple errands like getting groceries is fun when you are running with the top off. Going with an old carbureted 4.2 liter Jeep is not a bad way to go if you don’t live in a place where salting in the winter is about a daily event and can get it for the right price. Since these Jeeps are pretty easy to work on, I've learned a lot about vehicle maintenance from doing as much of the repair work as dared to do myself. The gamble I took on buying this Jeep thinking I would end up with a cheap secondary vehicle didn’t work out at all. I use it as my daily driver now and can’t complain about anything except the gas mileage. Before buying one, it does't hurt to get first hand information/advice from other Jeep enthusiasts by joining one of the online forums. - My experience and two cents worth.
+melodicdreamer72 glad you are enjoying the jeep considering you spent almost 11k for it in the end. Could have bought a lot newer jeep in better condition right off that bat for 11k but in the end, its your baby now and you have the satisfaction of knowing what work you put into it etc. I am still in the process of looking at some YJ or TJ's.. keep on Jeepin
Thanks g-shep13... Yeah, I passed up a really nice TJ with the 4.0 liter before getting the YJ. I can't complain at this point. I just got home from a couple hundred mile road trip and the Jeep ran it like a champ. I think it was wanting to do some off-roading in there, but we didn't get a chance. Anyways, its top-off weather, so good luck with making the leap. Happy Jeepin to you too when you get there.
you got a nice jeep and in the end, its just money right LOL. nice to know it ran well for you on the long trip. I will be getting my TJ in about a week. getting excited... take care.
"I know people have said they had reliability issues". Really? who said that? "Don't buy a 258 I6", Really? I don't know anyone who doesn't like their 258...
YJ's are awesome... a little harder to find aftermarket goodies but nonetheless, they have some endearing features... love the dash and the simpler suspension...
Found a six-cylinder automatic with 37,000 mi on it in kilometers imported from Japan with zero rust. Apparently it was a weekend driver I picked it up for $13,000 and I haven't looked back.
I had the 5 speed manual with a small lift and 33" tires. Same color Sahara. No rust. Wish I still had it. I keep looking for it. I customized the interior for rainy days with the hardtop off.
It’s been the most fun I’ve had in a daily driver no doubt. It’s needed a water pump and rear axle seals since I got it a few months ago, but going strong otherwise. I’m loving it
Yj interiors were'nt criticized, tj ones were because that's when they tried to make it "safer" and "more car like" and airbags came standard on tjs but yjs had no airbags at all
I had a 1995 with the 2.5 in it and it was solid as a rock. Very dependable all the way to 174k then swapped it out for a bigger engine. I always wished I had rebuilt it and put it back in and kept it that way. Very cheap and dependable. Not a torque monster but was good on fuel and loved the low range combo.

Great job Tommy, I love watching your Diff-Lock videos with your buddies! I my self have a 1987 YJ but I have to disagree with ya on the 4.0 vs 4.2. I gotta go with the 4.2/258 because anyone with a set of tools can fix those engines and give them a tune up in the garage. While fuel injection is nice, if somethings breaks I "personally" like to know how to fix it. Again thats just my opinion but to each their own! Keep the videos coming!
Leaning hard towards purchasing my first wrangler. Have always loved the YJ. Honest opinion- ‘94 YJ 115k miles, new tires, needs shock body mount. Owner Asking $2k. Should I pull the trigger? (Afraid I’ll lose my shirt replacing body mount)
Interested in more info about an automatic...my son is turning 16 soon and I'd like to get him one. While teaching him to use a straight is not an issue I like the idea of the convenience of an automatic. He will do some off road driving - we own a horse farm on a river and he drives on the farm. Thanks for any input.
Why not an automatic please explain? (I love manual sports cars) but dont enjoy the slow rolling through gears in larger vehicles and would much prefer to enjoy the ride without worrying about shifting because it's not as fun.
I love my YJ 1995 Rio Grande, also my 2014 Rubicon. Both have strong points, and weak. YJ is my first Jeep and only get one of those. Plane to up engine and Transmission. Rubicon is nice for family adventures.
Great video! I have a 96 XJ that just runs like a top (and spews oil everywhere I park of course.) With the 5 speed it's a blast to drive. Always wanted a Wrangler, but didn't consider YJ until now. I may add one to my stable someday!
i think i have soved the litte amounts of flex you leaf springs are under the axial i would suggest switching them to above the axial you would get more flex and a little bit more ground clearance
not a big fan of YJ because of the square lights. however after watch other TFL recent video the YJ . now i'm really dig into the YJ sahara like in this video i need a YJ to complete my wrangler collection 3/4 now.
That's a High-Lift jack. Think being able to jack your car up a couple of feet to get it out of trouble. It's a VERY good piece of equipment to have with you.
As a newbie jeep owner, this might be a dumb question, but can you use a high lift jack to change a tire, too? Or is it just for recovery? My 2007 Sahara came with one of those little POS black screw-type Jack's. I need something better, and if I can get all my needs met with a high-lift, I think it would be worth the investment.
You sure its a rod knock? The 4 liters are kinda noisy engines to begin with. It could be like a lifter tick or something else in the valve train making a noise.
Hey Tommy - love your Jeep videos. I've always wondered why you bought the JK Sport S? Did you just want an upgrade? I just bought my first Jeep - a '16 Rubicon - and your vids were very helpful and influential. Thanks!
+Stuka87 They are fun though. If sort of raced in my jeep time a couple times on the curves, not testing the limits or anything. As long as you don't flip it corners really well haha.
on my 2nd wrangler my first was a 1997 auto with the 6 cycl loved that jeep.... wish I had kept it. now I have a 1995 wrangler auto with the 6 cycl and love just as much as my last jeep tough it rides a bit more like a jeep lol...
You guys are wrong about the gear ratios. It's probably the fact you have big tires and haven't regeared. Many other Jeep auto such as the 42RLE and AW4 have similar if not the same ratio as the 32RH for gears 1-3. They are not to far apart.
At least with the older automatic transmissions, they have fewer gears than a manual, so they have more trouble accelerating or on the highway. They also got worse fuel economy than manuals because the ratios are bigger. I personally would _recommend_ an auto if you plan on off-roading, since, in my opinion, they are better because you're less likely to stall.
Rex late comment, but the 3 speed auto is a shitbox in the yj. it's insanely weak, it lacks any good ratio. however, an automatic is definitely better in off-road situations. in low throttle situations, you get 100% power whereas a manual you would be slipping the clutch. also in hillclimps, you don't lose power shifting gears like you would in a manual
An automatic is not regrettable at all on a trail rig. The slush-box makes it easy to apply just enough torque to turn the wheels without needlessly spinning them. "As slow as possible, as fast as necessary" is my motto on trails and that's just flat-out more joyous to me with an auto. Going manual, I'd have to have something with a really deep "granny gear" like an NP 435 or something to be really happy running off-highway trails. I love the 5-speed manual in my 4.0 Ranger XLT 4X4 but when the transfer case gets shifted into low, I wish it was an automatic, most of the time.
Great video dude, I've had my 95 YJ rio grande for almost a year as well and i love it. A lot of fun when you get 4 or 5 friends to pile into it and go drifting through open fields. Endless possibilities.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THEIR 258 ENGINE , I HAVE A 1990 JEEP YJ WITH ONLY 165,000 MILES BEFORE IT WAS A CARBURETOR HAD NO PROBLEM BUT NOW I JUST PUT A Howell EFI/TBI AND WORK AWESOME ,
I would disagree with Capricorn. If you have an auto, you don't have to worry about stalling when you're balanced on the rocks. You can just go exactly how and when you need to.
I wish people would stop with the stupid hate for the YJ.. I have had both TJ and YJ and they each have their cool points. For me, anything past mid 1991 is too Chrysler-fied. Up until then they had still had most of the original AMC engineering..
That 4Runner out there just doin its thang
YJ has one advantage -- it was the Jeep MacGyver drove :)
I was on the fence about purchasing my first YJ but honestly this SOLD me 😂 absolutely loved MacGyver as a kid.
And the Jeep used on Jurassic Park

That straight six was a heck of an engine. But use a zinc additive in the oil of any vehicle with flat tappet rockers.

in terms of yjs, they were either built in mexico or canada, canadian ones were the better as they had rust coating, and it will be in miles not km
Anton, my 95 was made in Ohio. Some factory closed down so they moved production to Ohio where the original 41' was made. I don't think I'm wrong.
I love the yj and the tj Saharas. That saddle brown or spice color does something for me.
I would love to see more videos of the '95 Wrangler!
Go with a TJ, coil over suspension which rides better and much more aftermarket parts
love that 4runner
+TheGbizaille Thats one of our vehicles over at TheWeekendWheelers, Check it out for more videos with the 4Runner and red YJ!
+TheWeekendWheelers sure i will. thanks
i think i have soved the litte amounts of flex
you leaf springs are under the axial i would suggest switching them to above the axial you would get more flex and a little bit more ground clearance
I have 35" and 4:10 axle ratio with a 258 and I get 17 mpg city
I’m about to buy this for 7k. It has 8k miles with a rebuilt engine, 160k on the dash. How is it running so far?
not a big fan of YJ because of the square lights. however after watch other TFL recent video the YJ . now i'm really dig into the YJ sahara like in this video i need a YJ to complete my wrangler collection 3/4 now.
What years was the 4.0 Liter Inline 6 offered?? From what I have been reading this engine most years was bulletproof. :)
In the YJ the 4.0 was offered '91-'95. In the video he says the 4.2 was '87-'91 but that is incorrect; '91 was 4.0
Love the yj man incredible purchase
what is that tool on the top of hood? i seen that on some wranglers often. thx ahead!
I need something better, and if I can get all my needs met with a high-lift, I think it would be worth the investment.
changing tires? yes, but block up your jeep with wood blocks....
You sure its a rod knock? The 4 liters are kinda noisy engines to begin with. It could be like a lifter tick or something else in the valve train making a noise.
Just traded a firebird that I got for basically 900 for two yjs, I love mine
Hey Tommy - love your Jeep videos. I've always wondered why you bought the JK Sport S? Did you just want an upgrade? I just bought my first Jeep - a '16 Rubicon - and your vids were very helpful and influential. Thanks!
Carburated or no? And what axles do you have under there?!
Great review! YJs rock!!
You guys have got to ditch those sway bars! The ride and articulation will greatly improve.
But glad you like it so much, thats what counts the most.
+Stuka87 They are fun though. If sort of raced in my jeep time a couple times on the curves, not testing the limits or anything. As long as you don't flip it corners really well haha.
WHAT U THINK ABOUT 1993 AUTOMATIC
Enjoyed watching your video, Thanks.
on my 2nd wrangler my first was a 1997 auto with the 6 cycl loved that jeep.... wish I had kept it. now I have a 1995 wrangler auto with the 6 cycl and love just as much as my last jeep tough it rides a bit more like a jeep lol...
I love my TJ but wish I a had better frame and leaf springs,
You guys are wrong about the gear ratios. It's probably the fact you have big tires and haven't regeared. Many other Jeep auto such as the 42RLE and AW4 have similar if not the same ratio as the 32RH for gears 1-3. They are not to far apart.
I currently have a stock 1995 YJ and looking for a 3.5 inch lift kit. Do you have any recommendations as to where I can find a complete kit?
Awesome video man!
what's the name of the music at the beginning... I've been searching this a long time. thanks.
You should be getting pretty good articulation but you have to take off your track bars and off road disconnect your sway bar.
I have a 95 that looks exactly like yours but mine has a 5 speed transmission, same seats too. Has 236,000 miles no ac
Love it, love it, love it!!!
Thrilled to know Jeep is now partly owned by Dongfeng of China 🇨🇳
Not sure how you get 11mpg, I have a 4.2 on 33" tires and I get 13.
Why not buy an automatic? Are they not as good or something?
All autos in any brand or model of car are not worth driving. Never drive an auto, it is a terribly traumatic and regrettable thing to do
An automatic is not regrettable at all on a trail rig.
Cool YJ! I am restoring a '94 YJ 4.0L SE (5-spd.)
I hope the restoration goes smoothly.
YJ's are my favorite Jeeps.
I agree!!! YJs are the best! I mean MacGyver drove a YJ, so its gotta be the best!
Great video dude, I've had my 95 YJ rio grande for almost a year as well and i love it. A lot of fun when you get 4 or 5 friends to pile into it and go drifting through open fields. Endless possibilities.
Mine has 375,000km and runs awesome
I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THEIR 258 ENGINE , I HAVE A 1990 JEEP YJ WITH ONLY 165,000 MILES BEFORE IT WAS A CARBURETOR HAD NO PROBLEM BUT NOW I JUST PUT A Howell EFI/TBI AND WORK AWESOME ,
Should off-road vehicles be manual or auto
Manual, cuz u don't have to give it gas, u just gotta let off the clutch slowly when going on hills nd stuff, at least in jeeps
I would disagree with Capricorn. If you have an auto, you don't have to worry about stalling when you're balanced on the rocks. You can just go exactly how and when you need to.
MultiPurposeReviewer, tru, but u don't even need the car on in a manual, just leave it off and put it in neutral
Capricorn 03
Going down, sure, but what about going up?
MultiPurposeReviewer
True, it depends on how steep it is and xhow long the "up hill drive" is. But if it's a minor hill, surprisingly it will work
Why are you saying DON'T buy an automatic? I'm told that's what is preferred especially while off road and on hills in tight spots.
How muck did you pay for the car?
Macgyver has a YJ from the season 2 until the end of the show
I wish people would stop with the stupid hate for the YJ.. I have had both TJ and YJ and they each have their cool points. For me, anything past mid 1991 is too Chrysler-fied. Up until then they had still had most of the original AMC engineering..
