Cockers!!! I feel your pain! I restored a Shetland 535 three years ago. I can relate 100% after 6 months of hard work I took it out down the Thames, bad experience is an understatement! couldn't get it off the trailer couldn't get it on the trailer, the launch was ungraceful. Bounced off everything in sight, couldn't get to grips with the steering (coming from a tiller controlled blow up dinghy) approached a riverside pub and smashed off everything followed by laughs and cackles from the punters, three years later I've a boat double the size and control it as graceful as a swan!!! it comes with practice and perseverance. keep it up buddy I'm loving the content. Solid thumbs up ;)
Interesting video mate, I'm also in Lincolnshire and thinking of getting my first boat, had a look at a Shetland family four. Seems just the right size. I have heard the zig zag over correcting story although I'm yet to experience it myself. I'm just getting started with your story and looking forward to seeing how things develop.
@@thecockneykayaker2239 it's on the pending pile but definitely want to do it. Just for days out mainly. Just waiting for my line manager/financial controller to make her mind up.
Love your honesty Lee. Give it time mate. Very little that's rewarding and worth doing is easy. One day you'll look back and chuckle at these first few trips.
Hi mate Just found your channel. I have just 2 weeks ago bought a shetland 640 i need to bring it from the marina at the top of the Lancaster to manchester 88miles with 20 odd locks. Never done a lock or sailed a boat. If i do half as well as you i will be happy. Oh well they say what doesnt kill you makes you stronger. Great channel mate.
Will be a great challenge and adventure I’m jealous. I’m sure you will smash it and I’d say embrace locks and swing bridges and great opportunity to stretch the legs. Let me know how you get on cheers Lee
Hi, came across your channel, good content. Just a couple of pointers. The RYA powerboat course is a really good idea for anyone who has a boat. The other pointer is your auxiliary engine seems to be in the water when you are underway. This can act as a rudder which will give you that snaking steering. Anyway, keep up the good content. All the best
First of WELL DONE ON MOWING UP GREAT JOB, practice makes perfect. I remember when I was about 14 my father and mother hired a boat for a short holiday I still remember having a go in the pilot seat and making one hell of a mess reversing. However many years later after I've been a HGV driver I tried reverse in my friends boat and found it extremely easy because it reacts the same way as an HGV vehicle does when reversing. As for a tip the only one I can give you is what my friend told me, once you have lined up with your Morning point cut power. GREAT VIDEO MATEY looking forward to seeing loads more.
Practice makes perfect, you will get there. It is always more difficult controlling a boat when the river is in flood. It may help if you lift your fenders and auxillary engine out of the water!! You can buy a rudder attachment thats fits on the outboard to give better control.... Good luck 😉
You're doing great. I find tying up the bow line (leave some slack for the curve of the bow) and reversing helps pull the boat in nice and snug. It's easier with a mate, but I've used the spring as a temporary hold before on my own. Lovely boat 👍
I was always told to Moore up against he flow of the river, so if you are going down stream go past the mooring and turn and come in under more control. Also your new engine might need a rudder plate fitting to it. Keep smiling
Just came across your channel, its nice to meet another fellow Shetland 535 owner! I had a similar stressful experience getting my 535 in the water for the first time in so long. Our first issue was the engine refused to start lol however it worked fine the day before the launch then we had an issue with reverse would not go into gear. Luckily our issue was a nylon cog in the control box that had worn down and we managed to replace it after a lot of googling and forum asking people who are more knowledgeable. We also launched on a calm sunny day and then suddenly the wind picked up and the swell was huge by the time we got to our mooring. We were almost tempted to call it a day but i am so glad we decided against selling the boat as it's proven to be a lovely vessel. I am looking forward to watching this Shetland 535 series. Your boat is well kitted out and is in lovely condition!
Just found your channel! I'm moored a bit further down near the end. I must say, your boat does look spick and span and puts most of the other ones there to shame! I had exactly the same problems when I first got mine (and still do, to a certain extent - I don't think I've ever managed a 100 percent graceful mooring!) and I've had more than my fair share of disasters, which I ought to upload at some stage. When I had it on the Broads, the steering wheel kept coming off! The tidal Ouse is certainly 'interesting' - dodging the debris is a full-on task at times. I'm planning to take up kayaking as well, so I'll be taking a lot on!
@@thecockneykayaker2239 Shame you had to move - would have valued a chinwag! I've now put a chain on my boat as well as the ropes, so it would be difficult for kids to set it adrift.
Just found your channel, problems mooring up, what l did was to engage reverse and put on opposite lock on that brings the stern in to the mooring giving you time to get a turn around the cleat. Hope that helps,
Hi Ralph from South Wales UK, ( Getting off moorings, ) if you try to keep your stern line attached, cast of bow line, and put it in reverse for a few seconds, the front of you boat will move away from the mooring. all the best.:)
I think you are doing great, its not easy conditions you have the current but the way you came to dock doesnt get any better, you are doing great.I have same boat but bigger engine 50hp and it seems to turn much easier ,maby you could look in to more torgue power like different prop just to make it better on maneuvering. Can you tell me what speed are you getting of this engine ?
I cruise around 4mph but fully open around 6mph. That’s generally the speed limits on canal and rivers. Thanks for your encouraging words much appreciated
I’ve just bought my 1st Shetland sun strip 535, coming from a paddle board so we will see how things go, what’s the name of that stick thing you use to pull your self in please 😂❤
If I go away for a few days I have a porta potti which is great. However, there are lots of facilities along the Trent as there is on the canal network
15HP on a 535.. hmm okay lol.. i got a 40 on mine and i think it can do a bit more lol.. but then mine is on the Cardigan Bay and not a little river ;)
Can any one help me out I have a shetland 535 I am having a hard time trying to find a pram hoid style canopy or somewhere that makes them if any one could help me out point me in the right direction

I’ll keep practicing mate 😩😩
If you cut power the an outboard thou you lose 95% of steering & control of boat. (Leave it in tickover )

Worth trying the RYA small boat handling course / motor boat course. Lots of practical training.
Agreed it’s bound to help

Just found your channel mate if you haven't already try putting a ad on rudder on outboard all the best daz

Also new to boating and yes, it is more difficult that it looks. Be patient and practice, it does get easier.
Your right it’s definitely not easy but practice makes perfect as they say
Looked good to me Lee, 👍
Your too kind
The flow was fast a few weeks ago during the camp and paddle. Someone told me it was because the barrage was open plus the weir further up.
Hi pal, the barrage being open would make sense
You may find adding a rudder to the outboard may help when mooring as you only get steering when its in gear and pushing water without one.
Thanks for the advice, I’ll look into it
the best way to handle the boat is pratice mate.its all about the throttle control and boat angles.you'll get it
I think you are doing great, its not easy conditions you have the current but the way you came to dock doesnt get any better, you are doing great.I have same boat but bigger engine 50hp and it seems to turn much easier ,maby you could look in to more torgue power like different prop just to make it better on maneuvering.

Wrong nit icw. You need 150 hp. Ocean run. Bahasa moon raker yags. 30000 hp hmjets 74 moh
What roof hatch is that it looks so pro does it come part of a kit?
The hatch came with the boat. Actually it’s not great. I’m gonna fit one with a gas strut this winter. But for now it is ok
