This long-awaited follow-up to Battle for Bikini Bottom is a simple, unambitious 3D platformer that pales in comparison to its peers in every way besides all the charm and humor it borrows from the iconic show. Whether it’s the incredibly basic jumping and swinging that becomes irksomely repetitive within minutes, or the humdrum combat that has you mopping up the same handful of enemies hundreds of times without anything to meaningfully differentiate the first battle from the last, Cosmic Shake badly lacks the imagination and creativity for which the show is known. The original cast’s voice performances and silly gags are certainly a highlight, but if you were hoping for something akin to Super Mario Odyssey in a pineapple under the sea, sadly this falls far short.

This game wasn't designed to be the next groundbreaking gaming experience. It was designed to be a SpongeBob experience for fans of the franchise. The average person isn't going in expecting it to change the industry, they're buying it to see the wacky sponge man cause mischief with the bloated pink balloon for a few hours.
Maybe not change the industry but, it should have been better than BBFB.

You know why cartoon platformers died with agony during the 7th gen of consoles? Because of reviews like this. Platformers didn't need any revolutionary changes, stick to what made it great, improve bit by bit without any drastic change. Hence why Spyro and Crash crashed and burn when they tried so hard to be edgy with their reboots/soft-reboot.
Edgy reboot can apply to Jax and Daxter, with crash and Spyro universal kept messing up
And why Crash so much success when It's about Time was a return to form with enough changes to keep it interesting.
So it's as fun as the last game. Got ya. I'll be buying it.

They didn't say it was bad. They said it was mediocre. As in, it's functional, but there are far better platformers out there. Such as Mario Odyssey, Ratchet & Clank, and Psychonauts 2, which were specifically name-dropped

Being a discount game isn't an excuse to not give a mediocre game a mediocre score. It costs you your time as well. And there are several great kid-friendly games, so that doesn't let it off the hook either.

Mario Sunshine was a practical spiritual successor to Super Mario 64, but they both feel different in unique ways
Though it's also clear that some part of Sunshine's physics were borrowed straight from Mario 64

Battle for Bikini Bottom was one of my all time favorite games as a kid! Pumped for this game, more of the same is just fine for me!

Don’t really understand why you went into this expecting something on the same level as Mario Odyssey, kind of a high bar to set for a SpongeBob game.
Comparing this game to Super Mario Odyssey is so unfair. Not only was that game incredibly ambitious, but it was also $60 while this is a $40 game that just wants to appeal to the people who enjoyed BFBB and SpongeBob as a whole.

No that's a really bad faith take. The game didn't age with the rest of the industry. It's stuck in the early 2000s with PS2 style gameplay and PS2 controls. Younger kids wouldn't like this now, because their sensibilities are for games that have come out in the last 10 years, not from 20 years ago.

I'm just... they're criticizing the game for being a lot like Battle For Bikini Bottom and calling BFBB "outdated" despite the fact that BFBB is beloved in the 3D platformer collectathon genre and remains beloved to this day. So of course this spiritual sequel to a fan favorite of the genre is gonna play similarly.
