- A new Spongebob 3D platformer is out. As I've established, Battle For Bikini Bottom is the GOAT. The question is whether or not Spongebob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake can stand toe-to-toe with that greatness. If I could describe this game to SpongeBob fans, it is Battle For Bikini Bottom for a new generation with the spirit of Creature From The Krusty Krab within it. For those not knowing what in the world I'm talking about, it's a great 3D platformer for all ages.

Just having a little extra money for an expanded moveset and levels designed around them would be great. The moveset is fine, but I really wanted a high jump and long jump

Not only is this game just as fun as Battle for Bikini Bottom, but the humor in this game is honestly just as good as the old episodes that we all love. They really play off of the nostalgia so well and I think Purple Lamp did a fantastic job! This game is great!

i’d be careful getting it for switch if you have other platforms to choose from. not sure if devs are going to roll out performance related patches but day one the performance could be pretty bad on switch

I'd love if they remastered the SpongeBob Movie game.
It will likely never happen, sad as I must say. That game as fun as it was, was promotional; for the movie so we'll likely get another new SB Game before we get stuff like that.
On that note, a Creature from the Krusty Krab remake doesn't sound bad though.

Unlike BfBB, the movie game is truly a terrible grind. It'd have to be a complete reimagining for it to be interesting IMO

SpongeBob battle for bikini bottom was the first game I’ve ever played. It was amazing! Glad to see it got a re-release and an amazing sequel!
Excellent review! Just got to world 4 and I am LOVING this game! It’s so refreshing to play another solid SpongeBob platformer after so many years. All of the writing really harkens back to the first seasons and it is wonderful. Hilarious and fun! Playing on the switch and I agree that the frame drop when the screen gets busy is a little wack, but so far I think the quality for the rest of the game is so good that I don’t mind it too much. I haven’t finished the game yet, but as of now it’s easy a 9/10

Fun Fact: The Cosmic Shake is a sequel to BFBB back in 2003. It took them 20 years to make a sequel. Better late than never I guess. With success of BFBBR and TCS I wonder what is next in timeline ... GTA mechanics, dryland or SPACE.
It's so cool to have unlockable costumes coming back, instead of just being DLC. Here's hoping more unlockable types and cheat codes are next!
I picked it up yesterday after I got home from work (off at 10pm) got home played til 3am. Super engaging. Honestly, If I'm a man child for playing it then so be it. It's fun! It's nostalgic. The graphics(especially for PS4) and are absolutely fantastic! They honestly if it was more open world and less linear I'd have paid $60 for it.
Thanks for bringing up the performance of the Switch version. Although it is disappointing to hear about those frame drops, the port looks pretty solid. I'm excited to play through the game tomorrow! I do think that Purple Lamp Studios is working on refining a more in-depth moveset for a singular character in this case Spongebob. My hope is to see Sandy, Patrick, Squidward, and maybe Mr. Krabs playable with a unique moveset as expansive as Cosmic Shake's Spongebob in future titles. You can really tell they love the ip!

The game is 72% at metacritic a decent score but this plathformer deserve more is like a lost gem coming from the glorious days of the 1990's

I hope you are right about Purple Lamp teetering towards a full on Open world SpongeBob game. Would be legendary.
Despite it being for kids or not, you are obligated to pay for it, so it's fair to judge just like you would for any Mario or Sonic game---which are games we take seriously when looking for quality. And this honestly seems to be up there with one of the more interesting 3D platformers, not just "another licensed game"
Definitely gonna pick this up at some point. Looks like another sweet, sweet victory for licensed games. 🙂
Heads up everyone. This game is also on android and ios for only $10 bucks and runs and looks great on a modern device, and has controller support
I've pre ordered the game like a week or 2 ago because I was a huge fan of BFBB and after seeing the sweet victory trailer they did for this new game and saw that u did a review on this new spongebob game I am now officially even more excited to play it
I got a save corruption right after starting the game. I didn't know this, because I was playing on Switch and just put the console to sleep. I had finished the game and was gathering the collectables when I finally turned off my system and relaized I had no save. After that, all new saves were fine. But brother, what a gut punch.
Today I learned that I'm the same age as Matty. Not only that, but that I'm older than him by a month :O
We have very similar taste in games, and I totally see why now. Us 1995'ers sure know how to pick 'em ;) Great video as always!
I loved the game. I was happy 100% of the time I played it... made me feel like a happy 12-year-old again. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else except people who get me though... and kids 😄. It's VERY simple and easy game.
This game still has the spirit of when the show was good.
It's a licensed game, sure. So don't expect it to be a Super Mario Odyssey.

The level design philosophy absolutely intrigues me. Just got finished playing Tunic and I'm looking for something to scratch that interconnected world itch.
Matty PLEASE check out Hell Pie. It's a newer 3D platformer clearly inspired by the 3D platforming era of games. It's really good.

For adults, I recommend turning off the tutorials. Sure, you'll get stuck at points. But for them just press every button. You'll figure out what does what easily. It is a simple game to understand

They should make an open world Spongebob game where you can replay all the levels within bikini bottom
My only real complaint, would be that no matter docked or handheld, their colors looked washed out. Everywhere but the Halloween area look too bright. That looked too dark.
With the mention of Creature from the Krusty Krab, I'm surprised you haven’t reviewed it yet. Would like to see that one next.
This game fills me with so much joy, BFBB was my shit and this is more of something I love
Edit: the GBA version of Creature from the Krusty Krab is actually a banger. It has a whole minigame arcade and really banging music.
The frame rate issues on the Switch version kinda stinks, but I played Pokémon Scarlet, so I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

Been through the first 3 worlds so far and it is some good classic platforming fun till it ISN'T.
yeah so theres this bug were a bubble surfboard that is suppose to take you from point A to B and the Surfboard doesnt load, the sparkler effect highlighting it appear but the object itself doesn't.
I tried reloading the area, loading a previous save, rebooting the game, nothing is fixing it and I'm unaware of anyone else experiencing this issues (but give it time)
Thankfully there is a levitation glitch that is stupid hard to pull off but it gets you passed areas you cant access due to the surfboard bug.
If this surfboard mechanic was a gimmick used once on occasion I'd be more tolerable but in order to resume the game you must do insane glitchy platforming with the levitation glitch just to progress.
Still having fun but when I have no choice and am forced to use the levitation glitch it takes the fun out of it cause it can really be a pain to pull off.
Hopefully a patch is made.

That is very interesting about the audio glitches because Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated also had issues with audio not synching up on the PC version, especially on the steam deck.
The Stadia version had similar issues, back when that was a thing.

One of the things I loved about battle for bikini bottom was exploring the houses in the hub world as they are iconic locations....and this might seem small but is a huge let down for me

Seems like a great game, a little bummed about the reduction of interior exploration tho. I feel like we’re getting to the point of next-gen and gameplay that it would be possible to explore everything in Bikini Bottom.

Went on CD keys and found it for $26! After PayPal credits, paid $13! This game blew my expectations out of the water. This game is pretty great! Characters and voices are pretty good, and gameplay is really nice!
Wish this game had a Dutch dub as well but I guess that was too much asked from THQ.
Dude! This is Yellow Dead Redemption! If theres one thing i dont like its the removal of the bubble bash move. I found myself wanting to do that move a lot. But eventually I got use to not having it. I love that theres no invisible walls to block creative platforming opportunities. Plus, i wish the ending credits was a guitar hero mini game with a music video of the in game engine rock concert song they used for the first trailer.
I'm definitely gonna pick it up on Playstation once i get my controller situation fixed. If i have to wait a bit i'll definitely make it a birthday gift to treat myself

About the technical bugs, yes, are on the ps4 as well. Which yes, can be quit annoying...but over all still a fun game. Also respect to the studio for giving the german dub the original german voices from the show again like in dehydrated. Before that we never got the original cast

Battle for Bikini Bottom is to SpongeBob what Hit and Run is to the Simpsons ... the licensed pinnacle of a franchise. That said, Cosmic Shake is to Sponge Bob what Into the Nexus is to Ratchet and Clank, short ... sweet, what we want and nothing more.

IGN scored this game and Battle For Bikini Bottom a 5. They attempted to compare Cosmic Shake to Super Mario Odyssey..Obviously it's not that game but it doesn't need to be..Terrible review site.
Imagine after this they remaster the Movie game then completing the trilogy (quadrilogy if Truth or Square gets one too)

Steam player here, playing on a mid range PC or the steam deck the game was flawless in terms of performance. What sucks is that the game doesn't have steam cloud saves so I had to play on the first PC I started on and ended up playing the intro 3 times till I realized what was going on lol
I am curently living in my parents house t the age of 16 and growing up, my older sister (I am the oldest not her) loved to watch Spongebob. As a todler she'd cry if spongebob the movie was over and so it was replayed from the beginning. Until it was time for meals and what not. But anyway I like spongebob but not as in love, persay, but I enjoyed it. My favorite character is (it's obvious I'm gonna say Spongebob or Partick, right?) Fred. Mr. MY LEEEEEGGGG!!! guy.
Well, Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated is a GOATED game I got to hand it to you Retro Rebound, but Cosmic Shake is goated for a different reason: It embraces the memes as idle easter eggs.
I'm into more of the horror genre when it comes to videogames: Resident Evil is my favorite franchise, and RE4 is my favorite among that franchise, along with the remake; but I enjoy the LEGO games, the Arkham games, the star wars games, COD, Battlefront, ect.
And then theres the Nintendo games, where Zelda is my favorite franchise in the Nintendo world and BOTW is my fvorite among that franchise.
Now don't get me wrong, Ii played on the switch, all three versions. The lite is slippery when i use it so I have to wear heat-resistant gloves. The oled and v2 is fine but all three, what do they have in common? They feel like flimsy pieces of plastic that'll snap under my grasp. I can lift up my littlest goat who weighs maybe 5o pounds less than his brothers and dad.
To get you a size comparison between his brothers, his brothers are the weight of our car put together, but smaller then the dad.
I can also pick up our big dogs and they are less heavier than the goats but they can be held a full 15secs. Anyways I can pick up the smallest goat (and trust me my dad whose only 2 feet taller than me, which he's 6'1") and my dogs whom are heavy to anyone else, and I wanted a beefier Nintendo console. The Steam Deck delivers since not only do I want a console that won't break in 2 in a snap, but a console that can play dedecated AAA games since RE Village is my favorite Resident Evil game since it came out but 4 is remake is slowly making me wanna love it more. I played 4 to its fullest and I don't want to play or watch someone play the game because I want to keep the memories of the game forever. And since I'd mostly play RE's 2,3,4 remake, 7, and 8 I need the Deck.
Yeah, Ii need the switch to play nintendo games but there's ways to get nintendo games on the deck. And besides, I'm a writer, though for now I'm unpublished; Peter Anthony Productions Inc allowed me to turn one of his older movies (Friday the 13th part 7 Rose Blood) into a movie novelization and now I have to wait for his response. He doesn't get back right away so for now I'm an unpublished 16 year old writer.

Concerning the bathtub enemies, it is possible to speed up the process significantly. Just line up a smaller enemy behind them, and do a Karate Kick, which'll hit the Heavies instead, leaving them open for attack. Nowhere in the game tells you this, it's just kind of a secret technique that can be figured out by accident. So that's kinda cool to a degree!
Overall tho, Cosmic Shake's a really F.U.N. game! Completed it twice n PS4 & got the platinum. It's got a couple pop-in issues for cutscenes, and the audio issues are also present. Purple Lamp did an amazing job otherwise, and I can't wait to see what's next for them!
