Making Art with the Masters: Edward Gorey Ep. 2 - Exploring Techniques

- Welcome back to this series and episode 2, Exploring Techniques. I only talk for the first 3 mins so if you want to skip ahead to the art making just fast forward to 3:27 for a timelapse tour through the projects associated with this lesson.
Supply list for this lesson - some paper and a pen. I discuss the options that I am using at the beginning of the video.
Lesson projects:
In your art journal for this lesson, explore the marks that Edward Gorey makes. You can reference any of his drawings (find these online through a simple "Edward Gorey Illustrations" google search or, if you have any of his books, just page through and look at the types of marks that he makes.
Edward Gorey is a master at cross-hatching so be sure to practice that as well. You can follow along with my examples.
The other part of the lesson is to copy three of Edward's illustrations. I chose fairly simple ones and I tried using different pens and inks in each.

actually I started searching about Edward Gorey because I can relate with his "weird" art. My art style is also a bit creepy and seeing other artists who follow this type of aesthetic makes me feel better about my own art. I loved the videos! Nice job

It's understandable that imitating and replicating a famous illustrator can be a useful tool in one's development as an artist but we need to stress the fact that copying the drawings of others should not be the end goal, merely a tool for practice. Emulating another person's style is a teetering fence to be on because as creators we each should find and explore our very own graphic "look" and flavor, and not borrow too heavily. Each of us ought to create our own character designs and settings. Just wanted to put that out there.
I enjoy Mr. Gorey and his artwork tremendously. I really ought to buy a big print of that 1980s poster featuring his lovely and macabre drawing for the PBS Mystery television series intro. Although to be frank about Gorey, his personality and opinions often verged for me on being too wry, curmudgeonly and catty (catty ... that's ironic, haha). I suppose we must call him an eccentric, which is a term that was used on someone who was, well, a smidge wacky or even rude. Do they still label people with that word nowadays? Haven't heard it in many moons. Anyway, he clearly didn't give much of a hoot about what people thought of him!
Yes he was amazing! I love his work.
And sure we must find our own style but art students have been copying the masters for hundreds of years - it’s literally part of lots of art school curriculums. Of course I’m not saying that’s all any student should do 🤗 - one can learn a lot and be influenced by trying the techniques of the masters. But I hear you and understand where you are coming from. 😃

Copying is extremely important as a learning tool, how do you think gorey learned ? He didn’t invent pen and ink
@@chadclay1643 Read my thoughts again--- I am not denying that copying the work of others is not a good tool for developing oneself as an artist. My whole point was that, when it comes down to talent and creativity, being *original* is more important than trying to create work similar to others (beyond mere practice techniques). If you didn't get that from my comment, I can't help that.

@@FindingMyMuse the only thing I'd add...and I wouldn't have said anything but since you seem willing to learn... "Making art with the master's" could imply that you are calling yourself a master...try adding a "but" somewhere ie art but no straight lines...it's the new clickbate, but keep it honest to what you are doing
Thank you! Yes I’m always happy to hear from someone who watched a video and has constructive feedback! I’m still learning and want to grow my channel. Yes, agree that it could sound like I’m calling myself a “master” but was really referring to - in this case - Edward Gorey - so that I was trying to say that *I* am making art with the master [artist, Edward Gorey]. Let me try to figure out a better way to say it though I’m loathe to rename this series - maybe a tag line that explains it more? What do you think about that? Thanks for the advice! 🤙🤙
