  • Welcome to Part 3 of My Gashlycrumb Diaries, in which I draw (as much as I can) like Edward Gorey to create a background for my October videos. I like how it turned out - enjoy!

      Whoa - hairspray in 1969. Skirts lengths in 1969 (I couldn't have handled that)! Thanks for watching! :)

    I Think it was from "Faris Bullers Day Off" where the school secretary keeps pulling pencils from her hair! Always a plentiful stash hidden!

    I first knew Edward Gorey from his illustrations for the TV show “Mystery!” on PBS. I remember the gravestone with the winking skull, the ballroom, the croquet player & the woman on the building.

    • @rachealgetscreative
      @rachealgetscreative  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yes, the famous fainting lady with the handkerchief!

    • @JeremiahsFiles
      @JeremiahsFiles ปีที่แล้ว

      The building that the fainting woman was on was from one of Edward Gorey’s books, The West Wing. There’s also a play called Gorey Stories, the actors recite some limericks from The Listing Attic, & act out some of Edward Gorey’s stories like The Hapless Child, The Curious Sofa, The Gilded Bat & The Blue Aspic, & sing the words to some of his other stories like The Wuggly Ump, The Insect God & The Gashlycrumb Tinies.

    He's been one of my favorite artists since I was a wee one and loved watching this! I'm a new subscriber, Rachel and we're likely close in age ;) I love the way you explain things, have fun and be yourself! The pencil in your hair reminded me of one of the book characters, Edward did art illuminations for. Myra Elles, the librarian in the Jonny Dixon series by John Bellairs.

      Wow, you are a more knowledgeable Gorey fan than I am. I"m not as familiar with the art he did for others' work. If you are near 51, we are of an age. I say "awesome" a lot in a recent video; child of the 1980s. Thank you for your kind words and for subscribing! ❤

    I know I still need to catch up on some of your videos, and I'm trying to watch them chronologically, but I could NOT wait for Goreytober! Your drawing came out so good! He's got such a unique style and you nailed it! I am so excited to see the rest!

      Thanks for the kind comment! :) And go at whatever pace you wish - but it is spooky season and Gorey is the best kind of spooky. Random question - do you and J dress up for Halloween?

    I believe Edward would approve, especially of your cat joining in your art making (he had several cats who crawled over his workspace). Since you asked, yes - he used India ink with dip pens with very fine nibs - his favorite were Gillott Tit Quill nibs, which are very delicate, or C. Howard Hunt 104s (until they stopped production).
    I think you did a lovely tribute! Should you ever visit Cape Cod, visit his home, which is open as a museum most of the year. They have a sampling of his pens and nibs on display. His actual studio is upstairs, and not on the tour, but you can find pictures of it.

      What wonderful information! Thank you! I knew he was a cat lover (and bug lover, etc.) and his house is definitely on my list to visit should I ever travel to Cape Cod. You seem like a big fan of his so I really appreciate your approval of my Gorey project. :)🦇

      @@rachealgetscreative I'm a big fan of his work, and have a modest collection. I live about 15 minutes or so from The Gorey House Museum and am a Member. Every year, they dress the home with new exhibits -- this year, it's his "moveable" books (e.g., The Tunnel Calamity and The Dwindling Party are heavily featured, as are The Dripping Faucet and his tiny books collection).
      And I want to repeat, I loved your video and think he'd get a kick out how you're leveraging your background (he was a constant tinkerer).
