    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Otter (Tim Matheson) makes a stirring defense of the Deltas' drunken shenanigans.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director John Landis put himself on the map with this low-budget, fabulously successful comedy, which made a then-astounding 62 million dollars and started a slew of careers for its cast in the process. National Lampoon's Animal House is set in 1962 on the campus of Faber College in Faber, PA. The first glimpse we get of the campus is the statue of its founder Emil Faber, on the base of which is inscribed the motto, "Knowledge Is Good." Incoming freshmen Larry "Pinto" Kroger (Tom Hulce) and Kent "Flounder" Dorfman (Stephen Furst) find themselves rejected by the pretentious Omega fraternity, and instead pledge to Delta House. The Deltas are a motley fraternity of rejects and maladjusted undergraduates (some approaching their late twenties) whose main goal -- seemingly accomplished in part by their mere presence on campus -- is disrupting the staid, peaceful, rigidly orthodox, and totally hypocritical social order of the school, as represented by the Omegas and the college's dean, Vernon Wormer (John Vernon). Dean Wormer decides that this is the year he's going to get the Deltas expelled and their chapter decertified; he places the fraternity on "double secret probation" and, with help from Omega president Greg Marmalard (James Daughton) and hard-nosed member Doug Neidermeyer (Mark Metcalf), starts looking for any pretext on which to bring the members of the Delta fraternity up on charges. The Deltas, oblivious to the danger they're in, are having a great time, steeped in irreverence, mild debauchery, and occasional drunkenness, led by seniors Otter (Tim Matheson), Hoover (James Widdoes), D-Day (Bruce McGill), Boon (Peter Riegert), and pledge master John "Bluto" Blutarsky (John Belushi). They're given enough rope to hang themselves, but even then manage to get into comical misadventures on a road trip (where they arrange an assignation with a group of young ladies from Emily Dickinson University). Finally, they are thrown out of school, and, as a result, stripped of their student deferments (and, thus, eligible for the draft). They decide to commit one last, utterly senseless (and screamingly funny) slapstick act of rebellion, making a shambles of the university's annual homecoming parade, and, in the process, getting revenge on the dean, the Omegas, and everyone else who has ever gone against them.

I was also a college freshman fall of '78, this movie & "Up In Smoke" came out w/in weeks of each other - we all went to see both - needless to say, my freshman year was a literal Riot - the college (Univ of Pittsburgh) had to call a special meeting of Freshman/Sophomore dorm residents at the basketball arena & plead "no more food fights - our maintenance budget for the entire academic year has already been used up". I also heard The Rolling Stones' Some Girls album every day of my freshman year. Every. Single. Day.

This might be one of the funniest parts of the movie. Every detail - Hoover's initial whisper, Boon's outburst, Hoover and Katie's reactions - is simply perfect. It isn't a grand joke, nor is it super special, but the cast and crew of Animal House made sure it was done as perfectly as you could expect. Kudos to them.

Jimmy, one of the many highlights of a very funny movie released in July 1978, reflecting an era of 15+ years earlier (1962-63). Supposedly according to the film's script, the parade at the end took place on Thu. Nov. 21, 1963, the day before President Kennedy was murdered. Love the float with the girls all dressed as Jacqueline, wearing her pink suits and iconic pillbox hats that she wore the next morning.

I'm not kidding, I saw a follow-up "Where are they now" short film where they actually interviewed the actors in character. Dr. Eric Stratton was a gynecologist in Beverly Hills, Katy and Schoenstein married and divorced several times, Otis Day remembered playing the frat party and they found Mrs. Wormer drinking in a bar. Chip Diller was working as a missionary in Africa and sent in a tape recording where he answered the list of questions that he was sent.

Not to be pedantic, but Fletcher ( Dean Wormer) wasn’t the redlegs commander; he was their reluctant ally. After the North’s betrayal of Jose Wales’ guérilla force following their surrender- a surrender Fletcher orchestrated-he felt that the only way to resolve the situation was to help the redlegs hunt down and kill Wales, despite having fought beside him and against the redlegs during the war. Something about the 70's. It produced two of what may become the best comedies ever made, Animal House and Smokey and the Bandit. Even the TV SitComs were some of the best, Sanford & Son, MASH, All in the Family, WKRP in Cincinnati, etc..... I'm getting old but some of the comedies made in the 60's and 70's were IMHO the best. Hell, might as well throw in a few of the 60's SitComs as well like I Dream of Jennie, The Beverly Hillbillies, Hogans Heros, Bewitched, The Munsters and The Adams Family.

Verna Bloom (Mrs Wormer) died this year. Cesare Danova, who played the mayor, died in 1992. Possibly some others in minor roles as well, as this was made in 1978. A 20 year old at that time would be around 61 today. Those 40+ would be in their 80s. John Landis, the director, will be 70 this coming year. Harold Ramis (probably best known as Egon in the Ghostbusters movie) was a writer for the movie. He died in 2014. Elmer Bernstein, who did the musical score for the movie, died in 2004 as did the film's DP, Charles Correll.
