Flounder (Stephen Furst) accidentally kills Neidermeyer's horse.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director John Landis put himself on the map with this low-budget, fabulously successful comedy, which made a then-astounding 62 million dollars and started a slew of careers for its cast in the process. National Lampoon's Animal House is set in 1962 on the campus of Faber College in Faber, PA. The first glimpse we get of the campus is the statue of its founder Emil Faber, on the base of which is inscribed the motto, "Knowledge Is Good." Incoming freshmen Larry "Pinto" Kroger (Tom Hulce) and Kent "Flounder" Dorfman (Stephen Furst) find themselves rejected by the pretentious Omega fraternity, and instead pledge to Delta House. The Deltas are a motley fraternity of rejects and maladjusted undergraduates (some approaching their late twenties) whose main goal -- seemingly accomplished in part by their mere presence on campus -- is disrupting the staid, peaceful, rigidly orthodox, and totally hypocritical social order of the school, as represented by the Omegas and the college's dean, Vernon Wormer (John Vernon). Dean Wormer decides that this is the year he's going to get the Deltas expelled and their chapter decertified; he places the fraternity on "double secret probation" and, with help from Omega president Greg Marmalard (James Daughton) and hard-nosed member Doug Neidermeyer (Mark Metcalf), starts looking for any pretext on which to bring the members of the Delta fraternity up on charges. The Deltas, oblivious to the danger they're in, are having a great time, steeped in irreverence, mild debauchery, and occasional drunkenness, led by seniors Otter (Tim Matheson), Hoover (James Widdoes), D-Day (Bruce McGill), Boon (Peter Riegert), and pledge master John "Bluto" Blutarsky (John Belushi). They're given enough rope to hang themselves, but even then manage to get into comical misadventures on a road trip (where they arrange an assignation with a group of young ladies from Emily Dickinson University). Finally, they are thrown out of school, and, as a result, stripped of their student deferments (and, thus, eligible for the draft). They decide to commit one last, utterly senseless (and screamingly funny) slapstick act of rebellion, making a shambles of the university's annual homecoming parade, and, in the process, getting revenge on the dean, the Omegas, and everyone else who has ever gone against them.

"Senior Pranks" were popular in my day. Parking a VW bug inside a school. Or stealing all the giant fake animals from a putt putt course and putting them on the roof of the school.
Hell we'd do similar things while we were still in high school in this day in age regardless of security cameras or getting caught. We'd cover our school mascot (a taxidermied bear) with bras, and one guy literally put our high school on sale on craigslist and the sales pitch said "comes with a free principal and staff" 🤣🤣🤣🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
It was still like that in the late 90s. I'm quite certain I wouldn't like college today.

The freeze-frame on the horse was PERFECT.
I must admit that while I feel sorry for the horse I always die of laughter when it makes that noise and the camera freezes like that!
The only time I heard that noise was in a Little Rascals episode where a horse got drunk.
@Elliot Fogg it's a cheap effect that is easy to do, instead of having a horse drop dead on command.
The part where Bluto slips was not in the script. John actually slipped and fell but kept going on with the scene.
John Belushi completely owned this role. RIP

Actually the best part is the next morning when the maintenance guy is measuring the horse and then the door in the background and at the end of the scene he pull starts a chainsaw.

The musical score in this movie is genius, they scored it completely “serious,” which adds so much to the movie.
My question is did they film Belushi sneaking around and THEN write the score? Cuz the music is spot on to his movements!
@@34WitchdoctorYeah, that's the way score composers work. They are handed the complete finished and cut movie and they tailor make the music to fit the action in each scene. Landis was lucky enough to get Elmer Bernstein, one of the great movie musical scorers of all time to compose this because he was a family friend. Landis and Bernstein's son went to school together. Bernstein was an Oscar winner and composed scores for "To Kill a Mockingbird" "The Magnificent Seven" "Hud" "The Sweet Smell of Success" "The 10 Commandments" "The Great Escape" etc.

00:26 According to John Landis, director of the film, John Belushi, Rest in Peace, fall was NOT on the script.. He slid and fell..So, Landis told him "to get up".. They could have done a second take. However, Landis decided to keep it in the film...
It works so perfectly with the music leading up to that moment. Had no idea for all these years

Yep, as they say, it is the simple things in life you treasure. This movie was made with such a low budget and yet it raked in millions. And now a days there are movies that have spent millions and yet can't hold their own. I can't help but think every time I see a parade that one day I will see that "Eat Me" cake barreling down the midway causing havoc! Absolutely classic. And John Belushi, one of the best comedic actors ever! It is a shame we lost him so soon.

This whole movie was just one good scene after another. That is hard to do in a comedy. Granted that is what SUPPOSED to happen, but it rarely does. This is one of the few comedies that gets it all right.

Every time this movie is on TV, my elderly dad wants to watch it, even if he's seen it a million times and starts having laughing fits at the freeze frame part! He also does the same thing when Young Frankenstein is on, and they do a freeze frame close-up of Igor's face!

God, I went to high school with a guy who dressed like Bluto in this clip -- too short corduroy pants, high-top sneakers, crappy leather coat and all. D-Day reminds me of a guy I rode bikes with back in the 1960s. BEST clip from any movie -- ever!
