Great job Alex, as always very well presented and easy to understand. Of the sooo many videos I have watched here on Davinci Resolve, I regard yours as the best by a wide margin when it comes to the ability to teach others. There is a big difference in knowing it and being able to teach it effectively, you have mastered both very well. Just don't stop!!!! Cheers

Thank you!! This is just the information I needed in order to figure out how to do greenscreen work when the greenscreen doesn't fully cover the frame. I now understand (hopefully) how to first composite the edges of the shot to also be green before before applying the greenscreen effect. (Which should work so long as the subject stays within the field of the actual greenscreen.)

Good Video - I find two types of videos helpful - The "functional" explanations of what different things do and how, as you did in this video and then application of these functions. I've used masks in this and other software, but did not know HOW they work as much as just what they do. Knowing how they work gives me better control and also lets me expand on how to combine other functions to come up with more creative possibilities. Sometimes I don't even realize when my understanding of function is limited until someone who understands the function at greater depths, shares their knowledge and skills... Hope this gives you some food for thought!

Thank you for this video! I think of it as a merge node in the Fusion page. Foreground would pipe the image into the foreground input of the Merge tool. Alpha would be connected to the effect mask input dictating where the Merge takes place.

MrAlexTech, I am loving this new feature! Thanks for your easy-going nature and teaching skills...i totally got it as a new Resolve user. 🙏😀 Is it possible to do an ink transition type of video using this method? Of course, there are tons of ink transition tuts out there but all they are Fusion-centric. On top of that, some of 'em try to do multiple things such as color correction, gradient etc. ...gets too overwhelming for the new users!

Is there a way to draw a specific form of alpha? To place a shaped foreground video in a specific place of the main video, or may be there is some other trick for this? Example - base video - room, foreground - outside view and we look at it from the room through rounded window or irregularly shaped hole. Thanks.

I can see this alpha masking as a super easy transition with a gradient from black (0% alpha) to white (100% alpha). Not only straight gradient but also shapes containing a gradient and outside of the shape black/white or even another gradient. Or animated alpha mask by using a videos luminance or green channel, or ... you name it.
Changing the transition by changing the alpha mask picture/video.
Some serious advanced transistions without the need to go into fusion.

Awesome! Thanks for this. I'm new to Resolve, and thought I could only mask through Fusion, which seemed like overkill to me. Previously in Vegas Movie Studio, I just had a transparent png for the mask, assign one track as alpha, the other as the child, and boom, done. Nice to know Resolve can do this just as easily without Fusion.

Hi Alex, cool and easy to get tutorial.
I am just starting go get my hands around mattes, and I sense your tutorial about alphas is a good starting points - if not the best - at least for me.
Did I get it right that the whole principle of mattes and alphas is to use the principle of allowing something (a text, a picture, another video) 'shine through' some sort of a mask with the luminosity of certain areas of the maks determining what shines through and what not. The more white an area of the mask is the more it will let things 'shine through' and vice versa?
