What Happened to the Cast of NEWHART (1982-1990) After the Show Ended

  • Newhart was a sitcom that aired on CBS from October 25, 1982, to May 21, 1990. Dick Loudon and his wife Joanna decide to leave New York City to buy a little inn in Vermont. Dick writes how-to books, and eventually becomes a local television celebrity as the host of "Vermont Today". George Utley is the handyman at the inn, and Leslie Vanderkellen is the maid who has ambitions of being an Olympic Ski champion. Later, her cousin Stephanie would replace her at the Inn and her boyfriend is Dick's yuppie television producer, Michael Harris. There are many other quirky characters in this fictional little town, including Dick's neighbors Larry, and his brother Darryl, and his other brother Darryl. Besides sharing a name, the 2 Darryls never speak, that is, until the final episode. But what happened to the cast members after the show ended?

My mother was always "picky" about the tv shows she watched. She fell in love with "Newhart" for years, and never missed an episode. She even had her quilting and rug braiding groups change their meeting nights so she could be home to watch "Newhart."
Good acting, sometimes corny plots, dry comedy, and memorable characters (who could forget Joanna in those sweaters or the three brothers or the cleaning lady???). No foul language, no sex, no violence----just good shows, week after week, year after year. They just don't make shows like "Newhart," and judging from what's on tv today, I doubt that they ever will.

I'll never forget the final episode of NEWHART when Bob Newharts wakes up in bed and looks over to his wife and it's Suzanne Pleshette (from the original Bob Newhart Show) not Mary Fran! So, the entire NEWHART show was all a dream! Hilarious lol

Fun fact: Newhart’s first season was shot on videotape, while the rest of the seasons were shot on film. The show was retooled after the first season, getting rid of Leslie the maid and replacing her with Stephanie. The look of the show changed dramatically, going from the harsher look of videotape to the softer, more refined look of film. It was highly unusual for any show to change from one format to another, but the network believed Newhart would be successful enough to warrant the more expensive production costs of shooting on film. They were right.

Back in the mid '80s when I was a broadcast major at Arizona State University who's goal was to become a sitcom writer, I was given permission to visit MTM Studios and the set of Newhart. One day Bob was standing at the audience railing looking at the set. I was standing just a couple feet away, but was too star struck to speak to him. Several years later when I was working as a humor writer for Hallmark Cards, I wrote to Bob and told him about that experience. He sent me a nice note and an autographed photo that read "From one comedian to another. Bob Newhart." It's one of my most cherished possessions. I got to visit the Newhart set about five times during my last two years of college. Everybody I met there treated me extremely well. They were truly a great group of people!

I have a feeling that actor Peter Scolari had fun with the 'Michael Harris' character; which for me was a relatable character as he was a slight exaggeration of the shallow Yuppie types I worked with in an office setting back in the 1980s; and earlier when I was in the retailing sector of the music records industry when dealing with music company reps.
I can imagine Scolari's inspiration of the Harris character came from those he was acquainted with in Hollywood back then.

I never watched a single episode of this series. I grew up watching the original Bob Newhart Show, which will always be by far the best to me. I think making this series was a mistake. It's kind of like replacing a character on a show with a different actor and expecting it to work. Here they put an actor who was so well known from the original Bob Newhart Show into another series after he had already developed an identity on another show. You can do that on some shows, but not one where that actor is also the star and even the name of the show. Bob Newhart had already been typecast as Dr. Robert Hartley. The way they ended this series pretty much proved that. The first show was the real thing, this one was just a dream. And no disrespect to Mary Fran, but she was no Suzanne Pleshette.
