Yes, those who did not recognize the set suddenly realized what was going on when Suzanne turned on the lights and started speaking... that explains the eruption of the audience at that moment, sounds that I'm sure echoed in homes across the nation that night as even casual viewers of the Bob Newhart Show made the connection.

In my defense, our daughter was sick with chicken pox, and I had been tending to her only catching bits of the episode!
There was an intentional leak. Tom Poston "let slip" the whole Japanese golf course thing and that Bob gets hit on the head with a golf ball and goes to heaven where he meets up with God played by George Burns. I was really sad that the leak turned out to be true until the light turned on in the Hartley's bedroom. The misdirection made the whole thing so much better.
@@frankwm1988 Was the slo-mo golf ball hitting him in the head scene later referenced in "Seinfeld" (Kramer being knocked unconscious by tennis balls)? I wonder...
There was a risk because then when you'd watch it in syndication, you'd remember that it all is a dream and it might spoil it for you. Looking back, I guess it was good since the series was so bizarre to begin with, it would be a dream for somebody, like Bob Hartley, a psychiatrist.
Oh, man, thanks for posting this! The part where the two Darryls finally speak one word in the entire series is pricless. And the final scene is just brilliant.
"Quiet!!" Right down to the little MTM closing kitty. Even better than i remembered it. Bob was a genius, and so was Mrs Bob, Ginnie Newhart, whose idea the closing scene was. RIP to Tom Poston, Mary Frann, and Suzanne Pleshette. One of the best television wives in TV history.
@@dahmaricloyd1858 That's the same song at the beginning and end of all the episodes just with some changes to the violins. I think its by Henry Mancini specifically made for the show.

I genuinely doubt it will ever be topped in it's brilliance.
I was a kid when this show was on and my mother absolutely loved Newhart. I remember watching the finale with my mother and always liked Larry, Darryl, and Darryl. This ended perfectly. Rest ever most peacefully, Bob.
Seconds before the Darryl"s yelled "quiet," I said to my siblings "wouldn't it be funny if they talked tonight?" It's funny how your memories play tricks on you;I could have sworn that Fran Drescher played Larry's wife.

The Bob Newhart Show was before my time but I saw some of it in syndication and remember being being so pleasantly surprised when she turned the light on! It's still the best sitcom ending I think.
I knew it was coming, but I was still stunned when I read that Bob Newhart had passed away. I listen to several episodes of this iconic show every night to fall asleep. It's so comforting. RIP Bob.
Oh my absolute joy when the bedroom light came on. Instantly knew what was going to happen. I laughed and laughed. It was a perfect moment in time, and a perfect ending to a show. I don't think it can ever be beat. Thanks for all the laughs Bob. You were the man.
And Emily showed more affection to Bob in their one closing scene than Joanna had to Dick in the entire proceeding eight years of the show- even factoring being annoyed at Bob telling her his dream!
Arguably the all-time best series finale. The set was familiar looking enough that I sensed what was coming before the Suzanne Pleshette reveal, but it was still an out-of-the-park, homerun finisher.
MTM produced three of the funniest episodes in TV history: The finale of Newhart, the "I thought turkeys could fly" episode of WKRP, and "Chuckles Bites the Dust" from the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Brilliantly conceived, written, directed and performed.
4:12 - The two Darryls yelling "QUIET!"...the only word they ever said in the entire series! (That word was heard again on the MTM logo at the 10:29 mark!)
@@randallulrich No, it wasn't because of that. Tony and John could do lines. It was when they came on board the first time, the idea was to have these three brothers basically sharing the same brain and Larry, the leader, having most of it. Tony and John didn't mind not having lines, in fact, if the writers decided to have them talk, they'd tell them, "No, it's better this way." The idea was that they could talk if they wanted to, they just chose not to. This was a situation where they felt, "Okay, this is too much. We'll handle this instead of Larry."
I don't normally go for those "it was all a dream" endings, but in THIS CASE ONLY........ it was totally brilliant, and I have to agree with an earlier responder - "great series ending ever,"
That was the brilliance of this ending. Shortly before this aired, an entire season of Dallas was revealed as a dream and fans of that show were rather pissed. This was a chance to poke fun; it was topical and it worked well as a joke ( a trick on the audience that was more suited to a sitcom than a drama). Suggesting that the entire show was a dream was also a big pat on the back for longtime fans of the original Bob Newhart Show. It closed a circle on Newhart's television career and tied up the ends quite nicely.
This Was Brilliant In Its Simplicity ! A Surprise Unequalled In Television, Film Or Theatre ! Just A Quiet Wow ! It Was Done Perfectly ! Accolades ! Accolades Not Needed, That's How Great It Was !
Haha this even topped Bobby coming out of the shower on Dallas lol This Finale is a gift to us fans of The Bob Newhart show! Suzanne Pleshette stole it lol!
And then there were these three woodsman...only one of them spoke...lol. Brilliant. It’s the only time that I can remember when Newhart made TV seem so real waking up from this surreal fable- like dream.
I remember watching this live. Once I saw the bedroom, I starting laughing. Seeing and hearing Suzanne's voice, made me smile with glee. The best ending to a series, Period.
This is the first time I have seen this in 20 years. This was a true surprise. Back in 1990 there were no spoliers, no leaks about this so if you saw on the air as I did youwere totally surprised. I bascially fell on the floor laughing when i first saw this finale. The final scene was totally worth it.
I don't remember where, but this did get leaked somewhere, at least as a possibility. I do remember the night this aired, and I was watching it with my boyfriend at that time and I didn't say anything because I didn't want to spoil the surprise for him. I also remember wondering if they were REALLY going to do it! I wasn't sure I trusted the source.
@@bdh70 Yeah that's gonna happen no matter what decade but the major difference is only a handful if that would even know about that leak unless it was in a major newspaper or magazine which it wasn't or else we wouldn't be here lol. I think the audience adds to the ending. It keeps the sitcom feel to the ending. Making us laugh and not cry like some sitcom endings have done in the past.
On the Breaking Bad blu ray boxed set they did a parody of this. Brian Cranston wakes up next to Jane Kaczmarek, his wife from Malcolm In the Middle, "I was cooking meth and I murdered people." "Hal, if you think you're getting out of taking the boys to school, you're crazy."

Pure genius. Whoever thought this up was way ahead of their time. Amazing.

Pure genius!
@@scottdowney4865 I think Ginny got it from Dallas Season Nine...the DREAM season.
I always loved the double laugh here. The first one from those who clearly recognized the set, and the second when they saw you-know-who turn on the lights.
Bob knew to make us laugh, and we knew HOW to laugh!
Hoping that we make it through what's going on today and be Americans united again.

@@kenherrera2819 I remember I did not get it at first. I thought it was Mary Frann still wearing her Japanese wig and my hubby so "NO it is his first wife;" lol! I was still confused, and he said "you know the other show where he was a phycologist." Then lol the light bulb went off for me. Emily!

A whole lot better than Seinfeld ending!
@@2000Majicman Every last ep is better than Seinfeld.

Greatest series finale of all time......hands down !! No contest. Sheer brilliance.
The idea came from newharts wife a few years earlier when they were talking about the funniest way to end the series. Best ever.
Yeah and nobody knew about it till it was shot.... They wanted to keep it on the down low.
There was a risk because then when you'd watch it in syndication, you'd remember that it all is a dream and it might spoil it for you. Looking back, I guess it was good since the series was so bizarre to begin with, it would be a dream for somebody, like Bob Hartley, a psychiatrist.
They were at a party and Suzanne was also attending. That’s how Jenny came up with the idea
What a wonderful show it was. Rest in Peace, Bob and Ginnie, and Peter and Tom and Suzanne... We miss you all. Thanks for the great, funny storytelling. 🥰 ☁️🕊️
Have such fond memories of watching Newhart as a kid. Thanks for the memories Bob! You will be missed.
I will always remember the line: "You know... you really should wear more sweaters." - forever.
Great ideas, writing and great timing made for a great series that younger kids will never understand.
This was the most brilliant ending of any series I have ever seen. True genius. I am still a huge fan of both of these classic shows.
Not one of the best finales, the best.
Michael Hesler I agree Micheal
Sopranos and Titanic were also good. Too bad all in the family had to go on and on and on and on....... It should have ending when Edith died
Don't forget the second best Six Feet Under
I concur!
Michael Hesler dont forget the worst. Mash
THE beat ending on any TV show EVER! Such a classy homage!
Rest in peace Bob
The best ending for a sitcom ever.
One of the best endings to a television show ever. A sheer classic. I would say that this one, the finale of MASH, and the finale of The Fugitive with David Janssen, are the three best series finales of all time. This was a sheer classic. RIP to Tom Poston, Mary Frann, and Suzanne Pleshette. One of the best television wives in TV history.
This was the best ending of a show ever!!!!
Newhart did it better than Dallas.
@@paulleckner8235 Light years better! And on a positive, hilarious note.😄
I know! But, what's the name of the music from the last newhart at the end at 10:23?
@@dahmaricloyd1858 That's the same song at the beginning and end of all the episodes just with some changes to the violins. I think its by Henry Mancini specifically made for the show.

I remember watching this when it aired with my dad, I was just a kid so I didn't really get the significance since I barely remembered the Bob Newhart Show, but once I got a little older I understood how monumental a moment this was in tv.
I genuinely doubt it will ever be topped in it's brilliance.
"Go to sleep, Emily. You know, you really should wear more sweaters." PRICELESS
I was a kid when this show was on and my mother absolutely loved Newhart. I remember watching the finale with my mother and always liked Larry, Darryl, and Darryl. This ended perfectly. Rest ever most peacefully, Bob.
Larry Daryl & Daryl in the elevator is what I remember 😂
Saw this the night it aired. LOVED IT! THE BEST ENDING TO A SERIES EVER!
+SingLoudandLong Me, too, and I completely agree.
Same here. I was like ten years old. Still love it!
Seconds before the Darryl"s yelled "quiet," I said to my siblings "wouldn't it be funny if they talked tonight?" It's funny how your memories play tricks on you;I could have sworn that Fran Drescher played Larry's wife.
Same here .
It was 12 noon on Sunday here. Remember it like it was yesterday
Simply the GOAT of sitcom endings.
The absolute best series finale bar none.
It was a genius move to end the series the way that they did. I loved it.
This is a really thought-out ending. Bravo to the creators, Bob Newhart, and so on. Bravo!
@7:25 BEST ending TWIST ever !! I am now 54 and remember both NEWHART shows !! This was pure classic !! * much after has been taking from this in TV & Movies !! CLASSIC ending !!
I'm so glad I was a sitcom nerd/fanatic from an early age.because I watched this live as a kid and was able to appreciate the brilliance of that ending. The Bob Newhart Show was before my time but I saw some of it in syndication and remember being being so pleasantly surprised when she turned the light on! It's still the best sitcom ending I think.
THE best ending in television history...

QUIET!!!!!!!!!!
Suzanne Pleshette was a FINE woman. Her beauty is timeless. May she Rest in Peace.
Saw her in a few of her earlier movies, and while she was pretty when she was younger, she got sexier as she got older.
She was on two episodes of Route 66,well worth the watch.
@@patrickmcgoldrick8234 Also on The Fugitive a couple of times, playing two different characters.
And Emily showed more affection to Bob in their one closing scene than Joanna had to Dick in the entire proceeding eight years of the show- even factoring being annoyed at Bob telling her his dream!
ahhh...when tv was tv....sure do mis the great days....thanks to all involved with bringing such joy to us all!
And that was Mary Tyler Moore’s cat in the logo.
“A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down the pants”. - Chuckles the Clown😂
4:12 - The two Darryls yelling "QUIET!"...the only word they ever said in the entire series! (That word was heard again on the MTM logo at the 10:29 mark!)
Yet, for some reason, they had trouble memorizing their lines.

Wow, great catch there! Had to rewatch it, but sure enough, she’s the black haired one in the middle. Funny!
@@chasbodaniels1744 oneof her first acting jobs
@@randallulrich No, it wasn't because of that. Tony and John could do lines. It was when they came on board the first time, the idea was to have these three brothers basically sharing the same brain and Larry, the leader, having most of it. Tony and John didn't mind not having lines, in fact, if the writers decided to have them talk, they'd tell them, "No, it's better this way." The idea was that they could talk if they wanted to, they just chose not to. This was a situation where they felt, "Okay, this is too much. We'll handle this instead of Larry."
I remember the first time I watched this when I was a kid. Darryl and Darryl finally speaking was one of the two best moments of this for me lol

"QUIET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
The best ending to a series ever. Will never be topped.
I don't normally go for those "it was all a dream" endings, but in THIS CASE ONLY........ it was totally brilliant, and I have to agree with an earlier responder - "great series ending ever,"
I think this ending was supposed to spoof the 'dream' endings used elsewhere. Brilliantly done.
The Dallas 'dream' episode inspired the Newhart finale.
I was going to say that, jmet
That's because it was lampooning several other then-recent series that used an awakening from a dream to undo an unfortunate change in the series.
Greatest series ending ever.
+Jeffrey Riley masterpiece that brings back happy feelings.
When Richard Kimble stopped running
We can only hope if General Hospital ends they do at least one thing fans want. This was perfect.
One of the greatest endings to a series in television history. Nobody saw it coming!
Watching this because now Bob Newhart has died. There's no turning back now.😓

This Finale is a gift to us fans of The Bob Newhart show! Suzanne Pleshette stole it lol!
@Edgehead10075 Disagree. I wanted Bobby back so badly I didn't care how they did it. The show wasn't the same without him.
The inside joke would have been lost on anyone who never watched The Bob Newhart Show.
@@dollydagger4306 So? Those few sad-sacks would've just been S.O.L.
It was wonderful to hear the two Darryls speak at last, totally blew me away. But then, the bedroom scene with Emily, BOOM!
@@bdh70 Yeah that's gonna happen no matter what decade but the major difference is only a handful if that would even know about that leak unless it was in a major newspaper or magazine which it wasn't or else we wouldn't be here lol. Today if they tried this it'd be all over social media, television, radio spots etc. there's no security anymore in this modern day apocalypse of non privacy.
@@genkatqltr8517 They only said one word and together, but it was cute. Might've been funny for Larry to start to speak but they stop him and then say the word.

RIP Bob thanks for the memories.
Yes I saw that! It was a hilarious homage. 👍😆
