Seriously - all he proved was that you could beat someone to death. We already have the history of boxing for that. The question was whether a potato was a viable weapon, which went completely unanswered. He focused so much on kinetic impactors that he missed not only that it's a melee weapon, and he has to include the arm's momentum - but also that the potato has to survive in order to be used more than once..
I think we forget the durability of potatoes. After a a few hits at that speed I would imagine it would eventually start to break and get weaker. Unless I missed that in the video, we should take that into consideration
This is exactly what I was thinking! Would it also depend on the temperature of the potato? As frozen potatoes are much harder than warm ones like the one dream had near a wall of lava lol
I wonder if lore-wise the potatoes were stale or at least not easily mashed, remember the prison has an automatic feeding system which periodically dispenses potatoes from a loaded dispenser, by the time of Tommy's death dream had been in there for months, those potatoes are probably pretty past date by then which might increase the spud's deadlines
Yeah, a lot of things could come into play for a simple explanation. At the least it’d have multiple scenarios- for example what you brought up. Then as someone else said, a cold or a hot potato?
Just a sidenote: The actual probability of death would be even higher than MatPat predicted because he computed the probability of death from repeated blows assuming that each blow is equally likely to be lethal. However, it's reasonable to assume that later blows are more likely to be lethal since earlier blows will already have done significant bodily harm. To compute an exact number would require knowing how much the probability changes, but we can say the overall probability will certainly be higher than if the blows were all independent.
@@syfj. Depends on how much stamina the attacker had I suppose. _Eventually_ the blows would get weaker due to the attacker tiring, but it's not necessarily the case that happens before the victim is already dead.
but he also didnt consider energy lost to deformation of the potato which makes a difference because that means less energy would be delivered per punch than calculated
@@slyq5046 Yeah, I guess there are a lot of variables to consider if we want to be super accurate. I don't really want consider the situation that deeply though, since, you know, it is about murdering someone.
I mean, you'd also have to take into account how the potato probably wouldn't survive that many hits and the fact that Dream undoubtedly hit Tommy in other less fragile areas, too, not just his head.
and, you have to think about how many potatoes he had. If one potato broke, he most likely had multiple others. And how many injuries Tommy's c! character has received, lot's of head trauma in the past. If I'm not mistaken, wouldn't that lead to being injured wayyy easier? So the chances of death could go up.
There are more fun things to take into account when calculating the lethality of a potato. How's the structural integrity of the potat? Is it frozen or not? Is the collision between potat and head elastic? And the mass of the arm throwing the potato punch will contribute with kinetic energy. And also you have to half the results in the energy calculations.
Also have to take into account point of impact and shape of the potato. Heck take a frozen potato and smack someone in the temple with it and I'd say they are more than likely down. And if frozen what's stopping someone from turning it into a very makeshift shiv?
Yeah, I was waiting for him to address how sturdy potatoes are. They seem like they're hard enough to last, but could still see it breaking. Felt like a pretty big oversight this time.
The math is off too. Assuming there is no deformation and loss of potato, you still have more than 81.79% probability of survival. He missed the half in the formula and presented inaccurate results.
If this is game theory, I would love to see the actual speed of a punch by measuring it by pixels and 1 minecraft block being equal to 1 meter then having pixels of the potato get compared to other items via placing it in an armor stand an measure it against a block then once we have the measurements and convert them into irl measurements with 1 minecraft block = 1 meter being the formula then having calculations of lethality on where he got hit because at times it looked like he got hit in the chess while at times dream jumped and probably hit his head, that's all I wanna see but probably not gonna happen
The real question is if this happened irl, would this still be possible compared to the durability of a raw potato? Wouldn't it be reduced to mush before the chances of death could occur?
Shouldn’t more than just the weight of the potato have of been token into consideration? What about the durability and squishiness? With this logic a wet sponge (therefore heavy)should be able to do the same
As many people said you should also take the potato's state into a count. Besides that there's also the surface area you're striking with. You will deal more damage if you land a punch with a sharper and smaller side of a potato, rather than a flat wide one. And also, in this scenario each hit will not have an equal probability of killing a person, since your overall health state will worsen after getting a strike, thus increasing your chance of dying with the next one.
Could be fun to see a theory, about if you could live in the long run, on a Minecraft diet. How long would you live if you started a new world. It takes time growing crops, but you also need to find the seeds first. Can't just live off of meat, without any sort of side effects.
not to mention that you can find berries and apples in the wild but those arent very nutritious for every single meal. And all the hard work you do in the early stages of a new minecraft world thus needing a ton of calories.
Not only that, but until villager breeders and mass traders have been set up, which is pretty late game, you pretty much just eat steak, then you transition to golden carrots
The kinetic energy calculation is part of this, but that’s not the final answer. You also have to take into account the “give” of the potato, and the face as well as the fact the persons head would move back. All of these lessen the force acted on the person. Think punching a concrete wall, vs a sandbag.
Also, the potato isn't being thrown, it's being used as a club. This means that just looking at the kinetic energy, the mass of the traveling object is even greater. Mass is spud + fist + arm for an overhead swing, and even greater for a punch - especially if the attacker uses their whole body to punch.
PLUS: we need take account for potato hardness - its not a sponge but still will absorb solid amount of kinetic energy. Second thing: its quite likely that you can smash raw potato with your single fist blow, not mention a boxer punch that is stronger anyway compare to ordinary person. There is no chance that potato would survive more than 5 blows with above measurements. So he was hit bu way less energy that not caused potato to break. Deform? sure, but not break into pieces.
A few things I'd take into consideration here: Dream had been in prison for I think two months at this point and the warden had taken to starving him. So he was bound to be a bit weaker. Then it's likely that the power in his punches would decrease as he got tired. And then there's that in Minecraft terms, Dream would have a lot of power cause he's good at pvp, so using like the power a boxer would have might not be too off. Then again, after taking into consideration his two months of prison and some starvation, maybe the average joe calculation might not be off.
Idk if he was actually starving him then in game he would lose health. Starving is literally a feature in game so anything short of it is just hungry at worst no matter wat the story line said. Plus dreams character was literally a liar and cheater so would it really surprise u if he lied about starving for sympathy? Also I’d point to Iroh as an example of people getting hooked in prison as the opposite here
But in all of those calculations Matpat forgot that this calculation is for one punch as ion real life second paunch is much more damaging then the first. You can imagine it as first paunch is weakening the head to blunt trauma (especially the brain) Of course he also forgot that potato would be damaged by being used as a weapon and that when you paunch you use portion of your body weight and at least he would have to add weight of the hand that is holding the potato and part of the arm weight.
Matpat you a couple of calculations. How about the "bouyancy" of the potato? A solid rock hurts way more than a soft potato even though they weigh the same. Also: A potato is not gonna last multiple hits at 20 m/s.
It's interesting because on the one hand, dream is one of the strongest fighters on the Dream SMP so he likely knows how to throw a punch. On the other hand, dream has been sitting in a cramped prison cell living on a diet of raw potatos for several months so he's likely alot weaker than usual and may even be malnourished. Still rather interesting that the potato likely would have killed Tommy, but I have to wonder if the potato would have broken first. All in all, killing Tommy, murder using potatos, I'd imagine this episode is Technoblade approved
I'd normally never watch a Dream SMP related video, but the fact that Gothi uses potatoes as a weapon in Fool's Gold (while she's a crazy old lady, that is) made it a necessity that I see this
@@5lkp4 Not exactly. As the Flaminglitten points out it just happens to be 20 times. But if say Tommy regenned a bit of health, Dream would have hit him again.
Exactly! If you consider how likely it is to die from being punched by a potato, Tommy actually got really lucky surviving as long as he did. Of course Dream would have kept punching him so it doesn't matter really how long it would take, unless of course you consider the potato being mashed in the process. In that case, however, Dream had multiple potatoes so theoretically he could have just grabbed another one and continued punching away.
Two things you forgot; 1) the potato's durability (it would break before you do). 2) the fact that the potato is not doing any damage in game, all that damage is coming from the fist holding the potato, dream would have killed him in exactly the same amount of hits without holding anything.
if you mean durability as in "if this were actually happening wouldn't the potato be smushed/otherwise ruined", its also important to note that Dream had more than one potato-- I'm not sure exactly how many but Dream gave Tommy at least 6 so we can assume he had plenty. Even if every single hit destroyed the potato, he'd have enough potatoes to just use a new one each time
MatPat my friend, you forgor to mention one detail: wouldn't the potato break? Or get damaged in another way? Wouldn't this be more fatal to the potato more than to the player?
One minor miscalculation, and I don’t know how much this would actually affect the final numbers, but shouldn’t we be using slaps as a metric instead of punches since a potato would be in the palm of someone’s hand? With how big slap fighting has gotten thanks to Penguin0 I feel like those numbers should be easy to come by.
I think you're forgetting the aspect of how strong a potato is, You can throw a potato at the ground And it will break into pieces. Not only that if you do that multiple times the Potato would be mushy or something like that.
I believe that since the potato has a sort of "glue" or shield, aka the hand, it might be able to actually stay together. Also, potatoes are actually quite strong. However, in the situation Tommy and Dream were in, that potato isn't staying together lol
Also, store bought potatoes can be pretty hard. I've dropped potatoes on multiple occasions and the majority of the time, fresh potatoes barely bruise. Most other fruits bruise if you look at them funny, but potatoes are out here tanking falls like nothin.
I'd be interested in a part 2 talking about whether or not the spud would actually remain whole through all 20 strikes if being used to strike someone with that much force. If it breaks up, or whatever, how many strikes in, etc and how that impacts probability of death. Likely need to take some liberties as not all spuds are as dense or built the same, but still would be interesting.
Just a side note in the equation for kinetic energy you need to half the mass so the first equation would 50 joules and the second gives you 26 joules of kinetic energy.
there's also the fact that the mass of the potato isn't the only thing being applied to the bashing. The mass of his arm would be too. Not to mention that the potato likely wouldn't stay solid for 20 consecutive strikes- Mat's sort of dropped the ball on calculating this one. This does however make me want to see a more Mythbusters approach, with a full on gel anatomy dummy being bludgeoned by some spud wielding MMA champs.
you also need to take into account that the debris from explosions may have the same force but it is not a potato and will also generally be sharper meaning that many of the fatalities from an explosions won't be one from a potato.
There is an error in the calculation of kinetic energy. In 9:20, you calculated KE as 0.8*(8.1)^2 ~= 52.49J and missed the half in the formula. The correct KE per hit should be 0.5*0.8*(8.1)^2 = 26.24J, which gives us less than 1% chance of lethality. This implies the probability of survival per hit is greater than 0.99, thus with 20 consecutive hits, the probability of survival is greater than 81.79%. I love these videos but I hope in the future that all calculations are proofread since this completely alters the conclusion made in the video.
a few little notes: tommy was revived using the “revive book” a plot device that’s been known about months before tommy’s death, and also, dream has no powers at all, the world bending stuff is said to be done by a godlike figure known as DreamXD, a seperate entity from dream
I can just imagine someone dying to a potato and you know what would have been funnier in the story, if Tommy’s character was Irish Also potato durability please
Definitely need to assess the potato's durability. If I can hit someone in the face 20 times with a potato and the potato isn't damaged, good luck on my teeth doing anything to it. I'm more of the opinion that it was a rock covered in a potato skin.
Wouldn't the potato break before his skull? We all know that it's possible to beat someone to death with your hands. What we're asking is would the potato absorb all the energy and break before inflicting actual damage.
Dream SMP of Food Theory? Thats the last thing i could have EVER expected. I mean MatPat seems to figure out how to make content out of EVERYTHING he sees!
Idea for a game theory episode (that I got while watching this episode 😆): should bullet bills arm be extended outward when he travels? Would his arms being at his sides entail he has more drag or some force that makes him be slow?
Fun fact: during the pacific campaign in ww2, Americans threw potatoes at the Japanese as a distraction, and the Japanese threw them back thinking they were disguised as bombs. It took place at sea
In one of the wars the brits disguised muffin/cupcakes as bombs I’m pretty sure, so makes sense the Japanese thought the Americans were doing that Edit: I just realised what I said implies that they made muffins that looked like bombs.. not bombs that looked like muffins 😂 sorry, I’m not British, I’m mainland European, but I’m going to keep my mistake haha

The leathality is somewhat still in question as a potato at that speed would probably turn to mush. Like is the average potato hard enough to both someone's skull in ?
@@phantomcat1958 My god. Your right, all these years technoblade has been teaching us of the potatoes yet I questioned the potatoe power. Forgive me potatoe lords
Using only the potatoes mass for this calculation kinda feels like calculating the piercing power of an arrow, but only counting the mass of the arrowhead
This is all assuming that the potato's material is strong enough as to not break when hit against a person repeatedly. After all, there's a difference between "death by potato" and "death by potato residue left on hand after potato broke apart". In addition, because the potato is not a brick and may be slightly malleable, the impact time of each potato punch will be longer thereby reducing lethality. But then again this was a very funny video and I enjoyed it a lot! I hope to see something similar in the future!

got excited because I thought we were going to get pixel measurements that would determine the speed the potato is being hit at! Would've been a cool first for Food Theory and a fun callback. Still loved this wacky and fun theory
i don’t know if it changes anything, but dream and tommy both had mining fatigue due to the security measures in the prison, which technically would make their punches significantly slower, right?
Without watching this, I can say, a raw tatter in a sock can drop someone with a well places hit. After a few hits you'll probably need to swap out the tatter for an unmashed one but yeah, it will hurt.
Great video! However, I see a few problems with the calculation. 1. The mass. You aren't hitting with only the potato, the kinetic energy needs to account for your arm as well, since you are moving your hand and stopping it on hit, thus making the "object" (potato + arm) heavier. 2. The speed. For anyone saying that Steve isn't a pro boxer, this was such a missed opportunity to calculate how fast minecraft's Steve swings :D. From something like duration and distance, you'd get the actual speed. You'd get an actual number and no one could say anything if you get the number from the actual game.
You forgot the fact that dream didn't hit tommy's head everytime. Also you could have calculated the true size of a minecraft potato based of pixels. Still a great video matpat
@@floatingf8783 late 2020 has Dream stream some speedruns with unusually high amounts of luck, for 6 streams. Calcs had the odds of having Dream's luck to be impossible(you are more likely to be hit by lightning multiple times in a row) hence the infamous cheating debate. Iirc, Dream lost the debate.
@@chestertamayo1894 He didn't exactly lose the debate, basically he said he 'accidentally cheated'. You can watch Karl Jobst's video about it for more information.
don't forget that your regular Steve can carry stacks of gold blocks, just being able to have one gold block in his hand would require some Herculean muscles to pull it off,in fact I'm more surprised the potato doesn't shatter when used as a weapon
I think you missed out on another crucial piece of information in finding out the answer. Assuming it's blunt-force trauma to the head, where on the head specifically? Because the back of the skull is a lot thinner, and therefore it is easier to succumb to blunt force there rather than the front, which drastically decreases chance of survival.
This is a great concept for a dsmp theory! our storyline is so volatile that it’s difficult for an outsider to make a theory for the future, but exploring the logistics of past events is something we love to do. Very funny retelling, it’s clear that you researched this very carefully.
@@Kevin-dt9xm I mean, sure, but we in that case are calculating the real scenario in comparison to the game. Reducing the frequency of hits and accounting for the fact that in minecraft canon mining fatigue would make you more tired, therefore weaker, the kinectic energy would be smaller than what the game shows you in the form of damage.
Mega Since mining fatigue doesn't actually make you deal less damage, you could also interpret it as making everything heavier, keeping kinetic energy constant while limiting speed and causing you to tire out faster
I’d say there’s also an argument for placement of the blow. I don’t know Minecraft, but on a normal human much more damage could be done with a blow to the temple than the front of the skull that you hit with a soccer ball.

Hi there! I’m a student studying for my bachelor’s in computer engineering and one of my siblings asked me to watch this video and give my opinion on it. It’s been a while since I’ve last seen a video from the Theorists. So it was nice to see you guys doing more math oriented videos again like the one about the price of a suit of diamond armor or the one on Chun Li’s helicopter kick. However, I noticed an error in the video that causes the final likelihood of death by potato far less likely than it actually is. For the video’s initial calculations for the potato’s kinetic energy from a pro and amateur boxer, the video had forgotten to divide the mass and velocity squared by two, instead using the incorrect equation KE = mv^2 instead of KE = (½)mv^2. The correct values for kinetic energy should be 49.96 joules and 26 joules for the professional boxer and the amateur boxer respectively. When plugging these values into the function for calculating the probability of fatality, the kinetic energy of the pro boxer has a probability of 10% and the amateur boxer has a probability of less than 1%. For the sake of argument, we can assume that it is 1%. This would mean that the chance of surviving a single potato punch would be 99% (100% - 1% = 99%). If we were to calculate the likelihood for surviving 20 potato punches in a row (using the equation y = 0.99^20), we would find the likelihood of survival to be over 81.79%, a fair bit larger than the 12% the video suggests. I would imagine if this mistake didn’t make it into the final cut of this video that its conclusion would call these potato punches far less deadly than anticipated. While still a fun video, I feel that this is a pretty bad mistake. I think this makes the whole video wrong. C’mon Matt. You’re better than this. But I believe that you can do better in the future. The fact that you’re teaching your audience useful math skills is always a good thing. I hope you keep up the good work!
He also forgot to factor in the durability of the potato. I'm sure if I smash a potato into someone's head enough times, that potato is likely to become a mashed potato before that skull caves in. (Then again I could be wrong, I didn't research into it... because that's what MatPat is supposed to do.) Also, great math there. You're the reason I read the comment section. :)
Hey Food Theory! A year ago you did a couple videos on Wall-E, with him being Satain and Canabalists. At the end of Wall-E, the people land back on Earth, and the movie ends by the people planting a sapling. I dont think a single sapling can feed a whole population, and the people are oblivious that they were eating other people, so my question is this: Would the people in Wall-E be able to find some sort of food in all the garbage, or would they stick to canabalism? And if they do find something to eat, what would it be and how long might it last, or if it would be bad to eat a bag of potato chips 666 years past the expiration date?
These are my thoughts too! Would it also depend on the temperature of the potato? As frozen potatoes are much harder than warm ones like the one dream had near a wall of lava lol
Protagonist and main character are actually very different in literature. Protagonist is the one who drives the plot forward, Main character is who the story is about. Neither have to be the hero. Everyone is the main character, but due to Tommy being the target of dream and the person who essentially drives the plot forward, Tommy is the closest thing the smp has to the protagonist. Sorry, but as a writer, people saying this really, really, annoys me
Idea for a food theory episode: Some theory revolving around making people trip on banana peels or making vehicles spin out of control on them... How possible is it? Could you make a vehicle spin out given enough banana peels?
Ooh, and for that matter, would the age of the banana peel make a difference? Like would peels left to oxidize for longer or from older bananas be slipperier, and would it thus take less old peels than young peels?
Okay, I know you said c!Dream's not a boxer , but c!Dream is a warrior, a strong leader (in the beginning of the series, anyway) and whenever he battles, it's with a sword. In fact, he's one of the best fighters on the server! Most often, we see him using a netherite sword. The crafting recipe for a netherite ingot is 4 netherite scraps and 4 gold ingots. A block of gold would weigh 19.3Mg (megagrams), so the total gold portion of the ingot would be 8.578Mg. As for the ancient debris, my headcanon is that it is the worn-out pieces of portal frames buried beneath the ground, hence why it's blast resistant and requires a diamond pickaxe to break. If that is true, then a piece of ancient debris would weight 2.55Mg. (2.55 × 4) + 8.578 = 18.778Mg, or 41398.4036 pounds, that being the mass of 1 netherite ingot. And to make the netherite sword, it's a diamond sword being upgraded with 1 netherite ingot. Now, I tried looking up how much a diamond sword would weigh, but I found nothing, so I calcuted the following on my own. A minecraft sword is, in theory, 3.25 feet long, or 990.6 milimeters. The width would probably be about 10 inches, or 254 milimeters. For simplicity's sake, we'll say that its thickness is about 1 inch. This brings the diamond sword to be about 2667.091 carats, or 1.8 pounds. Add those two together, and you have a sword that weighs approximately 41400.2036 pounds!!! Meaning Dream is getting a real work out swinging a sword like that around! Considering that, the potato would be mush within one hit and Tommy would have been dead within one hit as well, realistically, so Tommy himself must be pretty tough. (Note to add, I was mostly guessing the diamond sword size, but I think I was pretty close when you consider one minecraft block is 1 meter x 1 meter x 1 meter, making the guessing of a diamond sword's sizes rather easier than I originally thought, but I'm too lazy to actually check. This is just a general guess. I know I'm right about the netherite's weight. The weight of the diamond sword doesn't really make that much of a difference, anyways. Lol)

He missed the half in the formula and presented inaccurate results.
to be fair dream had quite a few potatoes, so he could’ve been hitting him, dropping the smashed potato, then grabbing a fresh one
Cool
So I get to beat someone to death, AND get mashed potatoes? Sign me up!
5:53 remember MatPat, this is a game where anyone can punch down a tree with their bare hands.

Shouldn’t more than just the weight of the potato have of been token into consideration? What about the durability and squishiness? With this logic a wet sponge (therefore heavy)should be able to do the same
My thought was (in addition to the numbers seeming way off) a potato would deteriorate and no longer be a viable weapon after a handful of strikes.
This is my issue as well. We need a follow up!
i thought the same because some potatoes are easy to crumble
You really thought you did something there didn't you I got one word for you: Holes
A sponge moving as fast as throwing a punch will send the water spewing and even when you hit you're just gonna squish the water out
As many people said you should also take the potato's state into a count.
YES
Or raw food, which I usually find myself eating when I've adventured too far.
this is a good idea i hope he sees this!!!!!!
not to mention that you can find berries and apples in the wild but those arent very nutritious for every single meal.
Think punching a concrete wall, vs a sandbag.
when he was calculating the kinetic energy, I think that he also forgot to multiply by 1/2
Also, the potato isn't being thrown, it's being used as a club.
Also how much energy the potato is absorbing and how much the potato can take before getting obliterated.
Man this episode was a mess 😅
A few things I'd take into consideration here: Dream had been in prison for I think two months at this point and the warden had taken to starving him. So he was bound to be a bit weaker. Then it's likely that the power in his punches would decrease as he got tired. And then there's that in Minecraft terms, Dream would have a lot of power cause he's good at pvp, so using like the power a boxer would have might not be too off. Then again, after taking into consideration his two months of prison and some starvation, maybe the average joe calculation might not be off.
he got crits too so 2hp each time Tommy got hit
Idk if he was actually starving him then in game he would lose health. Starving is literally a feature in game so anything short of it is just hungry at worst no matter wat the story line said. Plus dreams character was literally a liar and cheater so would it really surprise u if he lied about starving for sympathy? Also I’d point to Iroh as an example of people getting hooked in prison as the opposite here
Also, we know that the ‘average’ Steve can punch down a tree with his bare fists without even trying and at any health
But in all of those calculations Matpat forgot that this calculation is for one punch as ion real life second paunch is much more damaging then the first. You can imagine it as first paunch is weakening the head to blunt trauma (especially the brain)
Of course he also forgot that potato would be damaged by being used as a weapon and that when you paunch you use portion of your body weight and at least he would have to add weight of the hand that is holding the potato and part of the arm weight.
mid smp
Matpat you a couple of calculations. How about the "bouyancy" of the potato? A solid rock hurts way more than a soft potato even though they weigh the same.
Also: A potato is not gonna last multiple hits at 20 m/s.

One of the most shocking/intense moments in more recent DreamSMP history and Matpat’s over here like “but can I do it irl tho”
He would have approved
I'd normally never watch a Dream SMP related video, but the fact that Gothi uses potatoes as a weapon in Fool's Gold (while she's a crazy old lady, that is) made it a necessity that I see this
Also, Dream isn’t just punching Tommy 20 times; Dream is punching Tommy until he was dead
Same thing?
which...just so happens to be 20 times
@@5lkp4 Not exactly. As the Flaminglitten points out it just happens to be 20 times. But if say Tommy regenned a bit of health, Dream would have hit him again.
@@djsyntic ok :)
Two things you forgot;
1) the potato's durability (it would break before you do).
2) the fact that the potato is not doing any damage in game, all that damage is coming from the fist holding the potato, dream would have killed him in exactly the same amount of hits without holding anything.
Dream would do the same tiny damage holding anything not a tool or weapon, even a stick would be the same. This theory is still fun tho
if you mean durability as in "if this were actually happening wouldn't the potato be smushed/otherwise ruined", its also important to note that Dream had more than one potato-- I'm not sure exactly how many but Dream gave Tommy at least 6 so we can assume he had plenty. Even if every single hit destroyed the potato, he'd have enough potatoes to just use a new one each time
Yeah, I think it’s kinda ridiculous MatPat didn’t even take into account the mass of the arm. Seems like a glaring error

One minor miscalculation, and I don’t know how much this would actually affect the final numbers, but shouldn’t we be using slaps as a metric instead of punches since a potato would be in the palm of someone’s hand? I think you're forgetting the aspect of how strong a potato is, You can throw a potato at the ground And it will break into pieces. Not only that if you do that multiple times the Potato would be mushy or something like that.
I believe that since the potato has a sort of "glue" or shield, aka the hand, it might be able to actually stay together. Also, potatoes are actually quite strong. However, in the situation Tommy and Dream were in, that potato isn't staying together lol
Also Dream did have multiple potatoes so he could have just rearmed himself if his potatoe weapon broke.
Also, store bought potatoes can be pretty hard.
I've dropped potatoes on multiple occasions and the majority of the time, fresh potatoes barely bruise. Most other fruits bruise if you look at them funny, but potatoes are out here tanking falls like nothin.
I'd imagine that the potato was super duper hard from being in that prison for months
ive been kncoked out before by a potato trust me they dont just break that easily
Yeah was bout to say that
there's also the fact that the mass of the potato isn't the only thing being applied to the bashing.

8:15 Yes but those powers come from the revive book, he wasn't born with them and his necromancy doesn't increase his strength.

ya the regular Jo in Minceraft can hold more than 100 universes!!
Thank you so much, I desperately needed to know what defines a “small potato”
talking about speed, did Matpat forget that Dream had Mining Fatigue which decreases a players attack speed by 30%
well it decreases the frequency of punches by 30%, but because it doesnt reduce damage it doesnt affect how hard of a punch hes delivering.
Mega
Since mining fatigue doesn't actually make you deal less damage, you could also interpret it as making everything heavier, keeping kinetic energy constant while limiting speed and causing you to tire out faster

2:30 Tommy is just as confused as the rest of us
(Then again I could be wrong, I didn't research into it... because that's what MatPat is supposed to do.)
Also, great math there.
This is the reason why dream wears a mask with a smile, it is to mask the guilt because of the fact that he killed a man with a singular potato.
Yes
0:41 but I just watched that one and it said when I finished to come watch this one. I see what you did Mat Pat now I’m stuck in an endless loop
But would the spud itself necessarily survive the repeated smacking intact and not just break after one or two strikes?
These are my thoughts too! Would it also depend on the temperature of the potato? As frozen potatoes are much harder than warm ones like the one dream had near a wall of lava lol
I mean potatoes are pretty solid
spuds are super volatile, man. They can be cooked in any way. Fried, baked, murder, deep fried
Imagine he invites dream to his house then immediately beats him with a potato

Just to clarify, tommy isn’t the protagonist, protagonist means main character, in the dream smp, everyone is the main character
MatPat is a brain burner!(Правдивое видео🇷🇺):...

So he is a protagonist then?
Protagonist and main character are actually very different in literature. Protagonist is the one who drives the plot forward, Main character is who the story is about. Neither have to be the hero. Everyone is the main character, but due to Tommy being the target of dream and the person who essentially drives the plot forward, Tommy is the closest thing the smp has to the protagonist. Sorry, but as a writer, people saying this really, really, annoys me
Protagonist doesn’t necessarily mean main character
@@deltashard7980 By this logic wouldn't the protagonist be...
scheduling conflicts?
1:43 Oohhhhhhhh so thats what smp means, i was wondering about that
after thorough tests (beating a mannequin with a potato) The potato itself tends to break and squash after each hit deceasing its effectivity.
The O'Doyle theory.
2:36 who's gonna tell him it's ranboo? ..
Don't worry, Techno will tell him.
Don’t worry, Philza will tell him.

Lol)
