Honestly I think that Starlight is one of the best Coca Cola flavors to date, it has a birthday cake ice cream taste and it makes me feel like a child again.
The first time I tasted the starlight coke, my first thought was "This taste like the idea that all the stars in the night sky are already dead, but without the associated fear." It was later explained to me that it is supposed to taste like cotton candy. I also agree with this.
I tried it the other day, and my mom described it perfectly: It basically tastes like when you rush over to the soda machine at McDonald's and run your cup through all the soda flavors at once to make one giga drink.
That is actually exactly what it tasted like now that you’re saying it coming from someone who has made that “gigs drink” concoction it does seem somewhat similar
I mix sodas at soda fountains and my sister thinks that's gross. That explains how I could like starlight for its odd flavor but my sister thought it was disgusting

@@MyLifePixeledyea maybe like a rum flavored s'mores but with some sweetness like razberry Wich components plus more foods chemical compound in a space dust cloud that gives it it's flavor, but the coke commercial is trying to go with I guess a camp fire space vibe so really cold tasting with toasty s'mores, with some rum and coke on the side. I recently encountered this "Starlight" flavoured coke up here in Canada, and I bought a bottle. I rather liked it, and bought a second one the following day. The way I've tried to describe it is if coke decided to make a creme soda.
This soda somehow became my favorite. I never tasted anything earthy? I just came up with it being a wild cherry-vanilla soda with a fun touch of mint. I think the coldness is what makes it space tasting
MATT! I’d love to see a Food Theory episode on expiration dates! Are they real? Or are they just a ploy to get us to throw away perfectly good food and buy more? How long AFTER an expiration date is something still safe, etc.

As someone who watched mlp (still kinda do) I'm sad mat missed the opportunity to use starlight glimmer at 3:40 but used twilight instead. Loved the video still, always love watching this kind of videos
This video got me to try Coke Starlight, and I actually quite like it. I think it tastes a bit different for different people, though, because I didn't get any of the bitter, earthy, or minty notes, just the subtle cotton candy taste and the cold finish.
Having tried it myself, knowing people who've tasted it, and having read a few articles, I've seen one general consensus on Coke Starlight: It tastes like you mixed a couple pops at a pop machine. I think the one I've seen that best reflects it is Coke plus Dr Pepper, which does summarize it fairly well. I've also had someone say that it tastes like it has the slightest hint of marshmallow, which I can taste as well. I wouldn't say it tastes bad though, it just tastes odd, without any specifically defined taste. I don't really think it tastes like what space would taste like, I think it tastes like that way space looks.
From descriptions, I can't tell if I would like it or not. I really like Vanilla Pepsi Zero, with Vanilla Coke Zero as a close second... but I'm really not a fan of Dr. Pepper at all. So ... probably worth trying once, I guess, but it sounds like I shouldn't expect much.
I love the lady at the end who so sweetly said "Space taste gross." She said it so matter of fact but as if it were still almost a compliment she really cracked me up :) [everyone else was great for being our virtual guinea pigs as well, thanks Team MattPat!]
Hey Mat! Big fan here! Was on a roadtrip and found another coke creation, that claimed to taste like dreams, called “dreamworld” As soon as I bought this, I immediately thought of this episode. Basically, I’m proposing a video idea of you guys talking about this dream soda in the same way that you talked about starlight! (I can’t say I can describe the flavor right now, but when I wafted the smell, it smelled like orange tic-tacs lmao)
Regardless of the “space” branding I think the flavor tastes pretty good. I have’t tried the normal version but the zero sugar one surprised me with how much I enjoyed it.
You just gave me a massive nostalgia hit. I live in Seattle, and in a town called Greenwood, where I used to live, there used to be a store dedicated to all that weird astronaut stuff. My family is broke, so all I ever got from there was this weird squeezy alien toy that was, like, 75 cents, but I distinctly remember some things that were in the thousands of dollars. My dad loved to go there for camping food, too
dude I love how much you put into this video you should do the Coca-Cola dream world one looking at the lake I was expecting cotton candy but after tasting it was EXTREMELY disappointed as it was just a mango taste I'd love to hear the reviews of this one!!
I personally love the Starlight flavor & that the flavor profile(s) seem to change with each sip. I will say one thing though....It definitely tastes much better cold than room temp.
Personally I think it tastes like bottle caps, like when you take just a handful of them and lol em in your mouth, but like you said it tastes different every time.
When I heard about the space soda and went to try it, I actually thought about it before tasting it. Considering all the other things floating in space is mostly rock(planets, asteroids, moons) and gas, I kind of anticipated the drink to taste kind of rocky. And it surprisingly did.
For the record, I would absolutely buy “mat pat’s seething rage” flavour Coca-Cola, once. If Coca Cola wants my money multiple times, we’ll, they better start making a Quantum or a Victory flavour.
Fun fact: I work at a grocery store who sells starlight, and when looking at the ingredients compared to normal coke, the only difference is the incorporation of fruit juice!
They don't have to list every ingredient so it's very possible the major changes are hidden. But yeah this is obviously a coke base with a weird flavor profile so not too surprising
I tried it when it came out and knew about the raspberry / rum "taste" of space. With that in mind, I could possibly taste a hint of rum but definitely no raspberry. Sweet, cotton candy was for sure what I tasted. It has that artificial berry / vanilla taste you would associate with cotton candy, but I wouldn't say it was raspberry. It wasn't bad if you want a sweet drink. If you like vanilla coke you would probably like this.
Fruitopia Cherry Vanilla Groove mixed with Coke, fruitopia was a coca cola brand its not unheard of for a company to drudge up an old flavor and rebrand it
I genuinely love the space soda, when I first tasted it I definitely got the vanilla, but also cherry. I thought it was a mix of all the flavors. It’s so good but also bad
I got kind of a vanilla/raspberry/earthy/cookie profile when I tried it. I'm a fan. My dad, on the other hand, is not. Of course, then again, either it alone or in conjunction with something else he ate gave him bad indigestion, so, that's understandable.
coke: "the feeling of being by a campfire stargazing" Matpat: "THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT IT TASE LIKE ASH AND BUGS" evrey normal person: it tastes like gram crackers (kinda like what you would be expecting with the feeling of camping and siting around the campfire)
Yeah, I tried the zero sugar version of this, and then I had to try it a couple more times because I really wasn't sure what to make of it. Each sip tastes different - there was vanilla, and something fruity, never got a sense of anything earthy, and I don't drink alcohol so I wouldn't know it if I tasted that in there; I would actually try to figure out how to articulate the taste in my head while driving down the highway, just parsing out my thoughts as I drove, and could never really put it into words…but it's not bad. I don't LOVE it, but it's…something. Try it once, basically. Interesting conclusion about the molecule that led to the taste, though!

I tried this, and as a Brazilian, this tastes exactly like tutti-frutti! This is a very traditional sweet's flavoring in Brazil. We have a similar drink called Guaraná Jesus that Coke owns, but it is waaaaaaaay stronger than the space flavor
We have the flavor in some old fashioned candy here in America. It does taste pretty similar to be honest. I got cotton candy and cinnamon flavors more than anything.
I still remember seeing a thing that said one of the chemicals found in space was ethyl formate which is what gives raspberries their taste. Therefore space tastes like raspberries. That stuck with me as I thought it was kind of romantic that space tasted like raspberries. I'm still holding to that because my illusion hasn't been shattered by whatever the end of the video says. I just want my romantic notions entered into evidence while I still have them.
My first taste of this, it tasted like Christmas. Growing up we had a box of Christmas tree decorations and tinsel and it had a particular pine smell to it that apparently stuck with me into adulthood and I just didn’t know it. When I took my first drink of this it reminded me of Christmas when I was a kid. 😂. Who knew memories could have a flavor.
It's interesting that you said it has a "personalized" flavor of sorts. I'm seeing multiple people on your team liken it to mouthwash, but I personally got none of that when I tried it. I was more of a vanilla coke flavor to me.
Here's a flavor description that I'm not seeing many people talk about: To me, Starlight tastes just like taro flavored Boba milk tea. If you've never had Taro flavored Boba milk tea, I highly recommend trying it, and seeing for yourself if you agree with the comparison.
I've only had taro as a desert once it was a bread thingy with taro paste. In my culture we call taro root Malanga and we eat it more so as a food item in soups and stews, I love it in a nice Bacalao Guisao
I actually tried it a couple weeks ago and it was a really trippy first couple sips and then I realized it smelled like Coke and graham crackers and then it tasted like coke, vanilla, marshmallow, and graham crackers. Which I am all about. I thoroughly enjoyed it and wish to obtain more.
I tried Coke Starlight when it released, and honestly I'm kind of upset that it's gone. I really loved how much of a berry taste there was, and the zero sugar version was even better since there wasn't all the sugar in the way of the real flavor. I just wish that the flavor would return rather than being left in the past since me and almost every one of my friends absolutely loved the drink.
I guess everyone's taste buds are different. When I first tried it, I tasted the Raspberries and Rum taste. It doesn't taste like Cotton Candy, that's way too sweet. And not Diet because I hate the taste of Diet (Sorry Mat) I think that if people didn't like drinking it as is, it would be a great mixer for rum.
Fun fact: One time Coke tweeted something along the lines of “Who wants to be our best friend” or something like that. My English teacher replied and thought nothing of it A few weeks later, she got a $50 gift card for Coca Cola. Just a little story I decided to share with the world.
The best thing about this is that Matt drank from a glass, while none of the other crew used such glasses, because Matt knows that glass gives you the original taste and other containers don't.
@@macudude The reason why coke tastes different in Cans and Plastic bottles is that they change the taste accordingly, whereas glass gives you the original taste. And matpat knows this.
That's not how it works. This is true for coke contained in a glass bottle. Transferring coke from a plastic bottle or a can, into a glass, won't give you "the original taste".

Genuinely I'm a fan of it. The tiny cans are great because it's a nice drink to sip at, not to drink a large amount of. The main flavor is the coke but the aftertaste of cotton candy is very different. It does have a cooling sensation similar to mint but no minty flavor. I like it!
I thought they went with 'Starlight' to hint at it being Starburst candy flavored without infringing on copyright. I get a strong cherry Starburst taste.
Well considering all of the rocks and debris floating around space, it might not taste the best and with all of the chemical and atomic particles that make up different bodies in space, it really wouldn’t be the best to drink. Though it all depends on what aspect(s) of space you’re focusing on. Really interest episode!

Like if you go in a public park and point at literally NOTHING people will agree that they “also” see that snake or person or whatever. It’s just crowd pareidolia…
Agreed It’s like the one thing he missed in the video it feels like Missed opportunity since he talked so much about companies marketing moves and could have brought it up
To be fair candy companies used to do this, like airheads I believe came out with a mystery flavor and if you guessed what the flavor was correctly you’d be entered into a drawing to win some sweepstakes with all the other correct guessers. I remember being a kid around the time this happened and various classmates all talking about what they thought the mystery flavor was all with different guesses.
It would be interesting to explore the psychological (neurological?) aspect of how your brain is always trying to predict the future and make sense of stuff and how it applies to the user experience of this drink. I've had the caramel coffee coke before trying starlight. The memory of what that tastes like combined with the sweet and earthy notes you described, made my brain think someone combined caramel coffee coke with cherry vanilla coke.
Gotta give it to Coke, this has got to be one of the best marketing campaigns I've ever seen. They give you 0 info and an abstract description that just makes you go, "...wHAT" and decide you just have to try it for yourself. Plus no one else can really pin down the flavour, so you still can't figure out what it tastes like. It sells itself. Genius.
Well, this episode seems like a great warm-up for MatPat before he tries figuring out what all those Gatorade Frost flavors are supposed to be. [Fingers crossed]
Coca Cola starlight is one of my favorite flavors, I can't really explain why I like it so much. Also I love how the name is extremely Fallout sounding. like, Nuka Cola Starlight just sounds so right.
After watching this I whent out and bought a bottle to try. And it was bizarre. I thought it just tasted vaugly sweet at first, then after a few sips I got the impression I was drinking an RC cola. I wanted so see what would happen if I added some alcohol so I mixed the majority of the bottle with some whiskey... the flavor of the soda completely masked the whiskey, I couldn't tell the difference other then a slight burn from the alcohol. Overall it wasent bad, but for my money I would rather have regular coke.
I personally really enjoy the soda, but I didn't taste any earthiness or cinnamon. It's a flavor that's impossible to describe. I like the cooling sensation, feels very refreshing. I also really like the smell. I recommend it personally!
I tried the bottle version of the starlight coke and I poured a glass for my mom and older sibling both had different responses. My mom said it has a cotton candy taste and my older sibling mentioned the more cinnamon flavor. I read the label and it mentioned fruit and vegetable flavor or something like that. And when it was in a glass we used a bit of light to see a change in color. My taste buds give me a bit of bitterness and slight taste of fruits. I also found the drink to be multi colored. And me and my older sibling wonder what would make it appear to change color? Or are we the only ones who see this and we are overthinking it or we are possibly a bit crazy.
Fluid volume and opacity change how light travels through said fluid. So depending on how full your glasses are depends on how much light gets through which can make it look different shades of the same color. Best I can think of to cause different colors.
So the first time I tried starlight was a the diet version, since my mom bought herself some and I’m not really a coke person, but it was really interesting to try. My first sip tasted like vanilla (never had coke vanilla so I don’t know how similar they are in taste profile) but during my second sip I just got hit with a Cotten candy flavor, I for one enjoyed the random change in flavor. I tried it again this time normal not a diet version, and honestly didn’t taste that different between the two bottles, but I never got a dirt/cinnamon flavor during either experience. All in all I would drink it again if I saw it on the shelves in a store.
It tastes like a combo of cherry and vanilla coke to me. Maybe a bit sweeter. I'll have to let the rest of this bottle warm up to see if the coldness is from the temp or actual mintyness
I had one bottle of this a few weeks ago and honestly the flavor that came to mind was "Cherry, but not exactly". And I absolutely would recommend it. I, however, haven't had the opportunity to buy it sine that first test bottle. ... But if they think it tastes like mouthwash I'm not surprised they don't recommend it. I am surprised by the wide range of reactions.
It makes me think how some people love cilantro but some people think it tastes like soap. I think that's what we're seeing here with the two totally different ends of the spectrum regarding the enjoyability of this drink.
We started carrying some bottles in our store a month or two back, so I ended up trying some. Ultimately decided it tasted like some combination of "some sort of berry, leaning towards raspberry", mint, a hint of vanilla, and an aftertaste of cotton candy... Bizarre, but decent enough I'll probably buy it again.
08:46 "It comes in stages!" Just like the space rockets did! Except this trip takes you to through the stages of grief at having bought such a bad product.
I am glad someone tried to explain what this flavor is; I have been addicted to Starlight since it's launch. I cannot describe the flavor, but I like it.
Here in Canada, a little while back, Coke released a special edition flaviour called British Columbia Raspberry . The Starlight Coke tasted pretty much like it. Now I don't fully know if the Raspberry coke influenced my taste reception of the Starlight Coke but it's very much possible since my mind immediately went to raspberry coke when I took my first sip of Starlight.
I like that Coca cola actually put this much thought into it. I was fully expecting just the smore thing or it's just regular coke with a pretty label. So cool! Not saying it's perfect but they actually did research and used the only thing we know as a flavor of space itself
Its soo crazy, when I first saw the drink and tried it I kept getting a rasberry and vanilla flavor while others didnt. So that does explain why not everyone gets the same flavor experience. I actually really like it and with ice it gives off a more subtle mixed berry flavor for my taste.
I also thought raspberry and vanilla. I could see the vanilla maybe being marshmallow instead. I also liked it, which says a lot because I don't like regular coke that much.
I love that this product exists, and I love even more that you've ALREADY jumped on it to do a video about it. Now for an update video on Lily's Garden, because now there's a baby and she's homeless?
I came here again because I had the new Intergalactic european version twice already. I was pretty pumped up and I finally found 2 cans in a local shop. It's like having yogurt with biscuits with a slight fruity aftertaste and some mild mint at the end. I really like it and I want this to be here to stay. Way better than the normal one, although it's very strange.
Here is a question, when taste testing soda, doesn't bottled, canned or dispensed version taste have some difference? I prefer coke original taste (less sugar is the only one sold in recent years though so there has been a change there as well in all three where i live). And i notice a difference when comparing to canned version. It tends to be 'sharper' both in carbonation and taste. While the dispensed ones have more carbonation but less taste to me. If I'm not alone in this, wouldn't the difference in taste be affected by some taste testing with cans instrad of all trying bottled versions?
i 100% agree with you with them tasting different! i think it could have been affected by some drinking cans and others the bottled versions. i dunno though cause i haven't tasted the can version myself 🤷
Yeah this is kinda how it is with all drinks, if a liquid sits in a container for long enough the container starts to be added to the taste. So if you want your soda to taste like it just came from a can but dont want to pay extra just get some metal cups and it will likely be pretty similar.
Yeah, it's actually something Matt noted in his diet cola episode, that there was a marked difference between canned/bottled and fountain dispenser soda. I will say, I've tried the Starlight coke, both normal and diet, and canned and bottled, and... It's all just... Not great. Bottled tasted a little like cotton candy when first opened, but when the aftertaste kicked in, and canned from the start, it just tasted like... Well, to me, like flat and watered down coke with a layer of dust, honestly.
Ya know, I tried this and it taste like a combination of cotton candy, smores and a berry. Not sure what kind but like chocolate and berries. Its definitely an experience that you have to taste to understand. I quite enjoyed it.

I got it as well, and my friend and I just got 2 packs for ourselfs. It's really not that bad
i get like slightly fruity and the vanilla
bruh to me it taste flat
Same, to me it’s a mix of the cotton candy and raspberries, but I don’t remember a dirt taste. I try to buy it whenever I see it now
Having tried it myself, knowing people who've tasted it, and having read a few articles, I've seen one general consensus on Coke Starlight: It tastes like you mixed a couple pops at a pop machine.
Tastes like a modified Coke vanilla to me
From descriptions, I can't tell if I would like it or not. I really like Vanilla Pepsi Zero, with Vanilla Coke Zero as a close second... but I'm really not a fan of Dr. Pepper at all. So ... probably worth trying once, I guess, but it sounds like I shouldn't expect much.
I 100% agree with how you described it
I get a buttery caramel with a little bit of raspberry, but a cooling effect? Nope. It's not great but it's not bad either, middle ground level.
Am i the only one who thought the after taste was like skittles
I love the lady at the end who so sweetly said "Space taste gross." She said it so matter of fact but as if it were still almost a compliment she really cracked me up :) [everyone else was great for being our virtual guinea pigs as well, thanks Team MattPat!]
Hey Mat! Big fan here!
Was on a roadtrip and found another coke creation, that claimed to taste like dreams, called “dreamworld”
As soon as I bought this, I immediately thought of this episode. Basically, I’m proposing a video idea of you guys talking about this dream soda in the same way that you talked about starlight! (I can’t say I can describe the flavor right now, but when I wafted the smell, it smelled like orange tic-tacs lmao)

They don't have to list every ingredient so it's very possible the major changes are hidden. But yeah this is obviously a coke base with a weird flavor profile so not too surprising
Sounds like the “OK” cola cola that failed miserably (but has a cult following to this day making their own ok out of other stuff)

I got kind of a vanilla/raspberry/earthy/cookie profile when I tried it. I'm a fan. My dad, on the other hand, is not. Of course, then again, either it alone or in conjunction with something else he ate gave him bad indigestion, so, that's understandable.

Space doesn’t just taste like raspberries tho. There’s so many different chemicals in space that it has a little bit of every flavor in existence
I think it’s nebulae that taste like raspberry to be specific
The drink certainly tastes like raspberries
There's also a galaxy that smells and tastes like beer
Parts of space have compounds that create the taste in:
Raspberries
S'mores

It's interesting that you said it has a "personalized" flavor of sorts. I'm seeing multiple people on your team liken it to mouthwash, but I personally got none of that when I tried it. I was more of a vanilla coke flavor to me.

I tried Coke Starlight when it released, and honestly I'm kind of upset that it's gone. Riskyy nice try
Bots are terrible
Fluid volume and opacity change how light travels through said fluid. So depending on how full your glasses are depends on how much light gets through which can make it look different shades of the same color. Best I can think of to cause different colors.
A fuller glass would look darker etc. The shape of the glass can even have something to do with it.
I think it tasted like fruit, I really enjoyed it but it's like Cherry coke with a special aftertaste.
i thought it tasted like normal coke and than had the after tast of astronought ice cream

I don't know about coke, but it sorta happens with ice tea. The tastes are noticibly different, even from the same brand.
i 100% agree with you with them tasting different! i think it could have been affected by some drinking cans and others the bottled versions. i dunno though cause i haven't tasted the can version myself 🤷
Yeah this is kinda how it is with all drinks, if a liquid sits in a container for long enough the container starts to be added to the taste. So if you want your soda to taste like it just came from a can but dont want to pay extra just get some metal cups and it will likely be pretty similar.
@@hailymuller9050 You must not have taste buds than because its "100%" how it works..

Take care everyone and stay safe out there.
Since it’s Food Theory I want to see a theory on whether it’s better to use a spoon, fork or the alternative spork
Mushy items
Stirring things
Scooping
Picking things up
Better for your mouth
Etc
I think it’ll be pretty interesting to be honest.

I had this drink once. Wasn't that bad. Tasted like normal coke with a hint of marshmallows.
I 100% agree
Very much toasted marshmallow flavor
Bro this stuff is actually the goat
From the intro alone I realized the taste might be more “down to earth” than it sold itself to be
your very right matpat you can NOT LOSE TO THAT 1:20
I’ve tried it, and all I can say is I love the flavour, it tastes sweet and kind of marshmallow-ey, but at the same time it’s a subtle flavour, at least for me. I’ll miss it when it’s gone.. but not that much
Mine sort of tasted like Graham crackers, caramel, and a nice cooling hint of mint. It honestly panned out pretty well.
Future Museums: -and this is the Coke Starlight, the beverage that boggled minds with its space-y taste. . .
