Gluing in our CARBON FIBRE front beam

- Two projects running side by side as we recut an old RC 44 spinnaker into a fractional kite for Paikea. While Anna is busy with that project, Shayne is in the grinding bay with a heap of carbon fibre mast pieces that he is going to use to create a new front beam and longeron for our catamaran.
This is a project we have been talking about for ages. Our original set up did not allow for attaching a gennaker or storm sail/trinket so we decided to replace the existing front beam with sections of carbon fibre mast from an old America's Cup rig. The longeron is also a top section of AC mast. The pressure is on to get this project completed in record time as we need to haul the boat out for repairs on the hull.

I just found your channel and subscribed. I have to say how awesome to watch people that are so knowledgeable doing these repairs and upgrades. I love some of the other channels and it is fun to watch people learn how to do these things, however, many of their boats would be off my list of boats I would like to own. Can't wait to go back and watch more of your older videos!

Bloody amazing work, just found this channel. Amazing to see those masts don't have any ribs or shear webs, guess theyre just that thick. I bet mitering the beams to the bow sprit was fun. Did you have a template or was it just iterative grinding?
Yep, most mast tubes don't have shear webs or ribs. The bigger wing masts are cored to stop local wall buckling with the thin laminates and big fore aft spans.
Yep, I made a template to initially cut the hole in the hull for the beam. Then I carefully opened it up and iteratively test the fit.
@@youngbarnacles top work. I'm working on a freestanding mast project in Holland. Currently doing some design work on laminate thickness and the best choices of core or not core. You got it, its the local deformation that we're worried about, trying to stop the second moment of area collapsing.
Free standing mast, so simple but so hard😀.
They certainly have very different issues particularly above the deck bearing.
Depending on the geometry you are playing with, things like monolithic with a shear web for the bottom 3rd and conventional core light skin above that. The big bending moments down low of big tubes is just difficult make work a lot of the time.

No, once the glue dried that's where it stays. It's not too much of a big deal as it had only slipped by millimetres. It just means that we will put a seagull striker on the longerone to make sure loads are distributed correctly. It's on the list of jobs to do so I'll be sure to film the process. Thank you! Wait until you see our next video! We are back working on reinforcing the longeron and beam attachment points. We also need reinforcement for forestay and trinket plus a new way to fix the anchor roller. We are putting on the seagull striker and have just finished making a solid carbon strap martingale. I'll make sure to film the vacuum bag process 🤙 We're currently in Spain
