You have saved me a ton of money on 3 different problems. So when I had a roof problem I knew where to go. Thanks for everything and all your hard work.

A Very good description of the way the roof works, great work , many thanks. This will be well used in the future.

Said news for me. I have to do the microswitches and it means roof out. Thanks for doing detailed video. P.s. talked to the local Porsche dealer tech and he says 9 out of 10 roof issues those two microswitches on the frame of the roof.

Happy to help. Nice thing is the engineers have done a great job of making roof removal very easy.

@@jeffrichardsoncardiy It was scary until I found your video. Thanks!

Hi Jeff. Your videos are fantastic! Thank you so much for doing them. I have the issue on my '13 Base now where when I go to open the roof, the hook extends, the roof motors back, but the hook fails to retract, and then everything stops at 3/4 down (black vertical line on your drawing). If I then briefly close the roof, the hook then retracts. Then I open the roof again, and all is well and it opens all the way. Closing the roof from fully open is not an issue.
According to the logic, this means both Signal and Signal1 are bad? I haven't used an ohmmeter to test yet, and I'm not sure where those sensors are if I need to drill them out.

It might not necessarily be both failed. That would be unusual. Testing as shown in the first diagnosis video is required. If the microswitches have failed, the roof needs to come out and to replace the microswitches.

Thanks so much for these 981 videos. My top, 2013 boxster s, will not open and displays a yellow fault message that says top operation not complete. In the first video you show micro switches that bend out of the way, it seems to me that is consistent with my symptoms. I don’t have piwas. Any thoughts?

You don't need PIWIS as this really won't help for this. You need to test like I do with a multimeter to see where the issue is. If you think it's the micro switches on the lock then it's easiest to just remove the lock and test. You will also see if they are bent.

Thanks Jeff for this part 2. Yesterday I checked the reed sensor and the micro in the windscreen and everything was fine. I don't now why every time I disassemble some parts then the roof works perfectly even after a short run around my house. In the video you say, during the opening phase, the command to retract the hook is given by signal xx. Is it possible it comes instead from reed sensor since it notify an open contact once the roof it's far enough from the windscreen? As I wrote yesterday my issue is exactly that the hook is not retracted during backward movement and so it stops at 3/4 opened. Although every time I disassemble the hook mechanisms or as yesterday the part in the windscreen then everything works properly. Could it be the hook assembly is not well positioned and so the magnet doesn't active the reed sensor correctly?

From what I say, I don't think it could be the reed switch. I'd be testing the motor microswitches using the plugs at the back of the cabin before pulling the roof. If you did find problems with these, I personally would be trying to pull them apart and see what is going on inside. Often times this type of sensor can fixed by bending the contacts towards each other a little more or something like that.

quick question, do all 981 roof in the uk operate , open/close using the key thob?

How much noise (motor sound) is emitted when operating the top? I have a 2013 Boxster S and new to these cars. Mine seems very loud at 65 dBa.

That sounds about right. The motors aren't separate from the cabin unlike a hydraulic roof where the pump is going to be elsewhere. If you are worried, go to a Porsche dealership and find a 718 and motor the roof. It's the same roof.

Hi Jeff, I have a 2013 Boxster with the convertible in the fully down position. When I engage the switch to close the top, nothing happens. The windows go down a bit as usual, then nothing? Help?!

Have you tested each of the components as per the first video? Also, do you have a PIWIS to check codes and the position of the motor hall sensors?
