Flying the L-13 Dragonfly - WWII Warbird in Alaska

  • Breathe. Let Go. and remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure….
... and that is how I ended up booking a one way flight to Alaska with no plans, no expectation and only hoped for a memorable time…
Having always dreamt of attending the Valdez fly in, I joined a few fellow pilots as I watched the bush pilots in their STOL airplanes compete...
Amongst the many beautiful airplanes, I couldn’t take my eyes off of the Dragonfly, a WWII L13, modified into an experimental aircraft
....little did I know I would be invited to practice my tailwheel take off and landings in it a week later ….
Thanks to Chuck Miller for inviting me on this flight...

Dang, that looked fun! My dad's first plane back in the early 80's was a bone-stock WWII Taylorcraft L-3. First plane I ever flew. It's hard to beat low and slow, though I guess you can't call this modified L-13 slow! Great video. Brought back some great tail dragging memories. Thanks!

I bought a surplus L-13 way back in 1947 for $100 and converted it into a sprayer. I was staying just ahead of the combines to spray weeds in wheat fields. It was near the end of wheat harvest when the gears in the Franklin engine began to make expensive noises and then everything let go on takeoff; cloud of smoke and oil all over the windshield. Last time I ever saw it was tied down on the Minot, ND airport with a huge puddle of oil under the nose. Worst airplane I ever owned.
