Tailwheel and OFF-airport landings in Alaska!

  • Join me as I learn how to fly a tailwheel skywagon for the very first time. After flying along with a few bush pilots in Alaska, I was inspired to get my tailwheel endorsement and by word of mouth I found the best instructor, Jamie Hastings, in Palmer Alaska.
Thanks to Jamie Hastings for making this surreal experience come to life and Matt Steele for joining us along as well as helping me take some awesome footage!

Tailwheel flying is so rewarding. There’s a world of detail and airmanship about it, it’s addicting. Like finding a thousand more pages in a book you already love. Every nose-wheel pilot should learn to fly conventional at some point.

Rory Shields , yup... some of us have never flown a nose wheel... The biggest tip I have, is fly it from the wheel chocks to the wheel chocks. Stay on it on the ground and they are usually pretty tame. Relax too much and hang on!!!

Sonia flies the Alaska State Bird - A Skywagon! Very impressive that you chose to train in a "heavy" high-performance Skywagon rather than taking baby steps (like I did) in much easier Cubs, Citabria, and Champs before trying the Skywagon. Those big bouncy bush wheels make it even tougher. You will find a Cub on grass a LOT easier. Crosswinds are a force to be reckoned with in a tailwheel aircraft - or the ground loop will bite you. So happy that you got to experience back country flying in Alaska!!

Nice airplane , beautiful scenery. I'm thinking landing on gravel must be sweeter thanlanding on wet grass. Like a field of ball bearings immune to any AC drift... Gracious intro to Tail wheel. Your eyes off the runway during roll out proves that. Go get in a Stearman and do that on pavement and then put that up on TH-cam.
