Hi I have an Australian labradoodle, I give him kibble with beeth bone broth and am wondering what food toppers can help with his joints as I know that his breed usually has hip problems later in life.

I have an 8 month old pit mix rescue that is very scared and anxious. I am working with a trainer who would agree with your advice but I'm wondering what you would say about a bath or shower. I tried to entice him with a lick mat.but no dice. I know there are much more serious issues but I'm just wondering what you think. I should add that I finally just let him go partway into the shower with no water on and lick the mat.

My first trainer had me grabbing her by the scruff and she saw it as playing. it didnt work to correct. Then he told me to use two fingers under the collar. Now she gets stressed any time I go near her collar. She wants to be aggressive with me and bites me. I think its her way of communicating and we are now trying to correct this. Its so frustrating. There are no other dogs in the house. I could use some suggestions please. Thanks

My 8 month old pup is very smart, happy, loving, learns "commands" quickly. She is well socialized, loves every human & animal she meets. The only thing I haven't been able to control is her exuberance in new situations, such as having visitors or going to visit. In these situations, she has no "off" button. So my only "fix" has been to physically remove her from the situation. Once removed (or crated if we are at home) she passes out, like she totally exhausted herself. Is this simply due to her age? Will she grow out of it? Is there something I can do?

"Positive reinforcement trainers versus "the other side""
I'm here because I'm a believer in a raw/fresh diet for out pets and look to this channel for advice and suggestions on how to keep our pets optimally healthy, so I'm watching this video out of that respect. I'm a new(ish) dog owner and have been researching the different techniques employed to help dog owners with their dogs. From my perspective, I'm not keen on the trainers that proudly promote the "positivity" way of teaching dogs. I feel like that term sets up a stark dichotomy that implies, IMO, anything outside of that is cruel and not part of a wider spectrum. When terms such as "suffer" and "humane" are used, as it is here, it comes off as a very politically correct way of looking at this subject. Suffer is a term that denotes a deeper and longer form of "pain," when a simple corrective behavior, while uncomfortable, can be a quick learning lesson. If the positivity form of training is "humane," then the inverse of that is... cruelty.
My new dog started to really aggressively lunge at cars passing in the neighborhood about two months in and it was getting to the point where I didn't even want to walk him. I tried various things; treat distraction, getting him more exercise and play for example, but for whatever reason he wanted to get at the passing cars. He would lunge and loudly bark at them even when they were well past us moving on down the road. He has a really strong prey drive as a GSD/Catahoula mix. This was a potentially dangerous tendency and it only takes a moment of non-attentiveness for a dog to yank the leash out of your hands. I was at my wits end so I decided to employ an e-collar with the shock function to see if I could correct this... and it has. I only used the shock about 4-5 separate times (quickly and after a vibrate) and while he obviously didn't enjoy it... he no longer lunges at cars. I had to give him a vibrate a number of times to give him a warning and now I don't even have to put the collar on him for walks. You can see that on occasion he thinks about lunging, then he checks himself and keeps walking. I did not torment him with shocks, he does not fear cars, he does not tuck his tail when a car goes by, so its possible to get a hard lesson across without some PTSD effects. You can still see him thinking about it from time to time when he's riled up but now I can pull him up or verbally head him off.
I'm no expert on dog training, I have much to learn in helping my dog learn how to live in a community with people, dogs, and cars all around, but the "positivity" seems to be the most rigid form of training and I have a hard time looking at it from that perspective. Dogs and canines correct each other in a way that we would find a bit harsh and out-of-line in a civilized society. I'm in no way saying there isn't any merit to any or most of "positivity," I will try to positive techniques first every time, but I do admit I get a little turned off by the language and attitude by those that promote this way of training.

I have always used “positive reinforcement training “ with all my dogs. I recently rescued an American Bully that had real aggression issues. I came close to sending him back because he was unmanageable at the door with other people (I’m talking off the rails crazy). I worked with him for several weeks and could not get through. I used a trainer who was afraid of him and actually made it worse. He actually told me to send him back to the rescue. I called the rescue agency, who had not been truthful with me, to tell them I didn’t think it was going to work out. This broke my heart but I had people coming and going to my house all the time. I ended up calling another training agency who used e collars. I had serious reservations but I truly wanted to keep him and there was evidence that he had been abused at the place he would have been sent back to so I agreed to it. It made such a difference in him and I’m not sad that I did it. I rarely have to use it. I looked high and low for another option but could find none.

@@sherrylong7774 Is that the Bully in your profile pic? He's a handsome guy and I'm glad you were able to turn the corner with his territorial issues. And I'm glad to hear someone else has had some positive outcomes by considering other options beyond just positive training, I've no doubt you exhausted your options. Like you, I'm not sad about trying the e-collar after having success correcting a major issue, especially when the safety of the dog and others was in question. My little boy is very territorial of the house like yours, so that is something else I need to work out with him and I've had some success with treat bribery, but that hasn't translated to a long term solution yet. I don't want to overuse the collar and part of it is that he's still adjusting to a new home and routine. I want him guarding the house, but I'd rather he have a bit more situational awareness for when and when not to go berserk. 😅

This story really touched me. 💕 It reminds me that even with young children we sometimes have to yell out "no!" to get their attention and for their safety. So you can't just say one training strategy is going to work in every situation for every dog.

    • @theproteagirl5438

Very well said and written. There is a time and place to use certain training tools and when owners educate themselves to use these tools effectively, especially when safety is a concern, it only needs to be used for a short while.

Thank you for your comment. I 100% agree with everything you’ve said. I’m lucky with my pup that positive reinforcement works, but I don’t look down on anyone who needs to use other tools. To correct a behaviour isn’t punishment, especially when we’re trying to keep our dogs safe! I have an issue with the language a lot of positive dog trainers use - it’s like they sit high up on their ivory towers looking down on all of us.

Please could you give chapter markers or an outline or something? The title says 3 ways to train your dog. I'm 18 minutes in and still on positive reinforcement. I know this already and would like to skip forward to her other methods but don't know how far.

I think the training methods you were talking about is compulsion training.
Balance dog training is about building behaviors using positive reinforcement
Conditioning the training tools that the dog is going to be using. Training a dog to yelled to leash pressure.
We do not just jump in and start popping leashes and shocking dogs. That is not balance training that is compulsion training.
We follow steps to set dogs up for success then after a few hundred reps of the dog being successful we will start to bring in compulsion but it only should take up at most 10% of your training and you should be getting it down to only 1% of the time that it will be needed.
I have had dogs slip out of harnesses and run into traffic, dogs that pulled owner down on sidewalks and have broken hands arms and legs. I have had owner trying to direct dogs using training games moving in opposite directions and doing search games but the dogs will not disengage and will either pull to the distraction or pull away and slip out of harnesses collars and running away.
I have seen dogs running through doorways and getting run over because the dog broke a sit stay.
I have seen dogs attacking kids and other dogs. Yes I believe in using positive reinforcement to train behaviors but I do believe that compulsion training will be needed at some point. Most of these clients never used any for of corrections and the few that used corrections used negative punishment.
I believe if you have all the tools and all the enrichment and all the management tools in place and you can get everyone in your house to do the same behavior it can work. But this is not a reality for many people.
So using a small amount of corrections will stop the behavior it will make the dogs life saver and will also be easy for you to establish barriers for the dog so they will not make that mistake in the care of others.

Oh my goodness! I have always believed in positive reinforcement for both my children and now when I am 69 years old with my puppy who was almost 12 weeks old when I purchased him. I live in Portland, Maine and I am having a very difficult time both house training him and leash training my adorable puppy. He seems happy and chill and not afraid. I am having a difficult time training him since I didn’t get him until he was almost 12 weeks old . He is a Malshi and affectionate and not afraid…

Hello Rachel, this has nothing to do with the video but what are the best kibble brands that won’t pull my eyes out? To put it simply I am about to go to college and take my dogs with me that have lived outside their whole life because of my mom. I’m just trying to give them the best life that I can and unfortunately I don’t have the time to make raw food or the money to buy the brands that you usually recommend 😭
The most expensive brand that I could afford would probably be Victor
