I've got a favourite shovel that I picked up about 10 years ago Alot of the new shovels are heavy But mine is light weight I just took the grinder to it because I left it behind on site and it got used not cleaned and was covered in a 3 and 1 mix Yes glad it was mentioned a good shovel is to me like a good trowel feels right in the hand I also found a bucket that lasted a full house build so managed to track them down and have 10 of them put aside, and believe it or not they came from Wickes, when you look in the bottom they have a honey comb appearance They reduced the price because the handle's came off and I could see why, I used pair of pliers close the gap were the wire handlehooks in to the bucket it never came off since
Can I just confirm whether it was a 4:1 or 5:1 mix? Additionally, why do the ratios of sand vs cement exist? I'm starting bricklaying at college in September and are trying to get a head start, at least theoretically anyway 😂👍
It was 5-1 mix, the different ratios exist because there are so many different situations in the building trade need either strong or weaker mixes, best of luck with your college course 👍
@@123b3n123no, when he finished shoveling the material in he said we've got ten in there. He was referring to the total number of shovels of sand and cement. If he put ten sand in there he would have shown ten shovels of sand and not eight. What he's got is a 4:1 mix not a 5:1 as he said at the start. No disrespect to Bud he's been doing it all his life it was probably a genuine mistake I hope he reads this and puts it right.
@@123b3n123 fair enough, hopefully Bud will read this and clarify. I always thought you laid bricks with a 4:1 mix but I'm not a builder which is why I like watching these kinds of videos. It's no big deal but if you're gonna make a video telling people to do something like a pro you should at least edit the thing properly.
When I hear the word ‘cement’ I think of big rumbly trucks with a back end that spins around. Interestingly enough, that’s wrong - that is not cement, so I don’t know why we always called it cement … in a cement truck 🤷🏻 I also think about how good fresh-poured concrete smells! 😂😂
Your ratio mix is wrong you said 5:1 taking that a 🪣 is 4 shovels standard, you have five so that should be five buckets or in shovels 20 shovels you put in 8 then you put 2 shovels of cement which is not a bucket one bucket is 4 shovels. Better to use a bucket so the ratio gauge is always right. But i still like the way how you make mortar as water is the enamy of mortar the less you have the stronger the mortar all in all very goid mix well ✅ done

👍👍 cheers for that
Great video and great information
Glad you enjoyed it
How long you reckon for that mix to be ready? 10/15 minutes?
Always look at their shovel, tells you all you want to know Budd.

Above DPC damp proof course is always 5-1 and below DPC is 3-1
You said a 5:1 mix but you put 2 cement and 8 sand in. Would that make it a 4:1 mix Bud?
He said after he finished the sand that he'd put 10 in

@Ricky-gu6xn the reason I thought 10 sand was because the video cuts before the last shovels, watch it again. We won't know without clarification

ah you got there first and the last shovels were smaller so about 1:3.5
Missed your Calling, you would have made a great Baker 🍞🥖 🎂🍰🍥
I was thinking the same thing when he was talking about ‘lovely froth’! 😊
Good 👁️ for Detail, Tasty Job
Thanks 👍
Do you have to use the concentrate?
Portland cement mortar needs a plasticizer, NOT WASHING UP LIQUID!
