    We just picked up a ‘22 X3 M40i and for day-to-day, it’s about as hard core as most people would need. Nice balance between luxury and sport. I think if I were to go hard-core, full-M, I wouldn’t want to compromise the performance with this lifted body style and would go with the base M3…manual of course.

    • @565565
      @565565 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Have you driven the G80 M3 in manual? It feels like stirring a Boba Tea straw in a cup of dog shit. Plus they neutered the S58 severely in that application, dynos show iys far worse than the numbers show. It's like BMW knew they were going to kill the manual but wanted you to beg them to kill it first. Then they look like merciful heros putting a demented diseased terminal pet out of its misery. All according to plan.
      Anyway the real reason to get this X3M comp, and the reason we got ours, is for your wife. No cis gendered hetero male with normal T levels and no active psychological diagnosis should be caught dead as the sole owner operator of a compact luxury SUV. We tested the X 40i because there were plenty on the lot unsold but placed an order for the X3M comp for the wife. The X 40i (refuse to call it an M), was okay for a grocery getter but rather underwhelming. The reason to buy this car is so you can satisfy the compact SUV body shape requirements that she wants, but also satisfy the M3 comp xdrive powertrain you need. For myself I got a CT5 V blackwing in 6MT, because that's a manual car made to celebrate the manual, not suffocate it with a pillow to the face.

    Got a 22 M40i myself and I agree that the seats aren't as comfortable as you like it. As for the performance it exceeded my expectations and then some. It pulls hard off the line and could blow by most cars on the road. My sales rep actually recommended the m40i in lieu of the X3MC. Said X3MC more for people who want to track their SUV and the low end torque is an issue with poor MPG. Perfect all rounder and can always tune the B58.

    To those that say a X 40i is nearly as fast, consider this, in terms of trap speed (the only true measure of straight line power) the X3m Comp is faster than the X 40i by a greater margin than the X 40i is to the X 30i, truly different leagues.

      @johnl.38 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Where does that ever become relevant though lol.
      All out performance SUVs just don't make much sense, the higher COG but firm suspension will make the ride brutal as a daily, and why would one ever get it as a track car over a sedan or coupe?

    my cousin had an x3 m and it was terrifying to ride cuz we were in New York which the area he lived in had narrow and winding roads and the 0-60 was insane! plus the car i drive is a 122 hp fwd which isn’t fast so i wasn’t prepared for the insane power and torque that the car had! oh and we went top speed in his bmw while racing someone on the highway. the top speed was 161 mph i think.

    Great work Chris!
    One thing I cannot stand about the 2021+ S58 M Cars - that “farting” on the upshift is completely synthesized thru the speakers, there’s nothing thru the exhaust - as opposed to many Audi’s (even base Q5’s, let alone RS5’s), Mercedes, even VW’s. It’s sad and pretty appalling, honestly. Fake engine noise is fine, fake upshift noise is not.

    I really like my 2020 X3M. A bit firm but I've comfortably done 1000 mile round trips in it. I've heard the 2022s have improved ride quality and low end torque a bit, my biggest complaint with my 2020. I actually did have a rough idle and miss but new plugs resolved that. Your test X3M should have the adaptive cruise. It has the buttons for it on the wheel. I agree it should be standard these days, when a Subbie or Mazda has it standard. I have auto-crossed it and plan to do a track day or 2 as well.

  • @jdtechgear
    @jdtechgear 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    It's crazy to notice that Launch Control wasn't even activated on any the launches! Test drove a Macan and while plenty fast and softer and a bit more handling prowess, was way too small. The X3 M40i was great, but it had run flats and wasn't all that much softer, and I wanted more power at the top end. The X3M was my favorite out of all 3. It really does embody the sports car in a practical package, so now I don't have to pay insurance and tax on 2 vehicles and don't have lay awake at night ridding the sports car.

    While I assume BMW made some changes to this LCI model's suspension tuning - I'd imagine it's still pretty hard as a daily driver. I traded my 2020 X3M Comp for a 2022 M3 Comp xDrive and couldn't be happier with the switch. But for what it's worth, if I needed the extra cargo capacity then the X3M isn't a bad choice.

    • @565565
      @565565 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on your frame of reference. If you are driving a 1998 Honda civic with a misfire, then the X 40 will feel kinda okay. If you are driving anything with reasonable performance, then it will be slow.
      I'm daily driving a CT5 V blackwing, the X 40i we looked at for my wife felt like the turbos disconnected. The X3m comp we got her at least feels like it's in the same solar system as the blackwing, the X 40i didn't feel like it was in the same Galaxy.
      Don't be fooled by the 0 to 60 times, that's all launch. Unless you like fixing your ZF 8 speed all the time, it's irrelevant. Look at trap speeds. The X3m Comp's trap speed advantage over the X40i is larger than the X40i trap speed over the X30i. If you didn't care about speed just get the X30i. The X40i is pointless.

    Love your reviews , wish I had money to afford them. Would love to know how much it would cost financing and insuring them. Are you able to recommend something more affordable for average people.

      The base X3 30i is nice, can be well equipped in the $50K's and 255 HP has enough pep for most or the X3 M40i has 380 HP, still saves $10K over the X3M.

    You would really take this over an M3? If the extra space isn't a factor? I can't see why someone would...

      Much better looking, m3 dash is plastic, x3m is leather wrapped, just a much nicer vehicle all around and in my opinion and many like myself I love the driving position better and if you ever drove a true M suv especially the x3m, you would definitely understand. Also much more rare on the road. I’ve had m3, m5, s6, c63, 340, and rs5 and the x3m is my favorite of them all.

      This X3M has incredible power, it’s more than enough, it pulls 0-60 in like 3.8 seconds. That’s almost a full second faster than a Range Rover Sport.

    I had one of these for a while. Realised I’d gone to far from what I loved. The car is ver capable, BUT it made almost every passenger car sick. Multiple people threw up 😬
    The car was fun on the street. Rustled with a lot of very high end italian cars. One day while transporting a desk. Either stayed well ahead or hung in there.
    But for me I felt very disconnected from the car. These cars are truly impressive but they’re so good at so many things, they really aren’t GREAT at anything. Except straight lines.
    I now drive a lotus exige 410 sport. Would love to hear your thoughts on that 😂🙊
