Hey guys, I see a lot of comments about the same thing, so here’s some clarity.
In the opening 10 seconds, I clarify that what I’m referring to is Blu-Ray rewritables from Sony, with this clarity, I move beyond this and start analysing the moves Sony are making.
Note the title is ‘Sony DONE with Physical Media?”, this makes it very clear that I’m posing a question about the future of Sony as it pertains to Physical Media, rather than just their rewritable disk products.
As we’ve seen with PlayStation 5 disk drives, how they’ve very hard to find and get one, Sony appears to be planning something bigger, so the point of this video is analysis, to see what Sony may potentially be planning next.
Sorry if this wasn’t clear from the content within, but that was the point of the video, thus I don’t see the title as clickbait, as the content within backs up the question posed when we analyse the future of Sony and what may come next.
Edit: I have edited the title of the video to make it very clear to anyone that this is an analysis piece, new title being ‘Is Sony DONE with Physical Media? [Analysis]’

No they are not done ! But who ever decides not to give us physical games and movies for our physically earned money they will no longer get my money that's end game in my household!

I dont think Sony will quit with physical media. I could see them not releasing it as much to cut costs but not altogether. Theyre gonna have to downsize enough to where they still make a profit on the investment. Digital Bits said on their site that its only a thing in Japan and not here. So i think theres alot of misinformation out there as well.

You shouldn’t have to explain , all of us who have made videos about this have been accused of click bait .
I think there are only a few of us who investigated the real reason behind .
Instead of jumping on the click bait wagon and not explaining what was going on with Sony.
    Great video Jamie 👌👌👌👌👌

I see a world coming soon where maybe ALL major studios pull out of physical media but...the boutique labels will carry on. Sony themselves may not release something like Karate Kid on disc but Arrow, Shout, BFI, Criterion, Kino, Studio Canal, Vinegar Syndrome, Umbrella or several others will license out the movie to release it. The physical media market much like the vinyl market is going to be made for collectors and not the mainstream. The mainstream has moved on but the collectors market will always exist and be profitable. Prices might have to go up a bit to make it profitable but I think it will always be there.

We couldn't even have even one release of Deadpool & Wolverine? - Why? - The other 2 were given great release treatment.

The moral of the story is unless you have expendable income and aren’t in debt why would you commit to buying physical media when the players are $300-$1000 and new movies are $25+ when you can just stream?
If the players were affordable and 4k discs were promoted more/sold in stores(the limited that remain) then MAYBE physical media would stand a chance and inch a little closer to what it used to be.
I’m not in any debt and have some expendable income so I have a nice Sony OLED and soundbar and for me maximizing a viewing experience means having as good of sound and picture as I can afford. The thing is the vast majority of consumers don’t care and/or cannot afford it when the alternative of streaming is not far off in terms of quality. Hell people don’t even go to the movies as much anymore, good luck getting them to dish out cash on a 4k player and buy new movies at full price since physical renting is basically dead.

I have read that even tapes have a larger market share in storage for companies and professional environment then Blu-ray..
It is quite wild that they still use tapes, but they have 18tb of storage, cost only 100 $, which make them cheaper then HDD for long term storage where no power is needed.
These LTO tape system is around since the 90s.. And they still work, and they still make new and larger tapes, so it is not a dead system, it is the opposite. That makes them so useful for companies.
While Blu-ray would be much cheaper it could not replace tapes.. I find this very surprising..

Sadly, I guess we'll soon be in a fully digital age :( None of my friends buy anything physical anymore. And when I tell them they can lose the digital anytime I get the response - so what if.... I buy it again.
I even have friends who no longer plan to own almost anything....

Maybe there's a new tech coming out we don't no about I like my PlayStation a have em all and disc versions it would be a shame if they take hard copy away because not just the exclusive DLC add ons with a game but things like your physical maps and books collector card's things of that nature and you can hold them set em up in your game area along with other things on the ps5 I was hoping they would make it so you could play ps3 games some of those servers were still running a while back but it would of been good if they revived some old games

How did you get this wrong just like John Campea? Who every other physical media utuber rightly slammed for getting this so wrong. Its recordable blu rays, they werent the leader, I think Verbatim is, so theyre not gonna bother anymore. Totally separate from selling film discs.

Vantiva is the largest manufacturer of optical discs in the world (i think Sony is in second place) and they are selling the whole disc division (both plants on poland and mexico, also includes vinyl production)
The division will continue to operate (for now at least), but it's not profitable enough for a company like Vantiva, even if they are the largest manufacturer of physical media.

Why everyone should make sure they pick up any new releases that they personally want. Because it is in hindsight that collectors or people who just want them to acknowledge that it is present moments like this that a disc is printed in far less numbers and quantities so a movie you might love could be impossible to get 20 years from now because that shift away from sales back in 2024 led to less copies beiung made. Just make sure you go with your intuition and if you feel like you really oughta have something on your shelf get it.

When Sony stops making the players, then that's sends a big signal. With tariffs going up on Mexico, the distribution centre there will mean price increases. Boutique labels will keep increasing prices as the market shrinks self fulfilling I'm afraid.

I think it's low key getting rid of bootlegs of streaming exclusive series. Although long run seed to yet and end physical media.

Sony deal with Disney blu ray and dvd and 4k blu ray. Sony take movie and tv shows come out normal

  • @jasonlaurie4606
    @jasonlaurie4606 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

However, despite some initial reports, the move won't affect your home cinema options for the foreseeable future. That's because Sony's only shutting down its recordable disc business for now - TV and movie Blu-ray releases will continue as normal.
The confusion occurred late last week when Sony Japan announced that from February, it would no longer be manufacturing recordable versions of Blu-ray discs or MiniDiscs.

@@JamieToomeyPresents To be fair: It is a misleading clickbait title.. "physical media" on a physical media youtube channel implies DVDs, Blu-rays and 4k Discs.

@@GenX_in_the_wild I clarified several times in the video, and the title is in line with the content of the video.
Notice the question mark in the title, rather than an exclamation mark, implying that I’m putting forward a question rather than a statement, and with several points throughout the video, I clarify what the point of this video is, that is what Sony may be planning in coming years with this seed of an announcement in my view.
Also I used a question mark in the title, implying that in posing a question about the future rather than a statement about the exact announcement.

I would expect that Sony would continue to make players for many years to come. However I could see them discontinuing Blu-Ray players and only making 4K Blu-Ray players as they also could play Blu-Ray discs. They probably will continue to have a low cost DVD player as well. So right now where they have 3 tiers of players, I could see them having just one tier, probably the highest tier for the 4K discs and a lower tier one for the DVDs as there are a lot of very price sensitive people who only buy DVDs and never buy Blu-Rays or 4K.

Sony is out of their mind🧠they want to push everyone to digital movies 100%, just like on their console as well with digital games.
