How to play FAST on the Saxophone!

- Playing really fast is one of the most fun things to do on the saxophone! It is also one of the hardest things that takes time to learn. In this video, I break down some tips that have helped me increase my speed on the saxophone, and I hope they help you out in your own playing! Happy practicing!

It's been said playing clean will sound faster than playing faster but with sloppiness.

Splitting up into chunks is a good method but you should always land on the first note of the next chunk. For the first chunk the landing note will be Bb. This way your chunks come more naturally and will easier connect to each other.
This is true! It just depends on the passage that I am working on, so I will use both depending on what I am playing.

I've trying learning with the low tempo and then moving slowly the tempo up. But after some point I can't go faster. Fingers at some point start messing everything up. I'm going back slower and trying it up again with no progress. I spent trying for about a year almost everyday. No luck. The phrase is in the octave transition from the 2nd to the 1st octave.
That must be a tough piece you are trying to play! A little more context as to what you are playing might be helpful so I can look at it. I have definitely had music that I have spent many, many hours on literally two measures where I hit a wall at a certain tempo, so I can sympathize with that!

This is a exactly what I tell my students. Now if I could just get them to actually follow through that would be a completely different story. Kids think that they can play Thru something three or four times and then get it up to tempo and it would sound good. A piece of music does not sound good until it is played correctly
I also see this! I just think that this kind of perspective comes with time and continual reminding. Sometimes it's hard to understand when music is truly clean and correct at a younger age. We just have to keep diligent with the process! 🎷
that's a really old school way of thinking and it doesn't work with today's students
this is a problem with the teacher situation, kids these days are using micro learning a lot more and they are interested in a bit of everything with micro rewards, if you work with the systems that are already embedded in them then you'll get significantly better results
strive for fun and breadth over getting a song to be perfect and you'll find that you get much better results much quicker and the kids might actually practice more
@@jakel.3783 I suppose it depends on what age group you’re referring to. Of course, the younger the student, the more simple and small you want to make the lesson. My intent for this topic was to gear it towards young adults through older learners who have the maturity and focus to break down music into pieces so they can practice it with attention to detail. In my experience, even some younger kids are able to handle these ideas! It just depends on who you are working with
@@stokedonsax no, doesn't matter if it's a kid or an adult, if that's the way they learn, it's your job to roll with that and come up with a system that allows them to progress the way they learn
stop thinking its a student problem, it's very much a teacher problem, particulalry when music teachers think they know it all and have never actually spent any real time studying how to be an effective teacher
i on the other hand have a masters degree in education first and music teacher second and as a result I don't have this issue with my students because I know how to manage them and how to teach them in the way they are now used to learning, which is rarely to "perfect" something slowly and more often to try something a bunch then move on so learn to work with the students and stop blaming them!

And what can I do when I can’t play fast when in notes I have only staccato? I have so important solo but I can’t play that. My tongue is too slow 😫
That's honestly a whole other video I need to make. The biggest concepts are: using a good air stream, using a light tongue, and connecting the fingers to the tongue as you are moving from note to note. The tongue is also a muscle, so you have to work up to speed by doing articulation exercises everyday!
I appreciate you can take the time with one song but how would you suggest learning 5 new tunes for band camp?
One bite at a time! Obviously, the more music you have, the more time you need to practice it. But by breaking it down into pieces and taking the time to learn how to play it right, you actually save time! It sounds counterproductive, but it is true. If you just go through and rush your practicing without actually improving on anything, you will have to take more time later and correct all your mistakes. When I have a lot of music to learn, I always go to the most difficult sections first, and tackle the areas that need the most work. You just have to be smart about your time, and make sure to hit things on a daily basis for the most retention!
