While I like your theory on Lucy and Maximus's weird conversation, I think the simpler explanation is that both have different views on sex. Lucy is raised to think it's vital to reproduce in order to recreate civilization, while Maximus is raised in a cult where their views on sex is more like what a monk would think. It'll seem strange to us because we don't live in the same world and we weren't raised like them

14:50 Huh? That conversation is not hard to explain at all. Maximus was a 6-year old adopted into a semi-religious cult and given no sex education. And now he has a crush on a girl and acts like a child would.
Lucy is from a Vault society where there is almost no privacy and sex is treated practically, and without fuss. Remember 'cousin stuff', 'what's your sperm count' and her first 'Okie dokie' scene?
Those two utterly different starting points end up in exactly that conversation.

So what does that have to do with BoS? Well you wrote it yourself. They rarely accepted outsiders which raises the question how did they keep the numbers up? Only reason that can make sense is incestual relationships. Even Lucy's Vault admitted that was a problem for them hence the marrying of outsiders before genetic damage happened. Then there is the apparent segregation of male and female recruits in the TV show BoS. Now for obvious reasons that can be a good thing. . .for awhile. . .BUT. . .if the two sexes aren't introduced to one another at some point then the interest in the other and reproduction won't happen much.

I'm assuming you were a kid once, or maybe are now. Did you learn everything you know about sex from school? He had at least 1 friend, there would be discussion at a minimum. As for the Brotherhood not teaching them, It's a cult. If there's one thing cults teach, it's how to grow their numbers. Even assuming this isn't the same Brotherhood chapter from NV who disapproved of Veronica because of her "proclivities," they would at least want their member to know the basics.

In order for that to happen, they want you to not know or be fearful of the event so you don't think about another in your chapter distracting you from your job.
It's exactly what happened at my school when they said "well to be 100% sure you won't get an STI, is to not have sex or any feelings whatsoever with a girl".
Some boys will go "oh f off" and be rebellious, others will take that to heart and not have sex until they are well into their 20s. :)

@@METALFREAK03 "Yes, he could learn in a cult about sexed, but not all the bells and whistles. It will be limited to keep them in line for what they want."
You're assuming that they consider the male anatomy "bells and whistles." I assure you they do not. When I said basics, I meant they'd explain his anatomy, what happens to it, and where he needs to put it to make a baby. Women's anatomy I could buy him being ignorant about, his own, not a chance. He knew to call it a *Ahem* after all. Even then, that's a stretch because they have doctors who would know about anatomy from autopsies and scribes from books.
"I would highly suspect the Brotherhood would couple you and you wouldn't choose yourself. That would be my guess."
No, the Brotherhood does not arrange relationships. Otherwise, Veronica wouldn't have dated another woman for the other members of the chapter to disapprove of.
"In order for that to happen, they want you to not know or be fearful of the event so you don't think about another in your chapter distracting you from your job."
Fraternization interfering with the job I could understand. For example, 2 Paladins or 2 scribes, because if either of them got promoted, they'd have significant influence on the career of the other. However, splitting the difference doesn't seem to be a problem. In NV Veronica mentions her father being a paladin and her mother a scribe. This way, neither can interfere with the career of the other. As for interference with their job, most militaries have rules about engaging in sex while on missions. I'd imagine it'd be something like that.
"It's exactly what happened at my school when they said ""well to be 100% sure you won't get an STI, is to not have sex or any feelings whatsoever with a girl""."
The problem with this analogy is that your school had a vested interest in their students not having children. The Brotherhood does not. In fact, I can imagine the opposite being true considering how distrustful the Brotherhood is of "outsiders." They do not recruit outside of their order, except for the main character, specifically because of it. Even on the east coast when Elder Lyons broke from the west, they still did not. Again, except for the MC.
"Some boys will go ""oh f off"" and be rebellious, others will take that to heart and not have sex until they are well into their 20s."
I don't see this being a problem in the Brotherhood. Well, except for the abstaining until 20's part. Again, the Brotherhood would want their members to have kids, your school did not. STD's would be feared, sure, but with such a small pool of "breeding stock" and their views on "outsiders" I doubt that it would be a common occurrence since contracting such a disease would all but guarantee to reveal the illicit activity you engaged in while on mission. That, I would imagine would be punished severely given how easily transmissible they are and how often such infections can lead to sterility or death.

The reason Maximus is lacking in sex education is because squires don't have much of a shelf life, and thus the Brotherhood would rather train them in the skills that are useful for the Brotherhood's purposes rather than what they need to know as people, to make the most of what little time they expect the squires will have. This is supported by the fact that when Maximus (pretending to be Titus) claims that "Maximus" has been killed, they immediately send Thaddeus to him as a replacement squire right away without even bothering to subject Thaddeus to his induction rites.

Maximus was basically raised in a cult and raised to be a warrior monk - think of the brotherhood as being like the Catholic Crusaders. Catholic boys back in the day were taught nothing about sex and then when they were taught anything about sex, it was made up stuff in order to deter them from having premarital or casual sex. For example, 2 common myths Catholic boys back in the day were told was that if they masturbated, they would either go blind or they would grow hair on their palms. So I’m imagining that the brotherhood was similar - if you have sex then your penis explodes like a pimple. Maybe they were taught it by the order or maybe since they never got any form of SexEd, a bunch of 10 year old kids got together and figured this was the most accurate description of what happened. Either way Boys are gonna get weirded out or scared by that so they won’t go around trying to have sexual experiences and will instead focus on being knights and the best members of the brotherhood they can possibly be.

I also like that the lack of teeth means it can't chew food and thus has to gulp its food down whole using its mouth fingers.
It seems obvious now but I never thought the name of Gulpers to be a literal description. I thought it was just a colourful way of saying they're ravenous.

I think the sex conversation was just supposed to be cringy. Lucy is shown to be very candid about sexual relations. Her introductory scene is about her interviewing to go to bone town like she's trying to win a job. Sex is something practical to Lucy and she's isolated and bored, and clearly liked it despite how her first time panned out. Maximus on the other hand is our boy with the idiot savant perk. He grew up in a society that probably doesn't put that much focus on sex and intimate relationships. While it's not stated in the current era of the West Coast or East Coast brotherhood it's been generally implied that only knights and up (and their equivalent on the scribe side) get to rear families. You never hear about scouts, initiates, or squires having families, and this cold be due to age, but I think the BoS who like to live in bunkers would put a premium on space. Maximus is shown to be very ignorant or the birds and le bees. So it's really just bored Lucy unromantically propositioning ignorant Maximus.

1: Vault Tec's Censoring Department missed it whilst scrutinising the takes to ensure nothing "iffy" ended up in the commercial, leading to someone later getting fired
2: Vault-Tec was aware of it and just didn't care, remarking "When the siren starts sounding, those fools will probably sell their Grandmother to get in, regardless of what they think they saw or heard in our commercials...."

They probably assumed 'test subjects' meant rats or other animals like in most labs, not the actual vault dwellers themselves. They didn't need to hide anything since no one believed that VaultTec, the "saviours" of humanity, would do such a thing. We see this with Cooper who, despite being involved with VaultTec, doesn't believe the conspiracies and trusts VaultTec until he sees errors and gaps of information that build up to the point that he cannot ignore them. VaultTec made it so anyone who spoke against them was labelled a communist so no one WANTED to question them or think they could do anything wrong since they were meant to be saving people.

It was refurbished by the NCR and functional, as Tandy was looking forward to annex it.

I have one more theory about the refugees from Shady Sand, Vault 4 and Moldaver. As we know that Moldaver was a pre-war scientist that originally work on the cold-fusion technology but we didn't know about how did she survived the war and lived to 2295, my theory is that she was abducted as a 'test subject' of Vault 4 but she didn't get experimented and got locked up in cryogenic chamber. Around 2270~2277 (before Shady Sands 'fall'), Vault 4 dwellers check her up and realised that Moldaver is still normal and released her out from slumber. Moldaver then move up to the surface and found the thriving civilisation of NCR, she joined NCR as a government official and sky-rocketly rose into the ranks. When Vault-Tec nuked NCR, Moldaver led survivors back to Vault 4, some joined Birdy and lives in the Vault while some others joined Moldaver as the Shady Sands reconstruction authority.
This would explained why Shady Sands survivors worshiping Moldaver as their saviour and why Moldaver is still alive without being ghoulified.

    • @jvazacas
      @jvazacas 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Not a bad theory. I am thinking something similar, except the abducted part. I think she bought a spot in a vault just in case nukes dropped, and vault tec instructed the original Overseer to put her in cryo and never wake her up. Once the residents rebelled, they themselves thawed her to either help overthrow the Overseer or to just free her once they did. The rest with her leaving and discovering NCR and helping survivors reach the vault is an awesome theory.

The odd behavior of Lucy and Max in the quarantine area could be explained by a slow introduction of aerosolized chems. Something that could render them more placid or, as you said, a libido enhancer. The rest is chalked up to their personal experiences with sex talks; Lucy's Vault treating fertility numbers as a matter of fact versus Max being raised to live (and die) for the Brotherhood's ideals.
The overseer's behaviors in particular could be a consequence of some past experiments, as you said. I like the idea that he's the overseer because he has a family history, and probably because of his simple and childlike mental state. Maximus grew up in an entirely or largely male society, while Lucy gew up in a vault that valued education, scientific thinking etc. From this perspective, its not too hard for me to imagine that Maximus's idea of sex would be more immature, and outright incorrect, as no one where he comes from fully understands it anyways, and lucy, I'm sure, doesn't come from a vault where having sex/kids is seen as a taboo, bad thing, like we see in the first episode, talking about sex is such an open thing between vault dwellers, which is why she carries on the conversation with Maximus like nothing weird was happening

It's crazy to think how Shady Sands returned to their roots. After all, they were founded by occupants of Vault 15.

Lucy's and Maximus' cringey sex conversation could easily be explained by their backgrounds. It is not out of character. You don't need the gas explanation.
Lucy: Grew up in a vault where the residents are "breeders" for Bud's buds. Was groomed from an early age to be sexually open, had a lot of sex education, experimented sexually with her cousin. Pretty open about sex. She's said cringey things about sex previously. When she marries Monty, she immediately asks him his sperm count. When he doesn't know how to answer her, she goes on and on about it until she is stopped by Stephanie Harper, who has more etiquette on a question like that being from 2077.
Maximus: Very ignorant on all things sex. BoS probably did not educate them at all on sex. Because the BoS primary goal is the gain technology, and to be loyal to the brotherhood, they probably shamed anything sexual. In the barracks Maximus sees a guy masturbating and turns around in disgust.
Further, if their inhibitions were loosened by the gas, why was Maximus so uncomfortable with a proposition for sex? They weren't. If his inhibitions were loosened by horny gas, he would have had sex with Lucy. Instead, he was resistant, guarded, and uncomfortable, the opposite of loosened inhibitions!!!
I love watching your analyses, Oxhorn, but you really miss the ball with this one.

So there's always one thing about Vault 4 that's felt kind of plot-holey to me.
The Hawthorne Medical Laboratories are in the middle of Shady Sands, right? This beautiful, pristine hospital building.
Shady Sands was a relatively large city. Gigantic by wasteland standards. It had more than 30,000 people living there, and was a major trade center, so folks were always coming and going.
No one bothered to figure out why anyone who went into this hospital never came out? Like no one bothered to put up a warning sign that said "Hey don't walk in here its a trap". Even if you weren't permanently abducted by Vault 4 anymore, its still extremely inconvenient to be gassed, kidnapped, and then released again. Proper day ruiner.
Or alternatively, after the bombing, no one put up a sign that said "Vault Entrance here, come for food and safety, sorry about the gas, its not dangerous."

One of the things that I noticed is that the overseer is obsessed with rules and norms. It is normal for an overseer to drink coffee but not normal for an overseer to be the one to remove old coffee cups. He doesn't like letting in new people, but he does because that's the rule. He has one eye, but he uses glasses that are designed for someone with two eyes. He probably remembers seeing a previous overseer use two lense glasses, so he will use them, even though they do not help him at all and it would be so easy to rig up a single lense pair for himself or even to simply hold one of the lenses in front of his eye. Even though she claims to be "Lucy", to his eye the record says "Gucy" and he has to stick to the record.

Weird as that dialogue might've come across, I actually thought the idea was quite refreshing. Even on her wedding day, you see that Lucy has a positive and open outlook on her sexuality, which is really nice to see. She's still the bright-eyed, naive and somewhat more inocent character. The "Good Karma" character, if you may. And its really nice to see a story where a female character being "good" does not equate "virginal". That was the trend in stories for far too long, where female characters who were positive in their attitude toward their own sexuality were either punished for it in the narrative, or "mended their ways and settled down". Lucy being kind, smart and sex-positive all in one was refreshing, and I liked it.

im pretty sure Lucy just approaches sex casually. i mean she brought up sperm count minutes after getting married. and maximus likely grew up without any real form of sex education, so.

Yes...but I don't think it means exactly what we think...
I don't personally think a full grown human became a gulper...but more so...the pack/school of fish was all his family members in a sense thru birth.

@@SuperCaspermanit’s literally stated that the full grown one is his uncle Peter (in the lab). Meaning the one in the wild is not. It’s also a separate experiment because presumably “uncle” means a man, not an impregnated woman. Vault 4 did multiple experiments.

As a modern day wagelsave...I'd have gladly joined up with Vault4's residents post the war and the liberation and would have LOVED enjoying a relaxed and basically a carefree life where the community cares for eachother and is just an overwhealmingly pleasant experience and a way of life...

8:01 I don't think that it's about them studying the effects of radiation on human DNA. I'm pretty sure the reason why they were trying to mix the DNA of radioactive RESISTANT creatures with human DNA, was to create humans that were resistant to radioactivity. Like a ghoul but not "undead" so to speak. That would allow the dwellers to live on the surface more easily and take over the other civilizations.

I kinda wonder if the east and west coast gulpers have the same sort of origin, if they were both the result of Vault Tec experiments. The west coast using local axolotl while the east was using local salamanders, both to study the effects of radiation though clearly different paths to that with the west straight up using human DNA (and human test subjects) to achieve their goals while the east coast seem far less human if human at all.

I think the dialogue in the intake room was fine. Maximus being clueless makes sense and was pretty funny. And Lucy has an open mind and standards that are different from our own. Think about how she talks to Chet at the start of the show about “cousin stuff” or how she immediately jumps that raiders bones on her wedding night. I just don’t think “doing the deed” is that taboo in their world. Her initial suggestion to Maximus reminded me of her repeated line “okey dokie!”
And what else are you supposed to do in there while you wait? Lol

My man, I'm just catching up on everything fallout. As many people have mentioned, Lucy comes from a vault where it's okay to have sex with your cousins and willingly get exchanged every few years to marry and get pregnant.
Here's something else, when they get gassed and dropped, there's a chute visible, this is probably where they drop from and then get placed in the gurney. I'm not sure why you would think that they fall perfectly fine in there 😂. Anyway, think about this; the gas has to have some sort of docile effect. Yes, while many people are good people from shady sands, there would also have to be a lot of raiders that get captured. How would they adapt so quickly to vault 4? The overseer claims that they're still getting new people, they're smelly and have weird traditions and weird food. He's describing raiders! The shady sand people that initially dropped, like Birdie, wouldn't be smelly and weird as described.
Good work regardless, I hope you read this
