  • This is the first "flight" of the BF109 simulator which has been built for a customer. Full details are on creativecockpits.co.uk. Still a little bit of tidying up to do but worth sharing the first "flight" all the same. The prototyping is now complete so we can now offer the 109 in plywood with a recycled plastic skin.

You seem open for some reasonable advice, so here goes. In the setting section of the COD program you can set the view to show the forward scene WITHOUT showing the aircraft. This would take out that double canopy stuff and give you a better sense of being inside an actual aircraft in flight. I know, as I built a fully functioning sit in BF 109 cockpit in my basement that is quite similar to yours, but with a few more refined elements. I would suggest you make the rudders adjustable, NOT the seat. Sliding seats back and forth is fine for motor cars, but not aircraft. Moving the seat back and forth alters the other flight controls in a negative way. If your legs are longer (you are taller than the last pilot) the have your rudders set on a plate that can be moved forward or backwards to match the difference. Just some thoughts to ponder. Other wise a pretty clean built. By the way, your cockpit is missing the flap and trim wheels on the left side of the seat and all the breaker panels, full pump and other important items inside a real cockpit.

Thanks Larry, I will have a look at that section in COD. I think the customer who bought this 109 is already doing that by the looks of his setup. The pedals being ajustable is something I will look into for future builds. I would love to model all the other controls but that's where I start buring into big labour costs. Feel free to send me a link to your cockpit if you have a video and I will put it in the description. If you ever want to reproduce and sell any more of these controls fitted in your 109 I would be happy to refer you to my 109 customers.

    this screams for vr goggles

I never got the goggles before I sold this cockpit but I can't fly without them now. I've got an ejection seat with a HOTAS stick and throttle etc. It's wonderful!

Such a physical cockpit really cries out for a multi-projector setup, with the game cockpit turned off. A single monitor out front does not take advantage of the immersiveness inherent to a physical 'pit.
Compared to this particular monitor arrangement, my 32" monitor positioned about 18" from my face (I use reading glasses for relaxed focus) is much more immersive. That's because the screen subtends an apparent angular width of just about 90 degrees (think IMAX.) With my usual default wide FoV of 105 degrees, this is not far off from a 1:1 image correspondence to reality, which makes you feel like you're in the cockpit.
And with my head tracker tuned accordingly, I can pan my head to bring in all view angles without my gaze falling beyond the screen edge and still not have to swivel my eyes. It's the poor man's VR. And in certain respects better than VR; I can see to grab my beer without knocking it over! 😀
In spite of my nit-pickiness, this is a nice build for those who desire an even closer experience of being in a fighter. Nice work!
    Cheers,
    Glenn

Talk about obstruction. Canopy then the other canopy. Wasn't much thought with this process 😕

I'm open to any improvent suggestions Martin. The glazed canopy is as per the original. The side door isn't but that was a request from the customer for ease of access.
