  • Diagrams and photos of the cockpit section build of my Messerschmitt BF109 flight simulator project.
The BF109 was chosen as it has the simplest construction and is the smallest of the main ww2 fighter planes that I could get decent information on.
For video of the first sessions testing the multiscreen setup with the flight sim running see Part 2 on my channel.
One day I will do a Spitfire though.
One major requirement of the design is that it could be dismantled for storage when not in use as my house is a bit on the small side.
Construction is mainly from 12 mm plywood with 3.5 mm plywood skin.
Now the structure is complete, I aim to make replica instruments based on instructions found in the book "Building Simulated Aircraft Instrumentation" by Mike's Flight Deck Books.
Flight controls will be recreated by modifying a standard joystick.
This may all take some time though.
One thing that I have found interesting through doing this project is how small the 109 cockpit is. I'm not very tall, but even I find it a tight fit.
As of the beginning of November 2016 I have drawn up the instruments on CAD and am about to start manufacturing them.

    Hi Charles,
Can you share the 3d model or sell it?
I also want to make a 109 frame for my home simulator, but I don't have the dimensions.
You did an excellent job. Amazing.
    Waiting for part 3.

Hello Christian, I need to get around to getting some drawings together for this. I've been too busy on another project this summer.

Hi. Im currently making a stuka cockpit. How did you get the measurements for the cockpit.

Hello Max, Apologies for taking so long to get back to you. I got the measurements from a set of scanned Messerschmitt engineering drawings I bought off ebay. Unfortunately in my searches around the internet I have never found any engineering drawings for a JU 87. The Deutsche Technik Museum may be able to help you or direct you to someone who can. Another possible source could be the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum who are restoring a JU 87 back to flight.
Some useful websites I have found for cockpit equipment are,
      www.deutscheluftwaffe.de/
      aircraft-cockpits.com/ww2germaninst.htm
      Good luck with your project.

    How much did it cost?

Hello Arie, probably about £100. I managed to get the camo paint cheap as it had been mixed incorrectly. In the future I would buy better quality plywood as the cheap stuff I used had voids.

Hello Charles, I'll dig them out for you. I need to rework then first though as the curvature is too sharp at the front of the screen.

I've got bogged down on other projects, notably my Land Rover. The instrument panel is progressing, however it is quite a bit of work. Things are speeding up after I got a 3d printer though. Hopefully I'll have something to show in the next few months.

@@aeropunk4127 great news. I miss the Landrover days. I had a 3.5 v8 110. Loved it but jeez it was juicy.

Yep, and this one is relatively good for space.
