    Yes, the 109 had spartan controls as opposed to the Focke Wulf which had single lever prop/mixture/throttle control, electric aileron trim and other niceties. And Brits used to joke that 109 pilots had one leg shorter than the other due to the need for heavy rudder use on climb-out but no rudder trim. But it was a splendid pure interceptor, albeit short-ranged. The most prolific aces in history achieved most, if not all (Erich Hartmann) of their victories in the 109. MW50 was methanol/water injection which kicked its DB 605D up to nearly 2000 HP making it faster than the Mustang and superior to all the Allied fighters of the day in rate of climb.

    Sir don’t call my favorite plane stupid like that...it hurts me feelings!

      My favorite Warbird as well. Just wish there was a mod for the square tip version.

      To call the most successful fighter aircraft in history stupid is more a sin of ignorance than of insensitivity 😉 Also keep in mind that he's a Brit and the Brits are told, from birth, that the Spitfire was a good airplane 😂 🤣 One is tempted to send him that passage in Adolph Galland's memoir when he throws a box of lobsters and some bottles of champagne in the back of his 109 and flies to a party. He encountered three Spits en route and shoots them down without disturbing either food or drink. Seriously, both are *beautiful* aircraft!

      And the rudder pedals are overengineered...wohl kaum!

    Actually the bucket seat is meant to accommodate the emergency parachute which is on your bottom if you strap it correctly, most WW2 fighters had these, so you would be actually sitting on a tightly folded piece of nylon and ropes. A little bit more comfortable

  • @Power5
    @Power5 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    To be fair, in WW2, you sat on your parachute which also went up your back I believe. So you brought your own seat cushion to any plane you flew.
    What is the circle thing on the front windshield lower right corner? Looks like a spaghetti strainer or something LOL
    22:48 "Ooh, whoopsie." -CAP LOL This is my problem as well when someone is showing me something. "Hey let me show you this item and discuss it before we....damnit, you already pulled the trigger didn't you?"

      Helps to defog the armour glass plates. I believe the inner layer was perspex and had an air gap to absorb any spalling or splinters

    • @devil5051000
      @devil5051000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Small packs of moisture absorbing compounds were placed in this opening. I don´t know if modern silica gels like the one you find in new electronic devices were in existence in the 40s.
      That compound absorbed any moisture between the different glass plates. Without that the armored windscreen would have become blind by condensing water between the different glass plates in greater altitudes.

    And also probably the easiest of the warbirds to fly. It has a nice, gentle stall and will generally land without killing you. The hard part's getting it to go straight on takeouff.

    • @Stahlwollvieh
      @Stahlwollvieh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      All depends what you're looking for. Comparing it to a Fw190 I have to agree that the stalling behaviour is much more easily controlled. On the flipside taxiing and landing is probably easier with the 190. The takeoff is something I actually struggled with more in the Dora, but your mileage may vary. But cruise flight in the Dora is sooo much more comfortable than in the 109, and formation flight with the Dora is beautiful, yet an absolute nightmare in the 109.

      109's were notorious for their poor landing gear configuration and just difficulty to land in general, not to mention the cramped cockpit.

    Well at least if something breaks inside the cockpit you'll only need to use your knowledge on bicycle repair to fix the issue xD

    A few things to mention: Not that it matters much, but I got the MK108/R21 switch wrong. The referred to MK108s are not only your wing mounted ones. The trigger used for firing the MK108 cannon is the same as would be used for rockets, were they available, so that one switches the function of it.
    Also it would appear that you no longer get 3 flares of every colour, ED seem to have reduced it to 1. Sadface.
    Finally, silly Cap: When you would up the ammo counter you wound it up to the 5th white line from the bottom, not the 4th. This way you're gonna end up wondering why the heck your gun's not firing when you're still supposed to have more ammo. :P

    The FuGz25a homing beacon can tell you if you are going towards or away from the beacon by the way it moves as you turn. If it flicks rapidlyly fully left or right you are flying away. If it turns at the same rate as the aircraft you are heading towards the beacon. The horizontal needle will also rise towards the Nahr (near) mark. The three grades indicate range to beacon. Bottom= 100kms, middle 50kms, top 25kms. All ranges being approximate based on atmospheric or geographical conditions and strength of beacon transmission. The allies also used to jam the transmissions or spoof them, causing aircraft to get lost. On a few occasions pilots landed at allied airfields.

    You’re making fun of 70+ year old technology but you can’t make your voices clear and unmuffled in 2020?
