    Imagine a combat flight sim where every single plane in the game was study level with these sounds and visuals. The community is long overdue for something like this. Asobo should work together with the il2 team and irom simulations to make something truly great....My dream, anyway :-(

    I have zero authority in this. But I found that warbirds felt different between FS and Combat sims. They feel like heavy GA planes in FS.

      Hi Santa Six,
      For sure, each sim tends to have its own strengths and weaknesses and high speed aerodynamics / manoeuvring at the edge of the flight envelope, are not strengths of MSFS. I do prefer the flight model of the DCS 109 but, these days I generally just like to cruise around and for that sort of thing, there’s no better sim than MSFS (unfortunately, the maps in DCS just feel a bit dated / restrictive). Your observations generally aren’t unreasonable though. To be fair, I have virtually zero authority on the subject also haha, never having flown a warbird myself.
      Cheers and all the best : )

      I totally agree but opposite opinions were to expect. It's a psychological problem. People playing the sim with 2D screen and speakers subconsciously adapt their expectations to TV-like sounds. In that frame of reference the sounds are actually quite good. However a VR + Headphone user expects something way different, which is the sound of a 1000HP V12 engine only one meter away and bolted onto the same frame he is sitting on himself. That is an entirely different matter and most MSFS plane sounds fail in that regard, especially when it comes to the very low frequencies that good headphones actually could deliver. Few match those much higher expectations, like the Spitfire or the DC6 (at least in my opinion). There are several planes however, which are considered excellent, but unfortunately have poor sounds in a VR environment and I dont use them anymore, some I even uninstalled because of that (like the Lightning).

      Hello Paul Henri,
      I would like to make some sort of video with the 631 at some point, but I have something more “artistic” in mind, rather than a typical review. I’ll most likely be taking a look at the B307 first (when time allows) and have a couple of other video projects to follow up on also. In short, I would like to take a look at the aircraft, but it’s not a priory at the moment I’m afraid (I just don’t have enough free time to cover everything).
      Thank you very much for the suggestion though! Cheers and all the best : )

      Haha, it’s a good question Dale, FlyingIron have done a very nice job with the aircraft! A few little additions I would like to see (though they really are just icing on the cake); a few tweaks to the flight model (FlyingIron are already working on that), more supercharger whine externally and “working” armaments (just with visible muzzle flash effects). Either way though, the 109 is a superb offering and great fun in MSFS overall.

    Looks like it handles properly - good takeoff and landing! They did a nice job with the shaking, pressure needle jumping, etc. I love the 109 in DCS (and did in countless older sims) but after hearing Flying Iron's engine sound I might end up with my first MSFS warbird for that factor alone. Really has the sound of some in-cockpit videos.

      Yes, the 109 is definitely a bit of a handful, which I gather was accurate haha. There were one or two flight model issues, but FlyingIron already seem to be working on those (and indeed, they’ve done a lovely job with the aircraft overall). The DCS 109 is excellent, but I love having the entire world of MSFS to explore.

      Hello Jackson,
      You firstly need to make sure that you have the BF109’s prop control set to manual (as demonstrated in the video). After that, I just use my normal prop axis control. The control bindings in MSFS are either “Propeller Axis”, or I suspect “Increase / Decrease Propellor Pitch” would work also (if you don’t have an axis available).
      I hope that helps? All the best : )

    I don't understand why brits feel the urge to switch the "s" and the "sh" pronounciations in Messerschmitt. It's MeSSerSHmitt. The first 2 are the "s", the second is the "sh". Not "Meshersmitt".

    • @Guerry-3
      @Guerry-3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't be so hard on our narrator. I cannot think of any non-native speaker who did not foul up pronunciation in another language, even if they are fluent. Even native speakers do not get it correct all the time.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not an “urge” Jocking, it’s a simple mispronunciation haha. As C-990 points out, I don’t think any of us could claim to be perfect linguists, even in our own languages, let alone someone else’s! To a Brit, the “s” and the “sh” don’t sound hugely dissimilar, whichever way round one puts them. Messerschmitt is an interesting one; the word became part of the English lexicon also and words / pronunciations often tend to change between borders and languages.
      You are of course correct; I mispronounced the name, but it wasn’t done intentionally and I highly doubt it lead to any confusion, as to what I was reviewing. I’ll try and get it right next time ; )

    I do love inertial starters. I got chills from that crank. Having seen a BF-109 decades ago at an airshow where the CAF had a large part and the had some mock "dogfights" and ground attacks including their "Tora, Tora, Tora!" Runs. All with pyrotechnics for the bomb hits. One thing I remember is that sound. Spectacular.
    One thing I guess I have to get used to is the censored swastika. I get it but historical accuracy is a point of contention for me but everyone's doing it so unless I want to repaint, I'll have to settle for modern revisionism. On the weapons deal, if the don't want to go TacPac like VRS did, they could simulate the oxygen fired simulated gun fire like you see used at airshows. That keeps it "peaceful" but allows the wannabe airshow pilot do mock attack runs.
    On the side, I look forward to your briefings. Oh yeah, headphones are mandatory to enjoy this video. Crank it between narrations when he's showing the outside displays and you won't be sorry.
    QUESTION: Did the Gustav have a powered inertial starter or is it a work around to keep from animating a crew member cranking the fly-wheel?

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, I very much agree Kyle - there’s something very satisfying about an inertial starter.
      That sounds like a fun airshow! I’ve seen at least one 109 over the years and the sound really stuck with me also, specifically the whine of the supercharger (which is maybe lacking just slightly with the FI 109, though the sounds are otherwise excellent).
      I nearly made the same point about the swastika. I realise it’s a contentious subject, but I’m no fan of historical revisionism and personally, I’d rather see these aircraft as they flew. The only thing I will say there; these days (sadly?) even the real-world 109’s seemingly don’t have the proper markings, at least not the flying examples I have come across in TH-cam. So FlyingIron has “faithfully” recreated the modern aircraft in that respect. . . I would also like to see working armaments (as we’ve seen with the MILVIZ Corsair) and personally, I think that would be one of the next logical improvements for FlyingIron to make to their products (though I don’t believe they have any plans to do so).
      From the little that I know of the 109, I don’t believe it did have an electrical starter (the K variant in DCS still has to be cranked by the ground crew), I think it’s just a concession that FlyingIron have made for the sim (and fair enough!).
      Thank you very much once again! I’m glad you enjoyed the video : )

    14:03 Slick as always! Warbird aeros are one of my favourite things to do. Top tips for barrel roll: before you pull up, pick a feature 90° off, pull straight up til ‘feet are on horizon’ then loaded roll to pull aircraft nose to your feature. Adjust controls to keep roll and pitch consistent. Aim for same degrees nose down as nose up. That’s the basics but let me know if you want the detail 👍🏻

    Took their sweet time, but finally someone made the 109 for MFS! Looks and sounds great. The only negative stand-outs for me are the prop animation which is really bad, and some systems, like oxygen, don’t seem to have the same depth as in DCS.

      FlyingIron have pretty much slipped into the “day 1 purchase” category for me now; they’ve barely put a foot wrong since coming to MSFS and their dedication to their products after release, is also exemplary. I think the inability to fly a loop, was a bit of a flight model issue, which FI do seem to have addressed with the first patch.
      I guess we won’t see a native flyby view in MSFS until 2024 now haha, but I gather the most recent version of Flight Control Replay (actually, the same tool I used for my virtual wingman during this video) will include a flyby camera, so that might be worth checking out if you’re really keen.

    In the loop, "the aircraft almost wanting to snap" would be because one slat went in before the other. During the war, this may have saved many an allied pilot who was in the sights of the Me-109 pilot and whose aim was put off momentarily. BTW , the Luftwaffe pilot had no idea of "BF-109"-to them , it was the ME-109 (pronounced "may" hundert neun"

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations

      100%, Dackah. The problem was, I couldn’t get over the top of the loop without the slats deploying, the 109 was just bleeding off too much energy in the manoeuvre (and I wasn’t able to get the aircraft through the loop any more quickly - I already had full flight control deflection). There was an issue with the aircraft’s flight model at the time, which has subsequently been corrected by FlyingIron.

      In terms of the flight model, hands down the 109K wins (in fact, that addon always sticks in my mind as being one of the most convincing, when it comes to the “feeling” of flight). I jumped back into the DCS 109 just the other day, in order to compare and I have to say that visually, it’s looking a little bit dated now and I prefer the sounds of the MSFS 109 overall. I know a lot of people don’t see the point of warbirds / fighter aircraft in a civilian sim but in fairness, none of these machines are fighting any more, so taking them from A to B, or carrying out an aerial display, are both pretty valid / realistic uses of such an aircraft in the sim. I cant get the bird to turn with the tail wheel on Series X. It will only turn in one direction. Any suggestions?? Also, the takeoff is horrible. Pulls really really hard to one side..plus when decreasing the throttle all the way down to idle, the engine dies… is there going to be a fix for all of this? Its basically useless for me at this stage..

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello Matt,
      Well, the 109 has a castoring tailwheel - ie no steering per se. The aircraft has to be turned with rudder (which will only become effective with a decent amount of airflow / prop wash going over it) and differential braking. I believe if you turn on the simplified tailwheel option (from the tablet), that may help you out. The 109 is indeed a pig during the takeoff haha; I don’t know how true to life that behaviour is but, it will be particularly tricky to handle using a gamepad. As I mentioned during the video, I find that full deflection on both the rudder and the aileron, before even beginning the takeoff run, is the best way to go. I had the same issue with the engine dying during the landing; again, I don’t know whether that behaviour is accurate but, given that FlyingIron left it in after the first patch, I would have to assume that the cutout has been intentionally modelled. . .
      I hope that clarifies things a little. All the best!

      My pleasure Michael!
      For the roll behaviour, I just set aileron trim using the tablet and go with a setting that works nicely at typical cruise speeds. I’m assuming the 109 only had a fixed trim tab in roll, so setting and forgetting on the ground is probably the most realistic option. That being said, if I find myself in the cruise and not able to relax due to the roll behaviour, I’ll simply readjust the setting (your method would work nicely also).

    That looks like a lot of flap area for takeoff. It looks the same as full flaps for landing. 10 to 15 degrees is pretty much standard flap setting for takeoff; any more and drag starts taking hold. All that flap area looks like it would do more to keep the aircraft on the ground than it would serve to help get it airborne. Does the 109 need flaps for takeoff in a clean configuration?

      Hi Sapfu,
      The addon might be slightly more forgiving, if only because you’ll initially need full rudder input during the takeoff, ie the relative sensitivity of a twist-grip shouldn’t be a problem. That being said, the 109 is probably still going to be somewhat of a handful; indeed the aircraft is a tricky beast with any sort of a setup haha XD

      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, Robert. I don’t know whether that’s a limitation of the sim, or a limitation of the recording tool that I use (I would have said the latter, but at least one of my other viewers seemed to think that it’s a sim issue). The sim certainly can model free-spinning wheels but, any wheels that have brakes attached, tend to come to a stop straight after liftoff (as if the brakes are already applied).

    The torque effect is a weird one on this addon. I never actually flew high-power planes like those, but compared to DCS, which I consider a benchmark in flight dynamics, it feels "fake".
    The roll effect seems way too powerful (especially in the takeoff roll), and constant. The throttle almost becomes a secondary aileron control given how linear the response is. Feels way too weird an unnatural to me.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Rafale,
      I actually agree with you; DCS is still the gold standard when it comes to this sort of flight modelling and by comparison, the FlyingIron 109 does feel a little bit “artificial”, in terms of some of its behaviours. That being said, most of that comes down to the limitations of MSFS I believe and I think FlyingIron have done an exceptional job given the sim. It might not be perfect, but I find the 109 to be the most convincing warbird in MSFS to date (and as always with FlyingIron’s products, I’m sure the aircraft will continue to go from strength to strength).

    It is always hard to describe "air" and the feeling of moving through it even in computing terms. The air in say DCS feels like it has more "numbers" to compute and so less missing digits. With far fewer eyecandy the sims can concentrate on aerodynamics more. MSFS has always felt like it was both behind in the computations and also missing those computations. In that oh so critical flare and float just before touch down thats where my immersion gets muddied in MSFS. The warbirds in particular feel clunky, the air thick. One thing to do to highlight this is to turn off ALL your graphics settings, res down low. Now fly. Go back to your beautiful maxxed graphics and do it again. Going to buy this to support the dev as always but with no teeth, "thick air haha" and all you can do is pretend to be the rich guy who just flies at airshows, probably gather dust after the initial oohh ahh..

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree, JimJam. I’ve had this discussion a few times with a friend; there are two types of simmers, pilots and engineers haha. Even if an addon performs to the numbers, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it “feels” right and personally, I’m much more interested in how something “feels” to fly, as opposed to how “accurate” it is. DCS is (generally) significantly better than MSFS in this regard (and X-Plane also, when it comes to the big jets). In fact, funnily enough, the DCS 109 has one of the most convincing flight models I have come across; I took that thing up in VR once, looked out over the wing and actually “felt” like I could sense the air going over it. MSFS has some ways to go in this regard, but it looks / sounds like MSFS 2024 will offer big improvements.
      As for playing the rich guy who just pootles around in his warbirds, that sort of thing is right up my alley haha! As much as I love DCS, I find the maps to be a bit restrictive / uninspiring by modern standards and I’m often not in the mood for combat.
      Cheers and all the best : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Thanks for the reply and I agree 100%. I just sat down and flew the 109 a good 30 minutes in VR just AFTER flying the DCS version. DCS was far more the better feeling aircraft and how I would imagine it. I have some 500 hr or so in various high performance prop jobs mostly in a 300 hp+ Lancair so I can make some educated guesses to how these WW2 birds handled. I take out as much deadzone/slack in my TM setup but still the MSFS FM ing just feels mushy and disconnected. Stalls, accelerated maneuvers, abrupt inputs all feel sedated... Imagine DSC's aircraft/FM in the beautiful MSFS realistic visuals!!!!!
