1:10:10 also, Detective Torres (Bobby Cannavale) explicitly states, "you Hollywood girls, you're so desperate to become famous, you don't even realize how easy to become infamous." I think that's the thesis of this movie, but also holding a mirror to our current audiences. agreeing this idea of divine intervention is kind of 'god in the machine' or Deus ex machina of story writing.

Since his death, people have tried to say that his spirit haunts a local cemetary he apparently use to sleep at when he was a kid. I personally think it's bs, but there's all kinds of weirdos who break into the cemetary & try to do rituals & grave robbing. I remember thinking "It's not the dead I'm afraid of, it's the living."

Story time: After college I worked at an adult store at night to do internships during the day. The store had a theater area where patrons would pay to watch the performer of the evening perform a show. They would be on one side of a window that looked in on a room (closet) with the performer. I don't remember if it was a 2-way mirror or just a window.
It wasn't a quarter and the customer usually negotiated with the performer on what they wanted to see them do. I remember they usually had a sandwich board with a menu and prices of what they would do in the room.
Dunno if that helps with the concept or not

What I think is so cool about Maxxxine is that the only onscreen violence you see is against men. Which is such a flip from what 80s horror movies were like. Also women were all in positions of power, the female cop, the director, a female special effects artist, and of course Maxine herself. I'm not usually one for "woman power" films, but this was how they should be done.

When Mia was getting the aged Pearl makeup done for X, she used that experience to get more into character and feel trapped in her situation. I believe the head casting scene was a callback to that. Maybe not though! Maybe it’s just a claustrophobia thing.

I definitely like Chelsea’s interpretation of the ending. I want to add that Maxine, despite likely only going after her father for the fame it would bring her, is the last person holding the moment of silence in the end, indicating she’s probably praying. And in the dream interview, she thanks god for everything she has, indicating she may have reconciled her faith to some degree. That or she’s using it to play into her new starlet persona.

  • @StarbaseAce
    @StarbaseAce 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

I know y’all are a little more lukewarm about Maxxxine, but this podcast just made me love the movie even more.
Also, the ending can be read as the dark side of true crime, but it can also be read as nepotism. Her dad said he’s making a movie and she’s the star. The other victims were killed as punishment, but He gave his daughter a choice, she could still be saved. She has a chance to be a star because of all the work that her dad did and in contrast she doesn’t even do much except just be there and be his daughter. No one cared that she survived the Texas Porn Star Massacre, but everyone wants to know about the daughter of this killer.

I noticed a recurring thing where Maxine was really passive and lacked agency in what was happening to her. Several times throughout the film, a side character ends up monologuing while Maxine stands there silently. When someone tells her to do something, she does it with minimal thought. She's told to obey the director in order to get ahead in the industry and she tells the director that she will obey her. Instead of facing off against Kevin Bacon in the Psycho house, he gets caught by security. Instead of running Kevin Bacon over in the alley, he gets captured and killed by the agent and bouncer. The cops saved her from the cult instead of her saving herself, the cops mortally wounded her dad completely offscreen, and she just happened to be standing near him with a gun when the police helicopter shows up. I'm not quite sure what it means narratively or thematically, but it felt very deliberate.

I never really comment but I just want to say (love Dead Meat and the pod and everything yall do tysm for being who you are and doing what you do) I love one part of the ending so much, considering how much shit it gets, is the fact it ends with the cast of maxine’s head. obviously it mirrors the credits of pearl, but it also shows that maxine has progressed past her trauma of X (i.e. obviously the headcast/panic attack scene) plus the twisted entendre of the imagery mirroring pearl’s credits scene and yet maxine ‘never wants it to end’. she not only endured the pain of a headcast (which i’m sure any actor will tell you it’s fucking horrible to endure) but she has formed it into purely her reason for fame. it ties the 80s post-serial killer/satanic panic hysteria into a much more contemporary commentary of true crime. i’m sure there’s way more to say but it’s just one image stuck in my brain and i’ve just finished the movie.

I think the whole ending of the movie is purposefully as whacky and kinda tone breaking as it is. I mean the whole sequence ends with her saying "you gave me exactly what I needed: divine intervention" it's about how the only thing really giving you fame is luck. It doesn't really matter how much you actually work or try

Great episode. Didn't love or resonate with Maxxxine the same way I did with X and Pearl, and giallo just isn't my favorite genre, but I can always count on Ti West to go above and beyond. So I respect the hell out of it.

Was not expecting this film to be a Giallo. I went to see it with my partner and he said he saw the moment when i realized I got so excited I shook his arm 😂 I prefer the first two movies by far, but I love the campiness of Gialo films and it suited the content of this film. I feel like if they took it more seriously the reveal and everything just wouldn’t have been as effective? A plot as obvious as this needs a certain level of humor alongside the darkness. Also the day before I watched this movie I went to universal and stood in the except line Mia Goth ran through I was so happy.

I am fairly certain you had to continually put in change to keep the window open. When the change "ran out" a blind would cover the window the performer was seen through. It's like a sexy pay phone lol

I was trying to think of what felt off about Maxxxine and you guys explained it perfectly! The characters weren’t not fleshed out at all. Even Maxine felt like a raw shell of who she was in X. I definitely was expecting more chase scenes and more tension, but it definitely felt like the characters were just there to be killed off.

I was a child actor and I never had an audition on a soundstage. They were almost always in a production office somewhere. There was only a couple times that I can remember where the location stood out as unique. Like I had one on tbe WB backlot in burbank but that was still in an office. Another time was at the chateau marmont by the pool which was very distracting. And another was at Universal citywalk, because there's actually offices above all the stores.

Empire Strikes Back is seen as the cinematic masterpiece. A New Hope has the most cultural nostalgia. But the Star Wars OT wouldnt exist without the satisfying, if not slightly dull ending on Return Of The Jedi.
Maxxxine is The Return Of The Jedi here. It ensures the trilogy works and is thoroughly entertaining, even when the ending feels a little predictable and straightforward.
Overall a fun movie and one of the best horror trilogies of all time.

Return of the Jedi is on a far more equal plane to Star Wars and Empire than MaXXXine is to X and Pearl.

My only thing with maxxxine is that i feel like I (and anyone who saw "X") already knew where this plot was going from the start and i think Ti West has been so good at being subversive with X and pearl that you expect this movie to really go to new places. Buuut.. Once you finally reach the ending portion the satanic panic was played so straight and for me i was kinda like ok if we werent gonna go anywhere with *this* i wouldve spent that time fleshing out the people that surround maxines life that were supposed to care abt

I'm SO glad the lawsuit got mentioned and I hope we get more details on that soon. The lawsuit seems weird but it's not something I want to overlook and I hope Mia Goth didn't do it but I don't want to just ignore this if there is a hint of truth to it. I'm so glad that that got mentioned and you guys are making this podcast on it! I was so curious to hear more of your finer thoughts on how it's a solid film but it doesn't go up to par with the other two films!

The Lily Collins accent is so funny to me because the accent she’s doing couldn’t be any farther from the accent her character claims to have (council estate North Yorkshire) and I honestly still can’t tell if it’s satire or not.

I think that Maxxxine killing people who are already dying is a way of making sure your protagonist is not viewed as villainous.
I am also old; I was a newly minted adult in the 80s and I went to those adult booths with the performers on the other side of the glass.
They could see and hear you, and it really was only a quarter or up to a dollar; and the way they made money was by having the show times be only a few minutes, thereby inducing you to pay over and over.
Now I want to see you guys do a podcast on the Darren Mc Gavin tv movie “The Night Stalker”.

Peep Shows were a big thing in the 70s-90s. You'd pay a quarter for a small amount of time, like maybe a minute, and multiple people would be doing it at once for the same performer, so the money added up.
