Raspberry Pi CM4 Gaming Handheld: Retro Lite CM4 - First Look

  • A quick look at the Retro Pie handheld I’m building with my good friend spanning over 12 months. The system is powered by the latest Raspberry Pi CM4 module (2GB RAM, with wireless) and lasts around 4 hours on a full charge. The only thing I’m missing is HDMI out for the prototype PCB, but that should be fixed pretty soon.
It plays up to Dreamcast and PSP at full speed, the PCB hopefully being upgradable in the future with newer compute modules. The case is 6061 aluminum metal anodized green, and the bezel is from an original switch lite screen protector that has been painted.
Not officially finished but we’re pretty close.
More details can be found here if you’re interested in building your own:
    bitbuilt.net/forums/index.php...
Note: Some lockups/frame drops were due to crosstalk on the SD card clock line. Don’t route digital in parallel with analog signals! Woops! Now fixed on latest version.

This build is looking beautiful! And you have a battery life indicator too, it seems!

Thanks Jeff! We used the MAX17055 from maxim over i2c and wrote out our own C code for it. It’s a pretty little useful IC, it can provide a bunch of information about the battery just by reading some registers after initializing it. Would recommend it if you need an easy to use fuel gauge. We’ve made some progress on the display now, showing % values of SoC via dispmanx also.

@@stonededge That's awesome, I wish more builds would go the extra mile like you have. Shows a lot of dedication to the polish, not just hitting the MVP. (Also that fun little intro animation)

Definitely super interested in getting a kit whenever you finish it.
I know the case is custom milled, but is there any chance that genuine switch lite shells would be compatible (with modification) when all the modules are completed?

Plan is to hopefully make a kit with slight changes to the design in early to mid 2022, once the chip shortages get a bit better. Right now a lot of parts just aren’t easily obtainable. The CM4 is also impossible to find anywhere right now. Unobtanium.

I haven’t tried that out but hollow knight is a 64-bit game, it won’t run with the current OS (RetroPie) which is only 32-bit. I’ve been playing an Android Port of it though and it’s been fantastic with Android 11.
