I am currently planning a more powerful version of this project with analog sticks and the ability to use PlayStation Now. So if you got ideas for improvements then let me know :-)

    • @deadbird99
      @deadbird99 4 ปีที่แล้ว +96

You really did an amazing job! Some ways of improvements:
      - add a battery and BMS
      - put the last screws (10:58) at the bottom
      - to save space (I mean: a LOT of space) you can desolder some of the ports such as the two USB-A. I bet you can save 1.5cm of overall thickness
      - about the button: if you plan on adding a directional cross instead of four buttons, take a look a Jiri Praus' brass Gameboy. There are a some ideas you could steal from his design.
      - one last: please, please use silicon wire 😂
That's all I have in mind for the moment. But again, this is an amazing project. I can't wait to see version 2! And for sure I will build mine 👍🏻
PS: "but how the heck can he post comments a week before the video is released???" comments incoming 😁

      @HS-eq3gk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      First off, love the console.
I think in terms of the design it could be more "comfortable" I know I am just watching it and haven't actually held it but I think more curved edges (similar to the Vita and psp) and make sure to place the analog sticks at a diagonal from the buttons because that's more comfortable for thumbs to move (diagonally) rather than up and down which is a thing people find especially annoying about the switch.
(Also looks like it has space for more buttons overall?? idk)
I think some of Ben Hecks portables are a good reference for nice designs.
Looks awesome, good luck with the next version

As a second version you can desolder the GPIO, RJ-45 and other big components and solder wires to them directly, that way you can make the device a bit slimmer. Also you can redesign the shape the left and right back sides of the device so that its more like a controller (comfortable).

This is perfect! I had just started planning a very similar build using a 7" HDMI display, a Pi 4 and Teensy for game controller inputs and I wasn't sure where to get a proper HDMI cable and then you post this video!
I'm going to be integrating a Blackberry trackball into mine which will connect as a USB HID device and be used as the mouse with shoulder buttons "I hope" for left and right click, as well as a third button to latch and unlatch scroll wheel functionality. Luckily somebody already made all of he teensy code for that. Maybe this is something you could add to the next iteration of your project.
I'm also hoping to integrate a small wireless keyboard, initially I had planned to make a space inside the case where it could be stored but not seeing something similar all put together I don't think that's such a great idea.
I am interested to see how you are going to approach making this completely portable. I'm planning to get a flat LiPo pack, as large as I can fit in the case to maximize battery life and will be digging through your videos to find an appropriate power distribution and charging circuit because I'm clearly going to need something that can do better than 1 amp. I hope you have something for that already.
I'm going to be using a display I already have that is designed to operate at 12 - 40 VDC so you probably already know what buck converter I'll be bypassing :)
    Great work as always man.

I would love to see him take this to the next level, and make this so much more well rounded, and easier to use by doing one or two of the following:
Get proper control of the backlight(not just by using the monitors OSD/controls, but a descrete adjustment or maybe even get it to work with the windows stock system screen management) I would certainly offer up a good bounty to see this done.
And two getting windows to read in the values for the battery to to windows "fuel" gauge to show it what the battery charge is as if it was a legitimate laptop, something I have spent hundreds of dollars and hours trying to do, unseccesfully a while back.

So it definitely needs to get a LOT thinner.
    Some thoughts:
    Smaller speaker, (but maybe x2).
Cut the unwired space of the PCB.
Rework the button mounting (you could use a slide mount, instead of screws).
Don't use "standard" plugs inside, instead hard wire everything you can, or at least get rid of the big housing somehow.
"Puzzle" a little around with your parts first and don't be afraid to design some parts or everything "tilted".
Also think about ergonomic holding "depths" and spacing, but also about how the weight of the device fells in your hand and how you can deal with that, by using just an ergonomic design.
Don't worry about the battery size. Give it the last thought and look then at your prototype and think about form factor and capacity then.

It's unfortunate that it probably wasn't powerful enough to run PC games that would be any kind of graphically demanding, despite being a windows handheld. Nowadays there's a million different retro handhelds you could pick from for less than you spent on this project that can emulate as much if not more than this could, but this is still cool because you literally built the thing yourself!

If you just need 5V/3A you can even build this without a dedicated USB-PD PCB. The USB-C standard allows for drawing up to 3A from a compatible power supply. Just hook up a 5.1kOhm pulldown resistor between CC and the GND pin and if the voltage over it is about 1.5V you can easily draw 3A from the power supply.

What I've learned from using a USB A-B cable as cheap internal cable: They are quite stiff. This results in high mechanical stress at the thin wires (outside of stripped cable) and especially at the solder joints. That is why I now collect the thinner and much more flexible USB cables like from old mice. :-)

I have not read any of the comments, but I watch a lot of your videos. I am in the middle of so many projects at the moment. Anyway, I watched this a few weeks ago and wanted to give it a go. I had a few problems, but actually have a working system, Next step is making it portable. Anyway, I have been watching your videos for a few years and you have inspired me quite a bit. Any way, I want to say thank you. I can not help financially I can say thank you, and you are doing a great job, and I love your work. I have not had a windows machine in 20 years, as I have been using Linux. There are a few devices or programs that I have that do not run well under Linux or completely. The lattepanda was a cheep solution. Never heard of this device until this video. This is a perfect solution for me. portable. Awesome. All I can say is thank our for inspiring me over the years... You are awesome!!!!

Pretty awesome. I'm surprised you didn't put the battery bank within the case, or use one of those battery controllers to integrate a power source into it, this way it'd be a great portable gaming rig (for retro games), and heck, with a wireless keyboard and mouse, you could use it as a tiny laptop if you need.

For anyone considering this, start with a cheap 8" windows tablet instead. Same processor and ram as the lower end latte panda but includes a screen and battery for less than the cost of the latte panda board on its own. The mainboard is also a lot thinner than the latte panda so you can build something that isn't so thick.
The big benefit of a unit like this over something that runs retropie is the ability to play older PC titles as well. Most games up till about 2003 should run well on a device like this, some even later than that will run depending on how well optimized they are. So far I've successfully run Halo 1, Need for speed underground (1, 2 and most wanted), Morrowind, Unreal Tournament 1 and 2, Simpsons hit and run, GTA 3 and a few others all on this same hardware. Its also terrific on steam link (yes I know you can do that on a PI too).
Here's a link to the build thread for my version of a PC based portable: bitbuilt.net/forums/index.php?threads/diy-concept-ufo.3339/

The project is so fun to make, and I have been planning to so this exact same project since the LATTEPANDA has been out, but after much more thinking, I had to abandon the idea ‘cuz the budget didn’t make any since. It’d cost around $300-$400 to build the system, meanwhile I can buy a well spec’d used laptop with a great battery and just use that for less than half the price (in my case, bigger didn’t mean a problem).
I’d say the project would’ve been better in terms of costs if a RaspberryPi 4 was used instead, you really don’t need a windows machine for retroarch.
As always, great and well made video scott! Well done.

  • @DoctorX17

I ran into a similar power issue with a Raspberry Pi and a display along with some accessories. What I ended up doing was using two USB cables with a DPST switch that would let me turn them both on and off at the same time. Turn the switch on, the screen and Pi would turn on. When you were done, press a button that would run a shutdown command on the Pi, wait for it to finish shutting down, and turn off the power switch.
