- It's been a while since Our MK8 GTI build has been on the channel doing anything super serious! But Garrett sent us their PowerMax Turbo to install so back under the knife it went! Hopefully, this Install video serves some of you well and helps you install this yourself if you so choose to do so!

Man needs a raise solely on mustache performance alone.
😂
Hell yeah. Love the video. Appreciate the time yall took to make this for the community. Will be always buying my parts from you guys, if you let me ride in your supra that is. Deal 😂😂😂😂. No but really. Love your business
Much appreciated!
Great video guys, I have had mine installed for over a week now and its amazing. I also had the same small issues that you came across. But it worked. Line is definitely tight though.
You on the stage 3 tune? How does the power feel? I'm debating to go from 1+ to 3 since I have all the prerequisites installed already.
@@em3460Yes, great drivability and power comes on much stronger mid range. If you have the new Garrett you need to absolutely do Stg 3 tune.
How is the car holding up. have yall been able to do a few pulls. what about reliability. saw anoither post about BMP saying there was metal shavings in there oil lol
What made you go with the Garrett over one of the Hybrid turbos?
@@jakamanewb No hybrid Turbos available yet. only options on my MK8 is the garrett or the continental turbo from the MK8 Golf R. but with the continental it will cost 3K the garrett is 1600 and makes the same power. The reason the Continental cost more is because you need my parts (inlet/outlets are different sizes)
So happy got to see the gti at loe show out in PA but couldnt find you guys 😢
I was walking around like crazy :(
Awesome video!
I was not expecting this turbo design to be any different than the IS20/IS38 design, but there’s actually quite a lot of differences in design here on the MK8. A couple of the oil and coolant lines on the IS20/IS38 turbos, on the MK7/7.5’s, need to be removed and reinstalled both from underneath the car. It’s very difficult to do from the top. This new design looks a lot easier tbh.
Yea it’s quite different overall!
Aside from the differences mentioned above by @JacesOwnWorld will this fit/ be compatible with the Mk7? @@BMPTuning
I really appreciate these types of videos that provide a clear guide for anyone who is willing to tackle this job in their garage, however since I live in NYC I had my mechanic drop this turbo in for me. I've had this turbo in my Audi S3 17' for over a year and it is a valid upgrade from the stock turbo with stage 2 full bolt-ons. The power delivery pulls harder in the mid range, it spools up as soon as the stock but with a high curve, and the top end is night and day in terms of continuous power. I can recommend this to anyone who wants to reach between 460ish hp and 480 ft tq on E85 or 430ish and 450ish hp on 93 oct. I've never dyno'd my car but it is much quicker and stronger than my stage 2 set up. Enjoy the ride my friends!
Garrett rates that turbo at 485 Crank, and 185K RPM. It is highly unlikely you’ll hit 460WHP on any reasonable dyno with a J1349 CF. It’s a 42Lb turbo, and generally speaking you can expect to see approximately 10WHP per lb/min of airflow on pump and 11.5 on an ethanol blend on on average thermal efficiency engine and average drivetrain loss.
You might be able to squeeze a bit more out of it if you want to live dangerously and over speed it and run. High ethanol content, but it’s not going to last long.
Hey @@JordieG8, I completely agree with you. I meant to say to the crank, plus my figures are guesstimations not dyno certified so please take them with grain of salt. I edited my post. I truly appreciate you pointing this out in the hopes that others can have a more reasonable expectation from the Garrett Power Max turbo. Happy Thanksgiving and please enjoy the ride my friend! Cheers! 👍
@@Leo.SKDXL05 no worries. 😉 I have a PMax on my 8V S3 and it made 360 wheel on 93 and just shy of 400 on an E35 blend. For reference it made 250 on the same dyno stock.
The Doberman didn’t care for the cold start at 48 minutes, his nap was definitely cut too short. 😂
He likes his sleep haha
Oh great heavens, I'm early.
Oil on the table great advertising 😂
An oil change is recommended when swapping turbos on any application, these are just the items you would need to properly install the turbo on this vehicle.
Yep gonna have to ship yall my gti when this time comes 😂
We got you!!
The Mk8 has a different PCV valve and hose, which is probably why it didn’t fit well. I’m just waiting for a few parts to retrofit the Mk8 PCV valve on to my 8V S3 which incidentally has a Pmax.
You can just pull on it, it works haha
Small hybrid turbo … for me V5 and the biggest hydride in the market CTs boss 770 with 3076Gtx2😊 that’s I have bay for my MQB R300 5F
Great video. Im in Houston. Dont know any shops here that I trust to do this turbo swap. If I brought my Mk8 GTI to yall is this something yall would do for me? If so Im interested in pricing and what the turn around would be so I can plan around it.
We can get you setup in Houston or here! www.bmptuning.com/pages/installation
The grill bar that comes red how did you get it paint matched? Is there a specific company and or vinyl wrap?
We had it painted :D
Question getting a mk8 gti live in florida i know to use 5w-20. But once i’m stage 2 wouldn’t 5w-20 not be enough for the power it’s putting out and load the engine is going through. Also stage 3 wouldn’t a even more thicker oil be needed like the mk7 they used 5w-40 which made sense
We use OEM recommended viscosities in all of our cars.
I'm having this turbo installed in a few weeks any suggestions on how to connect this turbo to aftermarket charge pipes
We had to modify it quite a bit to work with our APR chargepipes, its not pretty, but its honest work :P
hi guys at BMP!! i was hoping you could answer this question for me......i have this car 2023 GTI SE with the powermaxturbo installed.....my question is---- do i need to spend 2K on the unitronic downpipe for best flow/performance? or is there something else that is as good? ....of course i was hoping on spending a little less, but milltek seems like the only other option, and the street version is only 3" compared to 5" ?? they have a 5" race version i guess but i am, of course, trying to keep this street legal......also i want the best perfomance......am i stuck with the 2K+ unitronic for best of everything? .....thank you !!!
You can run whatever downpipe you want, performance will remain fairly unilateral, the main reason that the Unitronic DP is so much more expensive is because of the catalyst used!
You should be golden with any brand though, let us know if you need anymore help!
I am torn between going with the Garrett or EQT's XL IS38 hybrid!?!? Guys running the EQT XL hybrid are in the low 500WHP range on e85! @JewelCity1 is killing it with his setup...walking down big V8s'! I am currently IE tuned and want to stay that way, but not at the sacrifice of getting ran down by the Hybrid gang! Thoughts?
This is for the MK8, there are no other turbo options outside of the Conti from the MK8 R for the GTI.
As for MK7 info, Garrett does have some options for those or you could always go with the tried and true HPA Hybrid IS38 - its been a solid option for folks.
That pcv hose does not fit! lol I spent two hours trying and no luck! I had to give up on it and will try again tomorrow
it is definitely a pain even after stretching the hose a little bit lol. Good luck!
What type and kind of oil are you using with all these mods? Do you still use 5W30 as VW recommends?
Yup, OE recommendations and OE Filters.
Stock mk8 gti oil is 0w20
I didn’t hear the turbo. More spool noise? Stock Turbo is too quiet 😢
You can hear it through the exhaust
This was uploaded 2 months ago, where is the dyno video?? I’d love to see what it made for power
Breaking in the new motor and then will be on the dyno with this :D
@@BMPTuning new motor?? The motor kapooped after y’all installed the bigger turbo?
What was that airbox brand ?
This is what we've been running most of the MK8s life.

Any ETA on dyno testing with the turbo?
Not yet! We found some sparkly metal in the oil pan... Along with a thrust bearing...
@@BMPTuning when can we expect an update on what happened?
@@BMPTuning Dang this is making me scared to install my powermax turbo.
Anyone here on the uni stage 3 tune with this? How does the power feel?
Not yet, this just dropped not that long ago!
I do! feels pretty solid, with tcu stage 3.
I'd love to go Stage 3, but my TCU is still locked unfortunately. Once it is, I'll be sprinting to Stage 3.
@@tiltedtoken1450 Luckily I dont have that issue. I did have to buy a new clutch though. Just need to commit and buy the turbo now.
Mine feels great Stg 3.
is this on stock internals?
Yes, the motor is completely stock internally!
an now I need to buy a turbo ...
Do you guys happen to know which gaskets the install requires?
We sure do! @Unitronic is releasing a kit very soon, Im sure they will chime in or email us sales@bmptuning.com and we can include them with your turbski!
This video may get watched a few times 😅😅
Hahaha
AlL tHaT MoNeY aNd OnLy 40 WhP??!!! /s
Good video!
It's not always about max HP. Power curve makes a big difference
Lol
He’s referencing another person
Power is up almost 100% with this turbo from stock.
