This apple crisp has browned butter in the crisp topping, giving it a beautiful nutty aroma that complements the apples perfectly.
    Yield: 6-8 servings
    Prep Time: 20 minutes
    Cook time: 45 minutes
    Ingredients
6 cups (900 g) apples (such as Gala, MacIntosh or other sweet, eating apple), peeled and sliced
¼ cup (60 mL) maple syrup
1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla extract
    ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter
    1 ¼ cups (115 g) regular rolled oats
    1/3 cup (50 g) whole wheat flour
½ cup (100 g) packed light brown sugar
1 tsp (5 mL) ground cinnamon
    pinch salt
    Directions
    1. Preheat the oven to 350 F (180 C).
    2. Place the sliced apples in a 6-cup (1.5L) by volume baking dish (any shape). Stir in the maple syrup and vanilla to coat the apples.
    3. Melt the butter in a small saucepot over medium high heat until it browns and takes on a nutty aroma (once the foam subsides, it should be done). Set aside.
    4. Stir the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a mixing bowl. Add the browned butter and stir until blended. Spread this evenly over the apples and bake for about 45 minutes, until the apples yield easily when a paring knife is inserted in the centre of the crisp (the crisp should be bubbling at the edges.) Allow the crisp to cool for 15 minutes before serving.

I’ve made this twice in two weeks; it’s one of the easiest, most delicious bakes one can fix in a snap with very few/basic ingredients. I have been adding a small hand of chopped pecans to the topping and it is so good and crunchy, perfect with the delicious appley gooey goodness.

just finished peeling my apples and figured Id watch a quick refresher recipe. The one thing I do diffent with mine is I add globs of cream cheese mixed with a little vanilla, lemon juice and powdered sugar just under the oat layer. Heavenly, and so buttery delicious.

I live in Western Massachusetts and apple picking season is amping up! The warm, comforting smell ( and taste) of apple crisp just makes fall so special❤️ This is why I love living in the Berkshire’s... the changing seasons and fresh from the tree or vine produce. I am looking forward to your next 101, if you’re planning on having one that is. Every recipe of yours that I have made came out perfect! I even made croissants and puff pastry, which always seemed so scary to me. You gave me confidence and now I am addicted to baking! Thank you chef Anna ❤️

I’m keto, can I use oat fiber , with some almond flour. ? Or maybe King Arthur wheat keto flour. I’m using 6 cups of chayote squash. Flavors and the crisp is important to get right.

I tried this recipe 2 days back.I used a glass pie dish for baking and found that 350 degree Fahrenheit was too low for the apples to be baked.Bubbles started coming out only when i increased the oven temperature to 385 degree Fahrenheit. Also i personally felt that melted butter would have brought a greater flavour than the browned one.

This was easy and delicious. Next time I will add a little lemon to the apples but this was so on point. Very delicious! Thank you so much Anna! This is my new fave! I will try browning butter soon =]

curious. for flavor? or to keep raw apples from turning brown? with cinnamon and cooking, the apples will end up brown anyway so just wondering why you thought this addition would be necessary. thanks!!

What if you put cold butter in the oat mixture instead of browned? Would this make a difference to the end product? Thanks.
