Pancake Day is just around the corner and I have a few recipes for you to give a go that are, of course, totally vegan! Who celebrates Pancake Day around the world? I'm curious if it is a thing everywhere, or do you call it something else to mark the start of Lent?

I’m so excited to try it this way! I just made some last night with the normal British pancakes with a nut milk and aquafaba for the eggs. I liked them but my hubby wasn’t a fan. He still wants the normal ones. I’ll try this way and see if I can get him to change his mind.

In Poland we have Fat Thursday, which is lat day of the carnival. Historically, it was the day when people where eating everything from the pantry before the Lent, so lots of fatty, sweet and salty things. Today we mostly eat lots of donuts and fried cookies.

In Sweden we eat a Semla on tuesday. Arla, the Company that makes the plant milk Jörd has a contest each year to see which bakery makes the best one, and this year a vegan one was in the lead, but Arla didn't like that a vegan semla was winning, so they called off the entire contest. (Despite making a plantbased product, they actually hate veganism). The whole thing was super embarassing for them. It was named semmelgate in the media. (But seriously, try a Semla some time, they're delicious)

We have Fasching/Karneval in Germany (at least in the southern parts of Germany) where we eat some sort of Doughnuts wich have different names in different regions. In some regions they are called Pfannkuchen (literally pancakes). In other regions they are called Berliner, Kreppel, Krapfen and many more.

In Austria next Tuesday is called "Faschingsdienstag". "Fasching" is the Austrian word for Carneval. And we it "Krapfen", which are kind of like a filled doughnuts without a hole. In Austria Pancakes are called "Palatschinken" and they have to be super thin like crepes. Now I want Palatschinken 😁😋

Pancakes on vastenavond (fasting evening) tuesday are also a thing in the Netherlands but my family didn't do it every year because of how hectic carnaval gets and how much effort it is too make pancakes for 6. I'll definitely be doing it this year though. And my favourite filling is probably baked apple slices with cinnamon and sugar. Or stroop (this thick syrup that we get in the Netherlands). Also: grating yellow zucchini into the the batter was one of my mom's favourite hidden veg hacks.

In Belarus (in Ukraine and Russia too) we have pagan holiday called Maslenitsa. It's celebrated during the whole week before The Lent and everyday you eat pancakes (not only pancakes, of course). And in the end of this week there is great celebration with burning the straw man or actually straw woman as a representation of the winter that going away and invitation of spring (in Belarusian and Russian languages word for winter has feminine gender).
I am not religious at all but I love this holiday, when I was a child this was pretty fun.
This year Maslenitsa's week will start March 8th if I'm not mistaken.

It's officially called Shrove Tuesday! Its the day before Lent starts (Ash Wednesday) and its meant to be so that you use up everything in your cupboard before the 40 days of fasting for Lent (Christian holiday) to mimic jesus and prepare for easter. Nowadys its not really a big religious thing and most people just choose to give up 1 or 2 things like chocolate or meat for 40 days and have a big family meal on Easter Sunday :)

Fresh lemons are the only way! You could try gluten free oats for the 3 ingredient pancakes, these could be a better replacement to gluten free flour! xx

Even though I have seen tons of recipes for vegan pancakes I guess...american style? like, the thick ones, this is the first time I see vegan crêpes! you can‘t imagine how happy I am, because I grew up eating crêpes and never really cares for pancakes

Those recipes look incredibly tasty and thank you so much for sharing, you're such an amazing chef! But please, noooooo fresh strawberries in winter time, you influence so many people here, and they have to know that stawberries is a summer fruit... It is SO important that people start eating through the flow of seasons for the future of our planet. All the best 🌻

I think we Germans took it to the next level. We have six days of Karneval before the fasting time. It starts on Thursday (Weiberfastnacht) which nowadays is mostly a girls thing with parties and all (Weiber is an old word for women). There is also a tradition that every man who dares to go to the office with a tie on Weiberfastnacht gets it cut off. Friday to Sunday we have parades and masquerades, in West Germany the people on the parades throw all sorts of candies into the cheering crowds (kids easily end up with 2-5 kg of candy and chocolate). The parades are also used the mock politicians and literally make fun of everyone and everything. We go to masquerade parties and eat lots of very fatty foods similar to donuts and drink beer. Monday (Rosenmontag) is the peak day with a huge parade in different cities of Germany. I am from Cologne, a very catholic but fun city, and Karneval has been the biggest thing of the year for ages. Other cities may only celebrate Monday and Tuesday but Colognian kids get freed from school Thursday afternoon till Tuesday and most offices only pretend to work if they don’t close all together ^^
Also thank you so much for the flat pancake recipe! My mum used to make these for me all the time and I never found a good vegan recipe.

Yum! Raised Catholic here in Canada, it was Shrove Tuesday and Mom put coins in our pancakes. I still do it for my kids however nowadays it’s more expensive because Canada has $1 and $2 coins. 😂

These look yummy, can't wait to try the crepes!! Fluffier pancakes are the norm in the U.S. but I've been missing crepes. Love your mixing bowl! Would you please link where it's from?
