Running uphill at considerably steep hills will usually be faster than biking. Whenever I'm trail running I'll overtake MTB riders on the uphill sections as well. Of course, they just blaze past me on the downhills. :) Fair play though, in my experience trail runners and MTB riders get along famously and understand when and where to give each other space. For some reason that just doesn't work with road riders. :(
You really need them grippy shoes though.

Fun video but the word, "fairplay" was tossed around an awful lot for an event where the top two finishers had the obvious benefit of an additional power source.

I think that was the most impressive part about it. He beat two bikes by quite a landslide. And only 2 minutes off from the e-bikes? That's fast!

But if you’re talking about that roadie guy, he could’ve ridden his bike on a lot of parts on this climb, it seems he just doesn’t know how to ride a bicycle.
The lowest gear definitely is low enough to get up the gravel parts of that hill, but he choose to bitch about it and carry his bike,

Im fine with E bikes, and i will get one in 5 years when they the tech and production are mature, but when im riding one, i won't pretend its anything but a moped.
It was good to see the pain on the ebikers at the top, it’s assisted but still hard work, and putting a gravel bike on the route was just silly, fair play to Ollie for even turning up. Well impressed with Mark using just his legs, he wasn’t even blowing at the end. And Rich on mtb without an engine did well too.
Right, to even this up a bit let’s have the same race on a fire road for the same height climb, I know Steve would love that 😀
It's all to do with cadence on ebikes, They all have maximum cadence power output, Some more than others, But all have a limit.. And when you are tackling inclines as fast as you can you are gonna reach that limit and beyond, Equalling more effort coming from you. Basically, If the emtbs took it at at a steady pace with the right gears thus keeping within the cadence limit, It wouldn't be hard work.. But then it wouldn't be a race lol
oh please. the runner and riders are in much better shape as a result of not having a crutch. the fact that the eBikers were in "pain" speaks more about how out of shape they are not to them earning the top of the hill through pain

Fully on side with Ollie on this one, that climb is an absolute bastard. I always push up it and I'm not exactly unfit (KOM holder down the other side...), it's not rideable by the vast majority. If you all weren't calling Jones the C-word before you were after that.
Loved it, more of this please, poor Olie put me off buying a gravel bike though not as capable is everyone make then out to be, sticking to rigid mtb. Respect to the runner and XC bike no assistance needed!!

I thought the runner could win. They overtook me several times on climbs with my non-EMTB. So I think on a more difficult terrain a good runner would win an EMTB too.
Pair of trainers are cheap and don’t require maintenance
Though that sort of climb definitely does not favour a (non electric) mountain bike

On ebikes it is so weird because the more effort you put in the less the motor works so its best if you don’t put a lot of effort in so you will go faster

I think someone needs to tell Ollie that the definition of bikepacking is not carrying the bike up an entire route. There might even be some videos on the GCN channel if he needs the help.

@@mochidomo Indeed. The current 625Wh packs just keep on going, especially on terrain where a "real" mtb can still go, and you're only using tour or low-emtb mode.

A great climb...one I've done on the loop . It's very very tough so thumbs up to anyone who could climb it on a non Ebike. That was the real achievement. On my climb as I reached the top a group of walkers cheered me with congratulations only to retract that when saw the motor and call out cheat. It's still a bloody tough climb on a ebike... especially if trying to preserve range.

That was great loved ollies comments at the top . And Steve that means carls dinner at erzberg is gravel because its just very large gravel pieces. I agree its tecniccally is gravel if its rock ha ha . My tip was on the runner winning. I started mtb ing 40 years ago chasing world class marathon runners and man they were fast on those muddy walking trails back when i was just a boy.

As a motorcyclist, I wholeheartedly welcome e-MTBs. I bought an e-MTB instead of a dirtbike because MTB trails are much easier to access and numerous than dirtbike trails where I live, e-MTBs are also legal on MTB trails here. MTB trails are also narrower and more technical than dirtbike trails so you get the same thrill going at a slower speed, and if you crash or fall the injuries are less severe. I also feel more confident riding over rocks, roots and hitting jumps/drops on a 50 lb e-MTB compared to a 300 lb dirtbike. Unlike dirtbikes that require significant retrofitting to be made road legal, and title, registration and insurance on top of that, I can simply ride my e-MTB to the trails. If the trail is too far to ride, e-MTB is much easier to transport than a dirtbike.
Would like to see Si ride up there on a gravel bike. Itd amazing what they can do

How about a version at Bike Park Wales. GCN Gravel bike up the gravel road, GMBN up Beast of Burden, EMBN and GTN up the e-Bike climb. But race also includes the descent, with GCN coming down a blue, GTN running down a footpath, EMBN and GMBN coming down a mix of red and black.
All brilliant except for including motorised transport. You should also include a motorbike in there if you’re going this way.
Ollie really reinforces my conclusion that a gravelbike is NOT a true allrounder. It s just another road bike.
