    this carlsen guy...again ...that rhythm, his game is fun to watch. The moves he makes look better than chess engine... look how the knight rides around covering the board and clearing the threats, the king closing in with the bodygaurds... its like a nice action movie. Its just a goood game to watch.

    ive noticed what separates GMs from the rest of us is that they never stick to classic strategies that tell you which pieces to keep such as keeping the rooks at all costs in the end games, crazy how he was able to calculate giving up his rook knowing hed get it back

      Yes mine went from 0.33 to 12.5. Rook needed to stay on first rank (after gxh5 Rxh5 it has left first rank) and either harass the king with checks or pressure the b pawn from behind (depending on where the white N goes). It seems to be a draw according to GM Stockfish. (Carlsen even said in his interview that Black could probably hold draw but it was very tricky).

    Your way of explaining these chess games is really good. I hardly play chess but when i do i always think of make the best moves without drawing to much risk. But the styles of gameplay im seeing just takes it over the edge, along with you opinions of how the game could been in the opposite favor had a different move been played instead. Well done. +1 sub

      Well, to be fair, if we're not talking professional level competition, there are coed sports, like indoor soccer. I've played a good amount of coed indoor soccer. It's definitely a LOT easier against the girls lol

    I mean this isn't a super fair comparison as Magnus has been the world champion since 2013, and has achieved the highest FIDE rating in history, while Yifan has never crossed the 2700 super-grandmaster threshold. The last time she was even top 60 was in 2015.

    I actually felt like Yifan was doing really well, and that sac allowed Carlson to be more aggressive, but wasn't thaaaat beneficial in the long run imo. It was more Carlson outplaying Yifan in the endgame I feel.

    That rook for bishop trade was pivotal. Carlsen could just "sense" that the positional gain was worth much more than the material

    Actually before h5 by hou ifan, the engines evaluate the position at 0.05 at depth 40, rd1 was the move that leads to draw with correct play, magnus said she could have held after the match and even the commentators acknowledged after the game that rd1 would have drawn with correct play, I am just saying this as you said magnus had winning position, which by engine eval he didnt at that point :)

      This is true. The h5 pawn move by Hou is what made her lose, but MC did make it rather easy for her to do a wrong move and hard to do the right. I wouldn't know what to do in that position either. Hou should work on her end-game, as it seems that is where she suffers every game this tournament.

      Håkon of course it's tough position but I just say it's not winning, anyway I am crap player I understand the basic principle of why it can draw when shown but I couldn't draw it against a grandmaster obviously! But many grandmaster could draw that there it's why mc said after game it was probably draw.....

      It doesn't. There are two types of tournaments, women's tournaments, and tournaments for everyone. But only men win the tournaments that everyone can play in.

    Can anyone explain to me why when white moved the g pawn to g4 at 8:18, instead of moving the rook to h1, why not move it back to g2 to capture the g pawn? The white knight would no longer be able to defend it, the white pawn has nowhere to run, and the rook is not yet needed to keep the white h pawn from queening.

      Most woman players only keep to themselves, and so when the best woman players are rated below 2600, it's not like they will all of a sudden go 2750 or something. :p It's like if MC was to go 2950 when the best players barely hit 2800 once in a while. After Hou won woman champ, she's been playing in open, and so her rating has grown ahead of the other woman players too. Honestly, this is what all the best woman players should do if they want to up their game, but they are incentivized to play woman only tournaments, because they are easier to win, and they often have good prizes to encourage woman players to play.

    at 4:31 can Carlsen play nc6+?
    because if bishop captures, carlsen's bishop cuts the king off and limits Yifan's rook on A8 to moving only c8
    If Yifan moves his king you get a rook but if she doesnt your a much better position than black can someone analyze this?
