Replacing Honda Mower transmission HXEA/HMEA/HRX537/(Harmony USA)

  • My Honda Mower after only 3 years became sluggish and there was a grinding noise from the transmission, on taking it to a Dealer for a service I was told that there was a small oil leak from the transmission and it could not be repaired, they said that it would cost 600 Euros for a new transmission! I found a new one 'On-Line' from Lawnmowerpros.com in America for 173.95 Dollars and fitted it myself. I have never done this sort of thing before but all went well.

    I ordered a new transmission as the clutch was worn out. I was worried not knowing how to replace the transmission. I found this you-tube video which is the exact model as mine. Thanks for this video as I now have a complete step by step video of how to do the job. This is the best help video I have ever seen. You should sell this video to Honda customer service!!!

    Thank you for producing a very helpful video. I've just had to perform a similar disassembly to replace a snapped transmission cable (original nipple design which can't be simply unhooked). The most difficult part was removing the blade nuts, which had probably been overtightened when serviced. It took a 750mm breaker bar to undo them.
    A couple of comments:-
    You don't need to remove the scroll handle or petrol tank because you uncouple the linkage when you remove the nut at around 9:30.
    For extra safety, it's advisable to disconnect the HT lead from the spark plug. This further reduces the possibility of the engine firing when you're removing the blades.

    I found this video invaluable for replacing the transmission in my HRX217HXA mower, especially since I didn’t have a service manual. I set up my laptop in the garage and played/paused the video as I went step by step through the process. Thanks for this extremely helpful and well done video and I truly appreciate you putting it together and posting it here.

    Great video. Thank you for taking the time to post. I noticed on reassembly that, if I am not mistaken, you placed the curved washer on the gear shaft instead of the wheel shaft. 2:22 shows you pulling it from the wheel shaft originally. Not sure if it made a difference to the operation, but just thought to point that out. Thanks again for the great video.

    Great video, helped me a lot in giving me insight in to what was needed to get my transmission out. My 537 was 2nd hand and 2007 model, and the rear adjusters were seized solid, made the job last a day longer than required. I washed mine out, new seals, topped up with new oil, and away it went (it was bone dry).
    Everything greased/anti sneezed upon re-assembly, hopefully get a few more years out of her.
    I have similar work loafers, great to work in, warm, comfortable, and can sneak indoors to make a tea without taking them off.

    • @dieselhatz4247
      @dieselhatz4247 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      M Gomez I couldn’t dissemble the rear axle as it was all seized together, that’s why it took a day longer. Couldn’t reuse the adjusters, soaked them in Plus Gas (penetrating oil) and they wouldn’t unstick, so got new OEM ones, new washers, circlips, the lot on the rear axle.
      My hydrostatic gearbox I washed out, put new seals in and topped up with new oil, and it worked and hasn’t leaked yet either. Those boxes ain’t cheap new.
      All parts in, it was cheaper then buying a decent condition one and certainly cheaper than a new one.

    • @johncollins8304
      @johncollins8304 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You had seized adjusters -- I had one seized, was able to remove and separate, wire-wheeled thin coat of spray paint, lightly greased, replaced, no big problems. The I thought I might as well do the other one which is just difficult but not impossible t o move. Bad decision ! I can't get the gear shaft out far enough to replace the circlip even without the washer!! Removed wheel from other side to do a visual check ...maybe I put one of the two thick spacers on the wrong side of the circlip... Here's me thinking on the sofa... So I thought I'd open the mysterious box oops..oil dirty oil comes out. So start researching that. No drain plug. So I thought there'd just be grease inside.
      What this guy (who is "not a mechanic"!!) has done is incredible. Ah, well...

    This repair may need to be done on my mower in the near future. The mower used to practically run away from me when the speed lever was pushed forward. Now I’m practically pushing it and there’s a grinding noise developing when the self prop is engaged. So it’s either spend the little money and time to do what you did or just get a whole new mower.

    This is a magnificent video. I've now read all thecomments and replies. I'm only here because I started removing the four bolts on the magic box (transmission); there was no drain bolt so I ASSumed it was packed with grease. Wrong!! A few spoonfuls of dirty nasty oil came out, so I came online to find out how to change the oil. OH, boy! And I only thought of opening it to find out why my rod had shrunk: I removed and cleaned the adjusters which were hard/impossible to move -- on the second one, short for into magic box, I couldn't see the groove for the circlip! Maybe I put one of the two spacers at the other end on the wrong side of the circlip...?
    Anyway, I see that despite your sterling effort here you are not prepared for an encore to replace the belt. As someone commented sarcastically about Honda -- "We make it simple"!

    Your instructions were great. Replacement transmission had smaller pulley, and I assumed it might have different gear ratios as mower is over 9 years old so I put it on anyway. All parts fit well except getting last circlip on is tough. I get no movement at lo speed. I think cable at max setting. How can I be sure? Also, when trying to turn mower both rear wheels act like there is no differential. Is that correct? Don't remember it that way. Guess I need a little more

    Took my HRX 537 out for a spin this morning and straight away noticed that it was pulling to the left. Got my spanners out and took the drive wheels, the gears and the bits and pieces apart, noticing that they were in need of a good cleaning and greasing. Put everything back together and got into a bit of a tizzy about which way the small gear went.
    First attempt and the machine wouldn't propel forward. Tried again, assuming the right hand wheel, as viewed from the rear was the problem because I hadn't been using my eyes when I stripped it down.
    Turned the gear round and the machine propelled forward. Sorted, I thought, but back on the grass the machine still wanted to turn anti clockwise circles. Called it a day and went for my tea, thinking perhaps the left hand gear is the wrong way round.
    That was when I saw your first rate video.
    I will look at my machine again on a rainy day with a view to getting it to move in a straight line but in the meantime, Mackenzie, or anyone else, I would appreciate and comments you may have on my attempts so far.
    Thankyou,
    Jim. West Yorks.

      TO LOOSEN THE BOLTS USE HEAT TO BREAK THE RUST , BE CAREFUL NOT TO PUT THE MOWER ALIGHT . ON THE GEAR THAT YOU MAY HAVE THERE ARE PUNCH MARKS ON THEM , ON THE GEAR NEAR THE TRANNY THE PUNCH MARK GOES TOWARDS THE TRANNY , ON THE OTHER SIDE THE PUNCH MARK IS DIRECTED AWAY FROM THE TRANNY . THIS WILL PUT THE WHEELS IN THE CORREC ORBIT . YOU MAY BE ABLE TO USE A HAMMER DRILL WITH AN ADAPTER FOR THE SOCKET TO FIT ON .USE CREATIVE WORKS GOOD LUCK

      Hi, I have a 26 year old Honda and I have never changed the filter on that just cleaned it! My 537 is around five years old, I paid €70 Euros for a service and noticed that they hadn't bothered to change or clean the filter so I just cleaned it.

    Mackenzie, a poster below stated "You indeed installed the 3 speed gear driven transmission non-hydro(20001-VH7-003). Glad it worked. Original transmission for that mower which has the hydro drive is part#(04200-VH7-315) as stated above."
    There is a huge price difference between the two units; some $120 US.
    I guess it worked for you since your post is some 8 years old. Did you indeed find that you only had 3 speeds vs. 5?

    • @mackenzierough
      @mackenzierough  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't really notice as it ran much the same but I didn't a have so much control on the variable speed control lever, just ran it at full speed which I had been doing before anyway. About two years ago the main drive belt came off the pulley but I couldn't be bothered to fix it as it needed to be taken apart again! I'm not very impressed with this expensive mower. I have an old Honda mower that still works fine after 30 years!!!

    • @jjparody8257
      @jjparody8257 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mackenzierough Thank you. I kind agree; the HRX line is over-engineered imo. When you say "ran it at full speed which I had been doing before anyway," do you mean you previously ran it all the way up on the 5 speed? That speed for me (average man) was way too fast, I usually ran it about a notch above halfway for a comfortable pace. Was "full speed for you" on the replacement transmission comfortable or more of a sprint?

    • @mackenzierough
      @mackenzierough  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be quiet honest it was such a long time ago I'm not sure if I ran it at full speed when new but after replacing the transmission full speed was a comfortable speed.

    great video, very informative, but a lot of time and money could have been saved by, replacing the 2 drive shaft oil seals, 50p each, topping up the gearbox with hydrolic oil, then bleeding the system

      @2705ok 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nicolas Dzimira to top up the hydrolic oil, put the machine on its side air filter up, on the gear box you will see 2 drain/filler plugs,
      un screw the upper 1 using an allen key top up oil then rotate the rear wheel which is in the air, this will bring the air bubbles to the top repeat as nessasery
