  • After three years of unprecedented drought, the South African city of Cape Town has less than 90 days worth of water in its reservoirs, putting it on track to be the first major city in the world to run out of water. Unless residents drastically cut down on daily use, warns Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille, taps in the seaside metropolis of four million will soon run dry. On April 22, to be exact.

      In Cape Town we stand together. In the spirit of Ubuntu we have had other provinces delivering water to us, and we continue to save as far as we can. We are also stockpiling water and we have learnt to live with not more than 50litres per person, per day. I don't think I will ever be able to flush the loo with drinking water ever again. This experience has taught us how we have abused this resource over the years.

    My city is located in a desert, we have very little money, buy the government manage to put a desalination plant on the beach.
    Also we start capturing the morning mist and recycling the water from the sink to flush.
    And all the water from the sewer gets processed and reuse for farming.
    it doesn't rain, ever.

    Since I live in South Africa. I think we are doing basically nothing... Mostly the government. 60 percent of Cape Town's people waste water. However, since we gave almost half a million rand to a dairy farm you would say that the government also wastes water in their own way. If you are reading this.. And you live in Cape Town... Don't let this happen...

      @tanszism 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nah, water isn't really disappearing. The only problem is that due to global warming more and more is getting "stuck" as vapour rather than liquid. Not to mention heavy pollution which destroys the ability to drink from it without proper equipment. Us in the first world will most likely never have this problem. If we ever do and all rivers suddenly run dry we can still drink ocean water after getting the salt out of it by boiling it and collecting the steam. It's not difficult, nor is it that expensive. Just really uncomfortable. Cape Town is in a terrible situation due to the government turning a blind eye. This is political warfare, not really a problem we are facing RIGHT NOW.

    Okay to all y’all that don’t live in SA, let me inform you bluntly.
    We can’t do desalination as the extra salt would damage the sea if thrown back in.
    We have implemented reverse osmosis but that is only able to produce 2L per hour so it only helps barely.
    We are sending up to 30 000L within the next few days from the other provinces and the economic hub I.e Johannesburg. (The other major city)
    We are doing our best and has nothing to do with the government. We’ve implemented water restrictions throughout and constantly ensured the efficient use of water but three years of drought adds up.
    So please don’t judge or make any comments if you don’t know what’s happening. Media doesn’t post everything, just the nitty gritty.

      Thank you for this information: I am one who would suggest water de-sanilization as a measure to obtain potable water. If your city can only obtain 2L per hour, your technology can certainly use an upgrade.
      That said, I'm pretty certain that Cape Town was founded because the location had access to freshwater in rivers, lakes or wells. How is the maintenance (or repair) of the ecosystem that maintains the water supply to the city?
      There is no easy answer to the water shortage problem (which is GLOBAL), and this affects anyone, anywhere: there have been water shortages in the US as well as other countries. And if the data collected by the UN is anything to go by, this will only escalate in the coming years.
      Local desertification and soil imperbilization play a huge contributing factor, but so does global weather models. There are many factors to take into consideration.

  • @earthandwind820
    @earthandwind820 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I lived through a less severe drought in Puerto Rico (Caribbean) about a year and a half ago and it really teaches you to control your water supply and appreciate running water.
    The government would control the water in certain parts of the island by either shutting it off every other day or at certain time intervals.
    I hope a solution can be reached for the people of Cape Town!

    • @tanszism
      @tanszism 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The thing is back in the roman days water was an actual RESOURCE. Not really something so wildly available as from taps. Nowadays most people really undervalue water. Though, it's not really Cape Town's fault, moreso the governing body. They have left the town to their own resources due to political friction. This so-called watercrisis happened to other cities there before, but Cape Town voted for the opposition. In a semi-tyranny, you vote for the opposition you get help from the opposition, not from the government. And since the opposition party can't do much, tough luck for them.

      Yep, except for the fact the Roman empire fell to shambles from the inside corruption and massive amount of debt, along with barbarians invading them from all sides. They then became two empires and one of them died off and the other became a Muslim empire that no longer exists. By the way, they did NOT supply water for all of their citizens, many citizens starved and lived in terrible conditions while aristocrats spent their days paying money to watch people die in arenas.

And the "rich" tax payers suffer because they pay fines and the poor who don't pay tax don't pay the fines even if they use water unfairly. I live in Cape Town. I use Grey water for just about everything. Two minutes showers and the water that is used falls into a tub which goes to flushing toilets and washing floors.

    This problem could be prevented if the government aware of the problem since 1 decade ago by installing sea water desalination plant using reverse osmosis technology like Israel.
    Israel is the first nation on earth sucessfully applying this technology nationwide.
    Now Israel had so much surplus fresh water that they even export it to other nation, and had plentiful of it to boost their agricultural sector and became a major agricultural export nation in the middle east and north Africa despite most of Israel itself is desert and small in size.
    But all of that is depends on South African political will to make it happen.

  • @Deontjie
    @Deontjie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Cape Town will run dry on 22 April. Maybe you should have said Cape Town can run dry on 22 April. But then you did not specify a year. Because we had the exact same prediction last year. I know the situation is getting worse. But seems like you not well informed. Steenbras Dam is still full. And I can not see that tham emptying in three months. Remember Steenbras do get rain out of the strong South-Easter.

    • @Deontjie
      @Deontjie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Steenbras Lower dam has a small hydroelectricity that generate power from the out-flowing water. That power is only used for the water treatment plant. Then there are four big generators using water from Upper Steenbras dam. Flowing into the Kaapse Draai reservour. This water used to be in a loop, wasting no water. Since the new water treatment plant at Faure (for the Khayelitsha residents) was build, this water does not flow back at night. Now this water flows through the generators, into Kaapse Draai reservoir, and then to the treatment plant, and then to the end users. So no extra water was, or will ever be used for generating electricity. This dam is not huge, and the City of Cape Town is massive. But at least there is a continuous inflow of water into this dam. And there is another hydroelectricity generator between Rockview dam and Kogelbergdam, about 5 km away. Here the water gets used for generating power to satisfy peak demands. Then the water gets pumped back up during times of low usage. Cape Town do not rely on this power, it is only used to flatten peak demands. Remember, Steenbras do get rain out of the South Easter wind during the hot summer months.

    I get by on 3 gallons/day, just like astronauts do.
    Nobody should be using a flush toilet. Everybody should deal with poop like soldiers do when they are on the march: dig a hole, poop into it, and then cover it up. Don't forget to cover it up. And mark the spot so that you don't dig in the same place again until 3 years have passed.
    Nobody should be using automatic dishwashers or automatic laundry washers. Wash things by hand. If dish washing is not delayed, a simple rinse and hand wipe will clean it. Clothes don't really need to be washed often, either. Wear them dirty, until they're really dirty.
    Nobody should be taking immersive baths or showers. A sponge or rag bath will take care of your smelliest bits, and it only takes a pint of water.

    • @Jenab7
      @Jenab7 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      NOT IF YOU BURY IT. Take a shovel, dig down 18 inches (that's quite sufficient for a small bucket of poop), dump the bucket, backfill by replacing the dirt.
      Sure open defecation, with the feces left unburied, does lead to the spread of diseases. But people living in the countryside prior to the 20th century usually did exactly what I suggested.

The animals will be wiped out in a week and you aren't going to grow anything in a drought. You'd die without the food you get that was processed by people living in...yes, cities.

      Let's also ask the DA why we have a water crisis in the DA lead Cape town, which would've been completely manageable had the proper plans been put in place earlier- or is everything the black government's fault?

    • @shaunmadumbo6863
      @shaunmadumbo6863 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Hishaam Fakier Yes that's right. It's the collective government's responsibility to ensure stable water supply from local to national. Let's not make it political.

      The economy is continuing to grow. More people have access to sanitation and a permanent home now than at any point in the country's history. Crime levels - yes they are a bit scary - but they reflect the ongoing levels of inequality in the country. As soon as the government attempt to put in place any plans to address that inequality, though, the global financial speculators go crazy and scream that hardline socialists have taken over government, rather than acknowledging the necessity of redressing hundreds of years of imbalance and injustice to allow the country to function in a way that benefits all of its people. It's a complex country, for sure, but it sure as hell isn't ruined. And no, it isn't 'politically incorrect' to ask, just ill informed.

      sign before judgement day in islam:
      "When the antichrist (dajhal) first appears, a day will feel as long as a year, then as long as a month and finally a day will feel as long as a week. Three years before his appearance, the sky will hold off one-third of its water, a year after it will hold off two-thirds of its water, then one year before his appearance it will hold off all of its water."

      You havent the slightest idea my dear white friend. We have to look a certain way to get opportunities. We need to dress for the job we want and potray a certain image to get ahead. You dont know where I sleep at night. Finally, I do not see how your response makes sense to the statement I made. Read with understanding, but I am suspecting you are just pushing your own agenda. what you are basically saying is "not alllack people"

    • @tlm5830
      @tlm5830 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Because it is. You wont get it or see it though. When you are in front you dont see anyone behind you. Your reality is what is next toyou and in front of you.

      Tebogo Mokgomogane I look at merit, values, and actions before all else. Anyone who uses race as a crutch is pathetic. Sorry if judging someone on their character rather on their race is _somehow_ racist.
      And in South Africa, the "colonial oppression" card is being used to justify genocide. If you justify genocide in any way of any group, then I already know enough about you.
