  • Problems have plagued the US Census Bureau in recent decades.
    Learn how the census definition of race has changed over time: bit.ly/2s5gWN2
    The 2020 census was added to the Government Accountability Office’s list of programs with a high-risk of failure. And failing to accurately count the population would threaten the integrity of the country’s most authoritative dataset that drives public policy.
    Because the census is used in for a myriad of democratic functions, it’s important that the US gets it right. But now the Department of Justice has proposed to change the 2020 form, which could create further problems for the bureau.

    So instead of using our taxes for stadiums owned by private parties and we don't get any financial benefits from maybe they can add that towards the census. Also tbh people are very unengaged in these important stuff. They don't even bother lobbying their politicians yet care about census so it's shared blame between institutions and people.

      Well I mean there are no slaves so it wouldn’t really change anything. Do you really want the already slow congress to take even more time to resolve something that would literally change nothing? I don’t disagree in a perfect world but this is America and if you want congress to say murder is wrong it will take them 6-8 months to sort everything out and make a decision.

      Roland Lytle well there is a different solution to that. Stop financing schools based on cendus, local district population etc.
      Finance school by enrolled student. That is easy enough to know. Then move the funding to say state level. After that knowing exactly local district population, local tax base etc. will be no issue.
      You count pupils in attendance and state government finances school districts based on how many pupils they serve. More students more money, less students less money. Where the school is or whatvkind of tax base the local area has or does one know the district population would be of no importance.
      Pupils served is anyway the most sensible basis of financing a school. It is directly related to expenses occurred. If you bring financing to state level, that has enough economy of scale. Just decide "each school in this state regardless of location, local population etc. gets X dollars per school year per pupil enrolled in school."
      Simple and effective, easy to verify against fraud (go see if students in school matches the number school reports). No costly population counts needed for that.

    I am confused as to why 4 people living in one house counts as 4 households? In Australia our census is based on who lives in your house, that is a household. You simply state that the household relationships. So in my household there are two housemates that are a couple and another housemate.

    • @mydearfriendheather1931
      @mydearfriendheather1931 6 ปีที่แล้ว +106

      I think a house hold is considered in a tax way. So even when I lived with a friend and her daughter i was a household to myself because I wasn't supporting her or her daughter financially. I could be wrong though. But its dumb how many definitions of a household we americans have. Because in that same situation, I was counted as in her daughters household and caused her to receive less disability.

    • @EmPulse

      4 adults living in a household (no dependents) = 4 households. 4 people living in a house, including depedents = less than 4 households. They only briefly touched on it but a household is basically the term for a family. I live with 2 roomates but our houseold isn't 1 because we aren't dependent on each other (technically it's not a household at all because we're still consideres dependents of our parents)

    • @razor191919
      @razor191919 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

If you and I were roommates, both 26 and you had a partner and child, you would be one household with two depends and I would be one household of myself. You do realise this is how the brits started nearly all colonies right. india for example
      Start trading with them, get favours from local Indian leaders, get access to ports start trading, buy up huge parts of land, buy rights to minerals etc. Bring in troops to help protect merchants, continue to do favours for local leaders, continue to expand.
      Intervene in local affairs help fight nearby threats, get rewarded with more land more rights to minerals, end up earning more from region then putting in.
      Colonialism wasn't done by the sword but by politics and the coin. Now eventually once set up they grew armies to "protect their investments", recruited locals and governed.
      A lot of what at least the brits and dutch did was very similar to what chinas doing now. Some colonial empires took a less subtle approach, but the most successful one did it with money and favours to the local leaders.

    • @XavianBrightly

Basically we need to end parties and even a calling people liberal conservative ect as it hurts the US. Casey smith If there will become one party then it will become one sided. Literally. We wouldn’t have these two competitors at the very end, giving their all to see who gets the job. Also these two (or three) people would be the only choices for voters. If you had one party then you would have like 10 people running at the very end and when one gets elected the other people would get mad (I am assuming that roughly 70% of the nation would get mad) then that person could possibly resign. Also we have two parties because there are some stuff that people would wholeheartedly agree and that there would be no way to bring it “to the middle”.

    I wss a census taker in 2010. I faced some clearly right wing guy answering his door with a gun to my face, someone sending their large dogs to chase me, and finding an old rotting trailer that had a body inside (I didn't see the body - but the odor was intense and I was instructed to call the police). From my understanding what I faced wasn't considered super rare. That's just the way that the job went. I was proud to do that job, but the future of the census really does worry me.

    If they change it so only “certain” people are counted, maybe it would make some groups feel a lot better about their place in the country, regardless of what the true data says. Theres a tendency to skew the methodology towards what people want to believe, rather than what is actually true. Seems like theres a bit of denial that the Boomers are no longer the largest voting demographic in the country, or the primary economic force.

    The census question on race/ethnicity should be taken off the census. In 1942, the federal government illegally used census information to round up people of Japanese descent. This was sanctioned by the Supreme Court at the time. Partisan politicians use this information to gerrymander legislative and congressional districts, move polling places to make them less accessible to minorities and red line neighborhoods for things such as improving infrastructure and obtaining loans. Ask yourself, are you in the group they will come for next? Since 1980, I have answered this question on the census form by checking the box labeled "other" and then writing "Human" on the line next to it. There is only one race, the HUMAN RACE.

      Well the debate was that the Southern States didnt hold the large populations of Free men like in the north, in the north you had more population overall than in the South and a ton less slaves. To give the Southern states some power they decided on the "three fifths of a person" rule where Slaves were counted towards the population but only three fifths of the person, this greatly increased the representation of the Southern States in the US House of Representatives, now this is important because by the time of the Civil War in some southern states their were more slaves than free men.

    Why can’t you count birth certificates minus death certificates? Government has so many records: driving licenses, tax records, voting records, etc. why can’t we just put all that together in a data warehouse and use an algorithm to interpret the data for the census?

    • @beth4554
      @beth4554 6 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      Michael Kirschner while that might work to determine our population it would not solve what a census is meant to do. The census determines how many people are living in certain regions which then helps determine the lines drawn for political representation. Using driver licenses would also be inaccurate because in large cities most people don't have a license or one that is valid. While it may work in theory there are too many outside unknowns to use a blanket algorithm like that.

    • @personncfdhbhbv
      @personncfdhbhbv 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That would only count people already in the US system. That leaves a lot of people out, including undocumented immigrants (whose deaths would count towards death #s but not birth #s and who arent in the system anywhere else). Undocumented citizens may fill out the census now because it doesn't ask about status so there's no threat, but if added, they would be likely reluctant to answer. So yeah, it's more complicated than just counting numbers that already exist

      +Danny Gamez His name was Thomas Paine, and there is no record of him ever saying that; the earliest record of that term was by Gary Strand, in the 1990s. It is true, however, that the Founding Fathers of the USA were suspicious of democracy, because they understood it about as well as modern politicians understand socialism; that is to say, not at all.
      Democracy refers to both the process of 'rule by the people', and counties that use it. Yes, the US is a republic, but a republic is a type of representative democracy, defined by its particular balance of power between the three branches of government: Judicial, Legislative, and Executive. A Representative Democracy is one where the people rule indirectly, by electing a representative, often based on a region, to the Legislative branch; in the USA, these are congress people and senators. An argument could be made that the US is not a good example of a representative democracy, with the gerrymandering and voter suppression, but that does not change what the US is.

    The most important concept left out of the discussion is that the Electoral College distribution is based on the census. As a Representative Republic, there needs to be a documentation of citizenship in its distribution of the population since it is the Electoral College that elects the President, not the popular vote. If there are 11,000,000 undocumented they affect the overall vote for the Presidency. This is not to say it should be used for deportation purposes, the immigration issue is a mess created by both parties.

    *_(_**_4:21_**_)_* *This is so dishonest.* Non-citizens would still fill-out the census regardless of how they answer the citizenship question. It would still encompass all inhabitants. I don’t understand why this has to be polarizing, only in America can the question “Are you a citizen?” on a survey be controversial.
    Whether you’re a conservative or liberal, or neither, it seems like a _very reasonable question_ to acquire statistical data for information on national demographics...

    I worked the census in 2009 and 2010.. A retired, former Philly Parole Officer, I worked where no one else would go: Darby, PA, Chester, PA, but where I had doors slammed in my face were mostly in suburban areas..PS: At the end, we returned money back to the government. As far as I knew, it was an honest job.

    As someone who worked on the most recent Canadian census a couple years ago, they stressed how absolutely illegal it was to ask about citizenship. Anyone who agreed to do the census could not be reported, detained or have the information they gave legally used against them. Not judge or police.
    This is a gross violation of rights to attach citizenship to the census. It should never be used to hunt down vulnerable people who are doing a civic duty

    • @artstsym
      @artstsym 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is mandatory, but the hassle of trying to get compliance means census workers are often put in the position of figuring out household data, especially with transient populations. The 2010 census was very simple (10 mandatory questions) but there were still numerous times where I simply had to make observation based submissions because enforcement would be extremely difficult if not impossible.

      Forever Lonely Potato Pretty much. You get a form in the mail every ten years, fill it out and send it back. You don't legally have to, but if you don't it distorts things like funding for schools. If the form isn't filled out properly, a seasonal census worker comes around to people's houses and knocks on the door to ask questions. You're again within your rights to tell him nothing.

      Takes place every 10 yrs. To justify any changes to properties, people, or populations within that last 10 yrs. Counts are done to determine public policy, redistricting on city/county/state maps, &to provide program funding to areas of a state.
      The info collected by any Census Bureau workers is strictly kept confidential for 72 years (other than info collected that is only used for statistical purposes). Any data leaks of PII that happens prior to that time, carries stiff penalties of Federal fines & up to 10 yrs prison time

    Paranoia is a huge reason why people don't fill out Census information now. What a lot of people don't understand is that you need to fill out the information to get proper funding. If you don't then the information of the entire country can be wrong, it's been like that for the past few Censuses.

    Why shouldn't the US government use census data for deportations ?

    • @alicjafilbier9942
      @alicjafilbier9942 6 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      Because thats not the point of the census. If the aim of the census is to have everyone counted to get some data then you have to make everyone wanting to be counted. If not, you have people who wont answer the census and you have incomplete data.

    • @sunnydaze80
      @sunnydaze80 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      there are other measures for determining if someone is a citizen or not. The census serves to count people in their communities to determine how they are funded, not to determine citizenship or legal status. Did you even watch the video?

    • @arothmanmusic
      @arothmanmusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Because an invalid census is more harmful to a healthy republic than illegal immigrants are.

    • @kpro8908
      @kpro8908 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Because it might make immigrants less willing to respond to the census, which jeopardizes its integrity and the effectiveness of subsequent remidial actions based upon its results. The purpose of the census is to count everyone living in the US, including citizens and non-citizens. If people actively ignore the census, or are too scared to respond, we may lose critical information that it’s specifically designed to collect. That information loss will make our policies less effective, and result in misappropriated federal funds. Point being, the census should only be used for impartial purposes, and be as accessible as possible to as many Americans as possible.

    • @codytappen
      @codytappen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Because then the census will be inaccurate. The point is to account for everyone living in America, regardless of lawfulness. People will not sell out themselves or their friends/family as illegal immigrants since they don't want to be deported, and therefore, asking about legality gets you neither the accurate account of people in the US, or who to deport

    Why is the cost of census increasing so much? If it is anything like health care or education than most of the cost increase is in administrative overhead. We need to get this cost back down to something reasonable.
