- Aqua Teen Hunger Force was one of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim’s strangest shows. It was chaos in animated form in all the best ways. The funniest Aqua Teen Hunger Force episodes were usually the weirdest and that’s what gave it its charm. While Adult Swim became something much bigger, it was this show that really captured the feeling of that block.

For me, Aqua Teen was one of those shows that I always knew existed but never got around to watching till just recently. I'm kicking myself for not having watched it sooner, because it's one of my favorite adult animated shows now. It's left behind a legacy that I know I and so many others can appreciate.

I started watching it on TV during the first season. I was curious because of the random name, and I fell in love. My mom even watched it with me and enjoyed it. I miss the good days of TV

This is a great retrospective! One thing I’d add is to pour one out for C. Martin Croker. Clay was an animator and voice actor for Cartoon Network for decades, going all the way back to animating original bumpers for their programming (his favorites were the Godzilla commercials) and worked extensively on Space Ghost C2C and Aqua Teen (he was the voice of Zorak and Moltar!). Clay unfortunately never asked for much money, a victim of the Imposter Syndrome that challenges many artists, and Adult Swim never paid him much either...never even giving him health insurance. Word has it that his poor health caught up with him, and unable to afford hospital visits, he died suddenly after eating out one night a few years ago.
Raise a toast to Clay, and to the unsung artists who should probably get paid more

This show was GOATED. Man when I was younger it used to scare me but now I think its one of the funniest shows on Adult Swim

When I think of adult swim, I think of aqua teen. Robot chicken lost quality and aqua teen kept me still coming back as a rebellious teenager
Aqua Teen Hunger Force is constantly funny throughout it’s 14 year run which all other cartoons with a long life span can’t not do.
Outside of the animation, there isnt much to robot chicken.

I get such good, warm feelings from the original opening segments with Dr. Weird when that music comes in. This and pretty much all of Adult Swim are my comfort shows, because they remind me of staying up late in high school, laying on the couch and laughing my ass off.
Dude staying up till midnight to watch ATHF was awesome.. get a little high just before it started watch 12 min show then pass out - wake up tired for school .. I still watch this and sealab 2021 to get some nostalgic warm fuzzies before bed… hahahah and MST3k/rifftrax - good times
Aqua Teen Hunger Force is a show that I was always aware of, seeing ads for it on Adult Swim while watching re-runs of Family Guy with my dad while I was way too young for it.The ones that stuck out the most were the season 11 ads. They were so..... absolute. I had never seen a channel make a big deal about a show ending, and it stuck with me. I was a month away from my 15th birthday then. Fast forward to the pandemic, where I was 19 and craving some weird content to binge through. I was a bit tired of constantly scrolling through TH-cam with nothing that looked interesting enough to watch... Until I found a Aqua Teen clip. I remembered the final season ads as I watched a clip.... and another clip.... and another, and another. I figured I might as well just watch the show itself, and at the time, Adult Swim had the show in it's entirety unlocked and available on their website. I spent the next couple weeks watching everything and I loved every 11 minute episode. I have yet to watch the movie, I'm saving it for a rainy day. Sadly, the show is not entirely available on Adult Swim's website anymore, if you want it in it's entirety, you'll need an HBO Max subscription. Even then, one of the best episodes, Shake Like Me was removed for being too insensitive. If you watched this video and for some stupid reason read my stupid essay comment, and haven't seen Aqua Teen for yourself, then stop reading this stupid comment and go watch the frickin show.

I remember how PIISSEDD everyone was when Aqua Team was cancelled. I was pissed as well. We will never get a show as great as Aqua Team ever again.

One of my most vivid memories of this show was being up way too late and being freaked out by an episode of this show where Carl bought a recorder that fed wires inti his body, forcing him to play the instrument for a group of furries and their deranged leader, Hoppy Bunny.
Well it doesn’t make him any less of a brain surgeon! He’s just getting his GROOVE on!

So I saw ATHF the first time it aired. I almost pissed myself. I went to work the next day and told my friends about it. I tried to explain it, I sounded like a raving lunatic. The guys thought I legit had an acid trip.
The funny part was one by one they all saw it and realized I wasn’t insane.
2 of the most important things about this show that are so important.
1. They never left the roots that made the show (which is brilliant)
2. They kept the animations and small quirky laughs that brought the show to fame in the beginning all the same.
They never truly changed their way and style of the show. That's what we loved.

I was a young stoner in high school when Aqua Teen first started airing, and used to get so hyped for Adult Swim on Sundays, sitting around and watching with my little group of stupid stoner friends, who probably should have been at their own homes getting ready for school the next day. Those original "All kids out of the pool" bumpers still hit me right in the nostalgies. I grew up devouring all things animated as a kid, especially things way above my age bracket like Liquid Television, and Oddities on MTV, and by the time Adult Swim came about it felt like finding the promised land. Aqua Teens, Harvey Birdman, and Home Movies were probably my favorites, but it's hard to choose. There was just so much gold to be found there.
"The unique quality of shows adult swim has had over the years" accurate af. There's some shows that's like yep ONLY adult swim would've aired that. And that's a good thing lol
The Mooninites were my favorites as a kid lmao. Like when they would patiently wait to flip the finger. MC Pee Pants had me dying, a rapper turned into a giant body-transfering vampire spider

My strongest memory of the show is being hospitalized and them not finding anything after days.
ATHF came on and the opening had a scene where Shake shoves his face in a platter of spaghetti. I remember bursting into tears because I wanted some so bad. My mom had my IV taken out and we went home.
TL;DR, Master Shake made me cry in the hospital once
Unfortunately, Adult Swim has taken down a lot of funny clips of the show from their TH-cam channel. And that really sucks because the clips kept the show relevant for a new generation to stumble across. Now the show is even closer to fading into obscurity

i convinced my dad to take me out of class early to see the ATHF movie. there was only like five other people there, and I was the only kid. I was in 8th grade lol
Favorite original show on Adult Swim way back when. It was time "for the kids to get out of the pool" when this came on (we didn't 😉).
The show had such cultural relevance, Carl was giving mutual shout-outs to SVP on SportsCenter, even giving NFL game locks of the decade of the week.
I'd like to see this series come back at some point.
It is the Broodwich, forged in darkness from wheat harvested in Hell's half-acre, baked by Beelzebub, slathered with mayonnaise beaten from the evil eggs of dark chicken forced into sauce by the hands of a one-eyed madman, cheese boiled from the rancid teat of a fanged cow, layered with six-hundred and sixty-six separate meats from an animal which has maggots for blood!
ATHF was the best!
_Aqua Teen_ has always been _huge_ to me. When I first moved out on my own all I had was a CRT TV, a PS2, and _Aqua Teen_ season 1 on DVD. They were still releasing them at the time, so I bought each one as they came out. They were the only thing on in my apartment, day and night, on loop for almost two years. To this day I remember every episode (to about season 6), and quote Carl or Meatwad at least once daily. Seeing the movie in theaters was a surreal experience as well. It's not for everyone, but you'll know if they're cool when you show it to people if they sing along to MC Pee Pants.
would love to see an _Xavier: Renegade Angel_ retrospective; there's definitely not enough video essays out there about that.

Corrections:
The Space Ghost back door pilot actually came after Aqua Teen Hunger Force had been running for a few seasons. Maiellaro and Willis pitched Baffler Meal as a Space Ghost episode when they wrote for that show, and it was rejected. They liked the idea of the characters anyway and developed the Aqua Teen pilot. After the show became successful, they were allowed to go back and make their original Space Ghost idea, I guess as a kind of fun "what if" exercise.
They didn't abandon the idea of the Aqua Teens being detectives to keep the show fresh, they had actually planned on abandoning that idea all along. Whoever was in charge of greenlighting shows was some old man who didn't understand that it's possible to write a sitcom with no central premise, so they lied and said it would be about the characters solving mysteries. They stopped solving mysteries after 3 episodes.
Spacecataz was a pilot for a spin-off show, which was rejected. They split it up and used clips as intros for season 3, but the full pilot was included as a DVD easter egg and is watchable on TH-cam.
Mike Lazzo _said_ he canceled the show because he felt it was time to move on, but that was a lie. He had a personal grudge against Maiellaro and Willis, and just wanted to hurt them.

I remember stumbling across this show in around 2005 when I was 13. I spent many late summer nights with Frylock, Master Shake and Meatwad!

15 years old with a job at Gamestop, me and my boss would watch this show and others late into the night until the alarm company would call to see why there were people still in the store.
I never understood aqua teen as a kid, coming back to it later in life I ended up loving it and it's just one of the shows I mindlessly throw on and happily rewatch now.
And here we are, HBO-MAX getting us the second Aqua Teen movie from Matt & Dave, in addition to Venture Bros and Metalocalypse films.
There's still good in the world.

Carl was of course probably the funniest part of the show.
I like trying to explain episodes to people who have never seen it. They always ask, "so what is the show about?" "It's about a milkshake, a box of french fries, and a meatball, they can all talk, and they all live in New Jersey next to a guy name Carl, who hates them. Keep up!"
Before I ever watched this show, my cousin tried to describe it to me. I thought he was just making shit up.

I’ min my mid 30s and this was a Top 5 as a teenager. Bought all the dvd sets and went to the teachers for the two movies. I didn’t hav3 many friends who watched it then - it’s cool to see how many people love it

I loved this show as a kid, and even now. Its one of my favorite as shows of all time! I love their weirdness, confusion, and their animation makes it more fun to watch cuz you have no idea what's going on, and we need more cartoons like this in the future...
For some reason I was allowed way too much access to adult swim as a young child . I barely remember it , but it makes me feel cozy to see the characters lol. Shake was always my favorite
To be fair on Adult Swims side, it might have been good to pull the show after 14years to keep it from turning into the Simpsons or just bating a dead horse. It would be nice to see it come back, so time will tell.
For anyone who doesn't know yet: adult swim announced they would be making three movies of of shows, these being Metalocalypse, Venture bros, and- you guessed it- Aqua teen hunger force
I remember my first time seeing aquateenz it was late on New Year's Eve and I was high as hell and I was about to call it a night and I was walking away for my TV and I heard...."has anyone seen an eight foot spider wearing a diaper and a showercap"!?. Muttered by igknigknot on that episode where every villainous character from previous adventures assembled on the moon to plot on the aqua teens demise i had to finish watching it after such a surreal quote and I was hooked i was an instant convert to the church of adult swim and still worship to this day this video was dope I liked and subbed thnx 4 the content
Me and my wife were broke, living in bumfuck Egypt with no cable and we only watched our ATHF dvds religiously. The crew were like our friends and I will forever be grateful this masterpiece was ever created.

I had no idea how many episodes I had unintentionally seen over the years until one night there was a marathon and I was familiar with the side characters.
This show had one of the funniest and best writings ive ever seen
Aqua Teen is literally one of my favorite shows ever, and it sounds like it may be coming back. It's just so freaking random and hilarious. I realized I hadn't seen a lot of seasons since like 2007, so I've been binging it on HBO Max. I did start watching when I was like 11 or 12. My dad and I would watch it sometimes. He said he thought it was so stupid it was funny.

I accidentally saw the show when I was younger, and was terrified by the animation . . . specifically Meatwad terrified me. Now, I’m binging the show, and I love it immensely.

For me, that late night childhood moment lead me to seeing MTV's "The Head" and "The Maxx" when I was around 6 or 7

I remember watching The Maxx as a kid and being pretty blown away.
Athf was the TV equivalent of what ended up becoming internet flash animation. For me, it's nostalgic because it reminds me of that time when the internet had no barrier to entry.
I use to watch this growing up and it was freaking hilarious then! I didn't know nearly half of the history behind the show. Thanks again Jordan for an awesome video!

Remember when they played the whole movie on adult swim before it released in theaters. But it was muted and shrunk down into the corner of the screen.

the Aqua Teen x Space ghost episode actually came out after Aqua Teen was already out for a year. they just did it like that as a joke.
Once I turned on Adult Swim at 4am and there was a show on called "Unedited Footage of a Bear." And that's what it was. God I love Adult Swim.
The first 3-4 seasons were some of the best written pieces of comedy on any T.V show ever made. It's clear in the later seasons the creators wanted to move onto other projects but AS wanted more and more of that ATHF cash flow. That's why so many people find the earlier seasons so funny and re-watchable.
As far as I am aware (and I am guessing at what you meant by the creators wanted to move onto other things, which afaik wasn't the case) that was all to do with the syndication of the show not happening for various reasons.
My dad showed me this show in 2003 i was 5 and when it ended in 2015 i deadass cried watching the finale with my dad

I watched a lot of Adult Swim as a kid because I had and still have really bad insomnia, I would stay up until 4 in the morning waiting for Inuyasha or The Mighty Boosh. In doing that I saw many other AS shows that I should not have been watching at that age, whether it be The Drinky Crow Show, Metalocalypse, Robot Chicken, The Boondocks, The Oblongs, Superjail, Moral Orel, Venture Bros, Home Movies, TEASGJ, Space Ghost, Harvey Birdman, Sealab 2021, Assy Mcgee, 12 oz. Mouse, The Brak Show, Check It Out with Dr. Steve Brule, Frisky Dingo, Squidbillies, Delocated, Lucy The Daughter of the Devil, Mary Shelley's Frankenhole, Loiter Squad, Saul of the Mole Men, Mr. Pickles. Basically I've seen almost every show they had on between 2008 - 2017 but the recent stuff they have on now couldn't tell you a thing about. Sorry this is such a long comment

I hated this show when I first watched it. Then hanging out at a friends house and getting wildly drunk changed my perspective on it. I didn’t really get into this show until around 23 or so. I also lost interest as it progressed the first 7 dvd volumes are superb and the movie is a masterpiece though.
Great news, there will a movie for not only ATHF, but also the venture bros and Metalocalypse
