Surreal humor can, surprisingly, be quite difficult to do properly. There's a very fine line between bizarre and nonsensical situations being funny and entertaining, and it feeling like the creator is trying too hard to be "totally random." Aqua Teen Hunger Force managed to go right to the edge of that line without really ever crossing it. It was pure unadulterated insanity that made zero sense and was completely ridiculous from front to back, but it always felt organic. It never had that cringe sensation of "lol look at this, it's so random and out of nowhere uhuhuhuhuhuh."
i discovered this show when i was in high school, and i had watched it all the way through so many times that by the end of my senior year i could recall entire episodes while bored in class lol
My absolute favorite ever-running gag of ATHF is the intro and most external material presenting the team doing epic stuff yet in-show they never do any of that stuff in the absolute, I love the idea of that
I miss when the pop-up website was an actual domain you could visit. Enter the domain name as spelled out in the episode (which the algorithm _won't_ let me do even without punctuation for God knows why), you'd be greeted by sound clips of Master Shake, a repeating buffering animation, and catch occasional glimpses of the Wwwyzzerddd as he flooded your browser with fake pop-up ads until your browser crashed. Unfortunately, ad-blockers came out a couple years later, and the charm fell off a cliff. Still, the site remained up for many years after the episode aired. They put actual effort into that website. You don't see that kind of fake tie-in site/elaborate shitpost anymore in mainstream media... *_"ENTER THE INTERNET..."_*
Gonna be honest, whenever I watch videos discussing Aqua Teen Hunger Force, a point I tend to disagree with is the idea that it's just pure nonsense with no rhyme or reason with writing that feels like it's just pure stream of consciousness. I'm not saying it's straight genius or that the show isn't weird, but it's like when I watch the show I get the strong impression that the writers just straight know what they're doing. Characters have strong personalities and chemistry with one another, gag one offs and reocurring characters have some clear intentions behind how they can bounce off the main cast. Like the bible fruit present a fun idea of what if The Aqua Teens met characters more maladjusted than them and suddenly they look like the normal ones in comparison. Alot of Carl's characterization does so much to make him more interesting than just a straightman to the Aqua Teens and show how he's a pretty far gone bad person with self-destructive habits. Like so many episodes indicate clear as day that the show's not pure randomness and that the writers have very clear ideas of what they want to do with the characters and episode plots.
I will never understand how someone sees a neon pixel art sign in highly visible areas could ever be confused as a bomb- i think thats just human stupidity being literally lower than the show itself ever gets.,
When i was a kid, I thought episodes legitimately had continuity because they'll act like we *should* know certain things only for them to completely ignore it the next episode
One of the pop-ups in the episode shows a girl sitting on the street corner with the text "ready for aome desperate homeless teen action?! LET'S GET IT ON!"
For me, the funniest part of the episodes is that it just ends, abruptly. Usually right as Carl is getting the brunt of whatever the group was cooking up.
I’ve been waiting for this retrospective for years! This show is banished to the darkest corners of my mind, childhood memories peaking through soggy, crusty eyes just to see the most absurd and, a lot of the time, gory bits to ever grace the airwaves.
Now that ive finished the video it feels like you dont understand the shaggy dog story style of humor at all. The whole point of the show is that every episode is a shaggy dog story, its the focus of the shows comedy. Makes me curious on how you feel about norm MacDonald's humor.
Its always so funny to hear the younger generations take on these. Continuity between TV shows is a new thing. We didn't have many growing up and we never expected it until it became a cultural thing to make your TV shows a running story.
I was a college kid when ATHF started, everyone had their own version of the same story: "we were sitting around blazing, watching the show, then someone said Carl was new jersey Homer Simpson and blew all our minds"
the lyrics of this shows theme song is probably the only weird;y comforting thing that will always make me feel somewhat better about the aspect of morality being limited and unpredictable. i really enjoy how comforting this silly show is. we are the aqua team hunger force

i discovered this show when i was in high school, and i had watched it all the way through so many times that by the end of my senior year i could recall entire episodes while bored in class lol
"I get it, it ain't making me laugh but..I get it."
Infinitely quotable. My friends and I practically speak in spongebob and aquateen quotes
They definitely didnt know whay they were doing at the start. The show even acknowledges it with the jokes about how they were detectives for a bit.
I remember staying up late to watch adult swim and I'm pretty sure that's what shaped me into who I am today.
Its about living in new jersey with roommates
28:51 it takes two seconds to google that the voice of Shake is Dana Snyder.
Thank you. That upset me as well. He’s such an iconic voice.
I just started watching athf last month but I would honestly agree that it’s one of the greatest shows ever made in adult swim
As a kid I never understood this show, as an adult it's some of the funniest god-damned shit ive ever seen.
Glad someone finally acknowledges Frylock's status as Cartoon Network's first openly trans character
The mooninites are the best things in any cartoon show lol
Now do xavier renegade angel.
“That’s the spice!”
That show was so god damned weird. I loved it.
I see your ATHF, and I raise you Squidbillies.
And I reraise with Superjail!.
The Mooninites are based off of Space Invaders. Not the E.T. Atari game, little one.
"Do they have lil turkey muffins?"
I love this show sooo much I learned how to speak exactly like Meatwad and still can 😹 lmao
Oh hello Carl, I see you are admiring my braids…
I will never understand how someone sees a neon pixel art sign in highly visible areas could ever be confused as a bomb- i think thats just human stupidity being literally lower than the show itself ever gets.,
MY NAME IS SHAKE ZULA THE MIC RULA THE OLD SCHOOLA
I love that the Space Ghost version of Master Shake sounds just like the Alien guys from ATHF.
When i was a kid, I thought episodes legitimately had continuity because they'll act like we *should* know certain things only for them to completely ignore it the next episode
That knock knock joke gets me still to this day
There are absolutely no inaccuracies in this video, whatsoever. It’s really good, and the guy is really good in it.
One of the pop-ups in the episode shows a girl sitting on the street corner with the text "ready for aome desperate homeless teen action?! LET'S GET IT ON!"
Really enjoyable video, man. Hope this blows up.
“They really wanted to make this cheep!” -cuts back to a png of your avatar-
athf is responsible for at least 1 of everyone's vocal stims and i think thats magical
I feel like the writers just wrote plot points then the actors just ad lib it all then they animate around that
Now that ive finished the video it feels like you dont understand the shaggy dog story style of humor at all.
The "Hand Banana" episode is cursed and aged horribly but I still love ATHF. It's the greatest show ever created by Mooninites.
13:18 All the hours ive sunk in GTAV and i never listened to this channel long enough to catch this. BRAVO!
0:44 the emplemon music
bruh
You missed Carls cameo appearances in the single tracks by the acclaimed Moxy Foxy where he ponders queries of the mind and body.
SO glad athf is being recognized lately!!
How many fans still say something from this show at least daily? I still do Meatwad's "Do what now?"
That weren’t no grandma boy, that was a groceryyy baaaaggg.
