Given me a lot of insight as I modify an Oklahoma Joe to build a bigger firebox and larger outlet stack with collector.

Nice build! Given the gauge of metal, you may not run into this issue or have near the fluctuations, but one tip I've found for winter smoking is to drape a welding blanket over the cook chamber and it really helps to maintain cooking temps without stressing the burn box nearly as much.
@@FabbinAdventures that's not bad only 24 hours to build that. It's nice to be able to build your own stuff. You take more pride in it then buying everything.
Definitely weld a counterweight to the door it will open with 1 hand... I put one on my custom reverse built smoker, cook chamber is 36"x60" with a 60"x 10 " stainless steel shelf on the front, fire box is 36" x24"x24" also made a wood basket for fire box, has a 6" diameter x 60" stack on top of draft plate has a 1/4 " thick diamond plate hog I cut out and welded, smoker is 8' foot long welded on to 5'x12' dual axle trailer. Will add a 36"x24" charcoal grill made out of a job site tool box with top door this way I could close it up, 16"x16" propane burner with stainless steel prep table. It is the complete package. You might try building a reverse flow smoker. I did that with my offset stick burner and it made it MUCH better. Basically you need a plate in the bottom of the cook chamber that forces all of the smoke from the firebox to the opposite end of the smoker to even out the temp, then it flows up into the cooking chamber then back across. the flue is then on the firebox side of the smoker and the heat makes two full passes across the whole smoker. The only drawback is that its a pain to get the draft started.
Yeah, i will build more and try a reverse flow then. Im actually building a couple more smokers for some other guys right now, so maybe someone will ask me to build a reverse flow. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@FabbinAdventures Great video! I wished I lived near you so I could ask you to build one for me! This is a wish for me ti build, but I doubt if I am that handy. Materials would also be a challenge. Keep up the good work!
Awesome looking smoker. I’m curious to know how you finished it? How did you deal with the rust and whatnot once all the fabrication was done? Is that something you can just wire wheel off or is there another process to it?
Very nice build….. have you had any problems with grease fires? I’ve been building these cookers for about 30 years and one of the things that I’ve learned is to add a piece of metal/baffle in the bottom of the cooking chamber about 2” from the fire box to keep the grease from falling back in to the fire book. I’m not being critical of your work because to be honest it’s freaking awesome.
I have not had any flare ups yet, but that is a valid point, i could see how that could happen for sure. I just leave my drain valve open while smoking.
No baffle inside, sofar i have not had a problem, maybe if i loaded it up more id need a baffle, but sofar so good! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Awesome build!!! Im preparing to make a smoker for myself too. I have 3 questions 1) How did you determine what size of hole you needed to make going from the fire box to the cook chamber? 2) How did you know what size of hole you needed to make going from the cook chamber to the smoke stack???? 3) How did you know what diameter to make the smoke stack????
Thanks man! Well it kinda had to do with what i had on hand. I had that 4 1/2" pipe for the stack so i made the opening between the fire box and smoke chamber about a similar size although oval. The smoker has no problem runnin 175 to 400 degrees depending how much you feed the fire. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Awesome job! Gonna pick up some pipeline pipe soon to build one myself. Basically gonna copy you haha. How's that smoker holding up after all this time? You liking the size of everything?
Yeah it works great, about the only thing i would add or mod would be to make the door side of the fire box open completely for easier ash removal, other than that its about perfect for what we need! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@FabbinAdventures yeah I can see that! Did I miss the ribs?! Lol. I’ve slapped together a couple rudimentary “smokers” just to get some smoke flavor on some salmon a time or two, but that thing you made is legit!👍.
Thanks man, always wanted an offset stick burner. Looked into buying one, but man are they expensive. Figured i can build one, i see why they are so expensive now!
Love the build man, I have an opportunity to pick up a 24" diameter pipe, wall thickness is somewhere between 3/8-1/2(his words not mine lol) and the kicker is it's chromoly steel, any downsides to building with chromoly? What's your thoughts?
Dude, you got skills. What did you use to get all that rust off and prep the steel for your clear coat? Do you have any vids on how you prepped / cleaned the steel prior to coating or painting it. I tried a wire brush on some rust, got some off but I can still see rust and it’s not real shiny bare. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Lol, its true though, wow 24" would be a huge smoker, i made another one since the video for a guy outta 20" and thats even quite a bit bigger!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Very nice!!!
Thank you, it wotks very well!
Excellent video! Thanks for sharing
Thank you sir, and thanks for watching and commenting!
makes me want to change the one I built 5 years ago
It works very well!
How you cleanout the firebox with that door up so high? good build i would off just gotten all half door cut for full access. and a slight angle barrier inside the cooking chamber from the fire to keep that high flame from waving in and burn.
I just use a dust pan, and shovel it in, cleans up easy. I did think of making a clean out, but didnt want to intoduce any more "drafts"
I have also thought about making a shield like you say, but havent seen the need for it yet. If i need one, ill build one.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Looks awesome. Wouldn’t hurt to put in some kind of baffle in the smoke chamber so you don’t have straight fire going into it.
Yes i thought of that, but sofar i havent seen a need for it.
Thanks for watching!
Nice build! I'm just barely learning how to fabricate and I may want to add some things onto my smoker. What was that song from around 6:35 to 9:10?
Thanks, glad you like the build.
Fabrication just takes time and imagination and a variety of skill sets. Its great to be able to make just about anything you can dream up..lol
I dont remember the name of the song, id have to go look it up again.

great job .fire box might be a bit small
Fire box is fine, smoker has no probs hitting 350. It works awesome!
Great work
Thanks for watching!
well well done
Thanks, it works well!
Great job buddy... Looks really neat...😉👍
It works great! Got a chicken in there right now in fact!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Get er done looks great nice work
Thanks, that smoker works awesome! Ill be doin a brisket and probably a chicken and maybe some ribs on it this coming weekend!
Thanks for watching and your comment!
NOW....I’m HUNGRY! !! That must be a brute to move around on gravel....but with such heavy metal it will be a tremendous smoker....can’t wait to get out there and test drive it with some ribs....or maybe steak....YUM! Very interesting and informative video....great while waiting for parts
Oh man it works awesome! Now though you can actually over smoke ribs, the last batch was on the verge, less smoke next time!
Real nice Job ,,,,,,,,Thank You Sir !
Glad you like the video.

@@FabbinAdventures Great video! I wished I lived near you so I could ask you to build one for me! This is a wish for me ti build, but I doubt if I am that handy. Materials would also be a challenge. Keep up the good work!
Brilliant!
Thank you!
Exactly how we build ours, great job👌🏼
She works great, thanks for watching and commenting!
Great grill!
It does work pretty good!
Looks fantastic
Works fantastic also..lol

Awesome looking smoker. I’m curious to know how you finished it? How did you deal with the rust and whatnot once all the fabrication was done? Is that something you can just wire wheel off or is there another process to it?
It was wire wheeled after i finished it then high temp clear coated it.
Great build. Curious if you added a baffle plate in the bottom to even your hat out more?
No baffle inside, sofar i have not had a problem, maybe if i loaded it up more id need a baffle, but sofar so good!

That’s some very nice work! Love the video
Thanks, it works awesome too!
Killer smoker and everything is recycled. Good job
Thank you sir, the unit works awesome!

Good work

Man Id love to have one!!! Only 20 inch wide 48 long cooking chamber!
I happen to have some 20" pipe here, where are you from?
They do work pretty awesome!
Im in central New York. Im sure shipping would be massive!
Oh yeah, no doubt it would be!
Amazing build dude!! In my eyes best Ive seen yet.
Awesome, thanks! It works very well!
This is a real smoker
Yes it is!

He called his neighbor !
Go to feldon smoker calculator it gives all you need to build a smoker tank, firebox, stack size, inlet drafts it's fantastic.....
@@larmil3347 firebox will be under sized by feldens calculator
Well it seems to work fine for what i use it for.
Nothing like using good thick steel to last a lifetime.
Should last generations! Lol
Beautiful job!
Thank you, it works awesome!
@@FabbinAdventures ha ha! I know right?! I don’t think anyone could afford to buy that one off of you, and I’m sure you’re not selling!👍
I have actually made and sold a few to some local guys.
This was awesome, what did you do to get that pretty dark color on it in the end?
High temp clear coat if your talking about the outside finish.
Looking good 👍

Great build! What size welder did you use?
Thanks, 200 amp mig, pretty much maxed
Very nice work! I love it! How many hours of work do you need to made it? Thanks.
Thanks! It takes anywhere between 20 and 24 hours depending on options.
Looks great, MIG welder?
Thanks, yes mig welder, .035 wire.
Love the build man, I have an opportunity to pick up a 24" diameter pipe, wall thickness is somewhere between 3/8-1/2(his words not mine lol) and the kicker is it's chromoly steel, any downsides to building with chromoly? What's your thoughts?
That would be sweet especially if its free, dont know of any reason why not to use chromoly.
Thanks for watching and happy building!
Reject door counter weights, embrace masculinity.💪👍
Lol, something like that.

Hmm you like bbqs
Sure do.
That came out really nice. How well is that clear coat holding up?
Thanks, the clear coat is coming off the burn chamber but still good on the cook chamber!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I just used a wire wheel cup on a side grinder
Thank you Kindly!
Man thats awesome
Glad you liked it, pretty simple build!
Love it !!! Great job 👍🍺
Thanks man, it works great!
