Easy Mini Phalaenopsis Orchid Care | Troubleshooting Common Issues & Getting Blooms!

  • Let’s talk all about easy mini phal care! There are 4 things that you should look out for when growing mini pals:
    1. Is my mini phal getting adequate moisture? If you water on a schedule with your other orchids, be mindful that this orchid will dry much faster than the others because it’s in a much smaller pot that will retain less moisture
    2. Is it being fed properly? Are you fertilizing regularly? To go one step further, is it getting calcium and magnesium?
    3. Is my mini phal getting enough light? Light is very important. Indirect bright light basically means filtered bright light. Phals can typically handle an eastern exposure and should be behind a sheer curtain with Southern and Western Exposures
    4. Is my mini phal getting a slight temperature drop at night? This helps trigger blooming, but I find it’s less important than the 3 points above

    Growing Conditions & Climate:
    Almost all orchids grown indoors
    Eastern Exposures (4-5 hours direct early morning sun) & LED Grow Lights
    - Most orchids grow under the lights
    - Only cool growers & orchids in bloom grow under my Eastern facing windows
    - Grow space doesn’t get any additional sunlight other than the LED’s
    Zone 7a - Humid Subtropical

    When I get an orchid in bloom that is tightly jammed into a tiny pot of compacted sphagnum moss, I immediately remove them from that pot and put them in the appropriate size pot surrounded with loose and airy sphagnum. That seems to give the roots room to breathe without disturbing the root ball. Once blooming is over I can tackle that compacted medium, remove the dead roots, and complete the repot.

    I have been using the MSU fertilizer on my orchids. They seem to thrive on it. I water with that fertilizer three times in a row and on the fourth watering I use clear water to flush the medium with.

    Just saw video and read comments. I'm seeing white residue on my bark and think it's the cal/mag. Questions, You say you add a little bit af cal/mag, how much is a little bit? Made to instructions both fertilizer ans cal/mag, what approximate ratio do you use of cal /mag to fertilizer? And super thrive? Thank you.

      Is there a difference in fertilizer strength for mini orchids if their on a different watering sechulde then the big phal's

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kathleenross7412 I would hold back the fertilizer on the additional waterings, and fertilize and flush on the same schedule as the rest of my orchids with the same strength. This keeps things simple. If I find that there's salt deposits forming on the minis (a sign that it's getting more nutrients than it's taking in) I pull back on the fertilizer frequency. I also don't fertilize when they are in bloom, because they aren't in active growth at this point. Hope this helps

    Hi Nicole
    I have just recently started watching your videos and am really enjoying them. I was wondering what strength of fertilisers do you use in your semi hydrophobic set up? I have had some Phalaenopsis orchids for 3 to 4 years and they have never bloomed for me.
    Cheers fro Australia Ingrid

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apologies for missing this comment! Thank you for watching my videos, I'm so glad you like them! For Semi Hydro, I aim for 150 PPM in the winter, and around 300 PPM in the summer. I have a TDS meter where I can check it out. I also include kelp and a tiny bit of Cal-Mag in the mix sometimes. For phals that don't bloom, I'd say the biggest issue for them is light. They are low light, but should still get more than you think. Never direct sun, but bright filtered light (say through a sheer curtain) will do wonders. Another factor is a day / night temp drop in the fall - this triggers the spikes. This can be accomplished in the fall (depending on where you live in AU) by keeping them near a cooler window. I hope this helps ,and I hope you'er staying healthy! :)

    hi thank u for this video it was very helpful!! i was wondering how often can u keep mixed fertilizer stored for? i know ur supposed to mix fresh nutrients when u feed but if ur watering schedule is a few days apart for a few orchids can you keep the mixed fertilizer for a few days?

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have watered my orchids with water that I mixed a few days prior but to be honest, I'm not sure what the optimal storage time is. It's probably best to mix the same day of.

    Funny thing about quite a lot of "mini" Phalaenopsis you find in box stores and grocery stores is they aren't actually mini, they are given growth inhibitors to keep them small. And this, I think, is where a lot of people run into trouble because it does weaken the plants. And if you are successful with them, then they grow out and you have this big old plant with the smaller blooms of a mini. (your variegated one will probably be a medium to full size plant)

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't know that, very unfortunate to have a big plant with tiny blooms lol. Long term curious to see how they do. I've killed so many in the beginning, the larger phals can live through so much neglect, the little ones wither away so fast, didn't realize growth inhibitors were a factor. Thanks for sharing that!

    • @ellietobe
      @ellietobe 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have read that they are real. They grow in the upper levels of the trees where wild orchids grow. The mini orchid also is accustomed to getting more water since they do grow at a higher level of the tree. Of course the Phalaenopsis is a hybrid but there are several different types of mini orchid as well.
      It could be that some growers are selling people fake mini orchids but many are selling the real thing.

    • @michaelmccarthy4077
      @michaelmccarthy4077 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ellietobe sigh. Phalaenopsis is a genus, it could be a species or a hybrid. There are minis, medium and standard in both species and hybrids. Two years ago a large number of the minis being sold were not actually mini, but larger sized hybrids given growth inhibitors. Since then, a large number of actual mini hybrids have come to market and fewer of the fake ones are being seen.
      There are literally thousands of mini orchids, there are only a handful of Phalaenopsis species that are mini.
      Growing in the higher level of a tree really doesn't make a lot of difference in the amount of water it receives, just the amount of light. Elevation can make a huge difference in the amount of water it receives but that has nothing to do with tree position.

    I killed a mini and was so upset but I found three new ones! They have lost their flowers and saw someone who took the stem and started another one from there. What do you think? Where did you purchase your semi-hydroponic pots? When you water your mini's do you soak them for 10 min. or just let the water run through? Some people put an ice cube on them. I guess I have watched to many videos on how to do. Please let me know! Thank you!

    I can understand your reluctance to repot a mini until you blooms fade, but that can be as much as 3 or 4 months.
    Next time you get a Mimi, consider repotting right away. The orchid is already in stress mode from being shipped and it's long journey to your home. I haven't had any problem with bud blast and I "repot" to water culture, which is the most stressful. 💖🌞🌵😷
