    Plant tissue culture scientist here... If nobody else in the comments mentioned it, the medium that orchid was in is a polymerized plug. They're usually made with a mix of coir and peat moss which is finely shredded, mixed with a foaming agent, polymer, nutrients, and fungicide, heated to about 100F, and injected into a mold. The foaming agent provides the spongy feeling and air pockets while the polymer holds the plug together. I've used these many times when outplanting tissue culture plants with delicate root systems and have seen plugs marketed specifically for orchids with a distinctive "C" shape which allows the plug to be easily placed around the typically large diameter orchid roots. Hope that clears up what that medium is for people.

    I am so grateful to have found this video. I got my Younghome Sunkist 2 months ago and the flower spikes died off recently. After seeing this I realized it was a good time to repot and I was shocked to find that what I thought was a perfectly healthy root was only healthy at the tip and had rotted all the way back to the plant. The orchid came packed in only sphagnum moss so I assume it was holding on to water for too long.

    I’ve learned so much from you,thank you!! I also have mini Phal. I love her. She was a rescue from Home Depot. She still has a few flowers and is giving another flower spike. I repotted her yesterday. She only has 2 leaves left but they seem healthy enough. I was thinking of cutting the flower spikes to give the roots which were very small but healthy and leaves a chance to grow. What do you think I should do? She was potted in moss so when I repotted I used 1/2 and 1/2 moss and bark.

On those stocks I have just noticed new leaves growing at the top of the spike not sure if I should let it continue or disregard them

    Glad you did a video with that compact seedling soil that I discovered & mentioned in one of your posts. It's the biggest reason I discovered as to why my orchids kept dying. It kept them wet, even though I thought they were dry & caused them to rot & die😔.
    Your videos have been a big help for me.

    Hi Dani! Why don't you soak the orchid prior to removing the old bark or medium? It seems easier to remove medium after the roots are soaked in water. And it prepares it to be re-potted. Please share your thoughts.

    The ones my local grocery store get in are grown in these terrible shrink wrap "pots" with no ventilation, packed to the teeth with moss, and sopping wet 😩 I almost always repot as soon as I get home, otherwise all the roots would rot off. The last one I found was actually not as badly potted, but the poor thing was strangling itself with insanely long roots which was choking it and limiting airflow. It's crazy the terrible conditions some of them are kept

    No matter how many videos I watch, I seem to totally destroy my orchids. Then... I paid close attention to the repotting of these mini phalaenopsis. She is putting the bottom of the stem above the media, with some of the roots showing. I have been repotting with the roots completely buried. On three of them the roots completely disintegrated, and I only noticed when the leaves turned yellow. They are in ICU now. Pray they survive. I am giving myself six orchids to live through the winter before I purchase more.

    Hi Dani I have watched a bunch of your video's and I really find them interesting. I have a Phalaenopsis orchid, with leaves that are dull and leathery and have rib lines. I learned from one of your previous videos that this is a condition know as dehydration of the leaves. My question is how do you actually rehydrate the leaves? I have re-potted the orchid in sphagnum moss following your advice on repotting and watered with crystalized fertilizer as recommended. A new flower spike has begun to emerge but I'd really like to see the leaves recover. What else can I do besides being patient? Thanks in advance

    Very good tutorial. Awesome channel. How far do you put the medium up to the base of the orchid? Like should it be above the 1st leaf or below. Should you be able to see the roots coming out of the base? I don't think you mentioned that. Maybe cuz its not important? Anyway love your videos

    thank you for posting these videos in a "species orientated" grouping! I will be watchin from front to back. I have seen many videos online regarding the promotion of Keikis, without the use of paste (which appears to be unavailable in this area), using home made methods. Two I found interesting were : aloe, and the gel for a tomatoe combined with the juice of a potatoe. The claim is that these items contain the hormone necessary to promote offspring, as opposed to the hormone needed for flowers.
    I trust your judgement, and would appreciate your insight if possible please.

      @MissOrchidGirl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I'm personally not a promoter, or believer in such 'hacks', but for the fun of it you can experiment. I would not raise my hopes though. Keikis can also appear naturally, you may get one just by treating your orchid right! Good luck! ☺️

    Hello Danny. I live in Florida on the west coast. Some people claim to leave their orchids outside and repot them in clay pots. I have all of mine in my house in A/C and I wonder if they would be happier outside in limited sun. Are Florida’s temperatures good for orchids? Also I see some orchids in open air containers like wooden boxes hanging outside with no potting mix. What are your thoughts for this climate ?

    Dani, thank you for the video. Coincidentally, I am considering repotting some of my phals in the next larger pot. I've decided to use rePotme medium because I'm dissatisfied with the garden center orchid medium. My pots are medium only, no moss. My watering method is a 20 minute weekly soak. I have had great success with this. My question is fertilizer. Currently I use a liquid sprayed on the leaves. I'm curious about the rePotme slow relaese fertilizer but concerned that the weekly soakings will quickly deplete it. Thanks in advance for a response; do you have an opinion?

    • @marlettaengland1513

      I’ve used repot me fertilizer for a couple of years. I also do a soaking like you do. I fertilize weekly for three weeks then take one week off from fertilizer to flush everything out with a regular watering. My orchids have done well with this method. I highly recommend repot me products. Hope that is helpful.

    I have been very patient with my orchids. I've had them for 3+ years, they've only bloomed the flower that I brought them home with. They've been growing new leaves and the older ones are growing BIGGER. They have airiel roots and are healthy, I give them peroxide or black tea periodically. I've just recently transplanted them, and HOLY CRAP the plant part took off growing so fast on all of them itade me laugh! Like I could sit and watch them!!🤣♥️Why won't they bloom? How much longer do I need to wait, or yet how much longer do you think it will be? I'll wait forever😎😎🤞 because the leaves themselves are beautiful.

    Do you still have an email I could send you a picture of my mini orchid? I have some concerns. So i got the dual core pots from repotme since I live in Minnesota and it gets dry in winters. They say once it goes through to put it in the outer shell. I want to just repot it into the next size up (5.5Inch) container;however, I noticed today there is a root poking through the bottom of a slot in the pot. This is great, it's growing new roots and a new leaf and I also noticed a flower spike starting to form which is where I have a concern. Should I repot it because the root is going through the bottom of the inner pot? (There is some space between the inner and bottom) Or should I wait because there is a flower spike starting to form? It's also sort of growing at an angle instead of straight up and down. So when i repot it should i keep it the same way it's growing? Or try to make it more verticle? It has air roots so im not sure if that would work. I just have so many questions I apologize if this is too much I just want to do right by my orchid.

    I repotted my phalaenopsis orchid that was in great health, tons of new growth tips on bottom roots, several new roots growing, and blooms had just dropped after a little over four months of being in bloom. I felt it needed repotted because it had been over two years in the same media. And it was getting very tight in the pot for roots. It was time for a new pot, and fresh media. Well, I ended up finding two roots that needed to be cut. So, I ended up spraying roots with hydrogen peroxide. I feel like I made a huge mistake. My roots have all dried out very badly. New growth tips are now gone. And once the roots dry out, they look very brown. And several roots have died now. What should I do? I feel like the peroxide has ruined my orchid.....☹️. Please help.....

    • @rakshith.s.aradhya
      @rakshith.s.aradhya 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure that you dilute the hydrogen peroxide to 2% or less ...concentrated solution will damage the roots.
      If you do not want to risk using hydrogen peroxide, then stick to the mild fungicide suitable for orchids. Hope this answers your problem ✌🏻

    What I’ve learned that because most nurseries don’t use orchid pots I remove the orchid from the nursery pot and place it in an a pot with slits or holes so it receives air circulation. Once the blooms fade I remove the old medium and repot. This way the orchid can acclimate to it’s new surroundings and I get to enjoy the blooms. Win-Win!!! 👍🏼

      Thanks for the Q&A today Dani, this is a great video! Yesterday I repotted my first cattleya orchid, I got her from an orchid nursery. She had a lot of root damage that resembled snail damage and also a live millipede, I didn't find any snails or slugs on her though. I treated her with hydrogen peroxide and repotted her in fresh media. My question is, when you have struggled in the past with snails yourself do you follow-up with a second repot after a month to check the roots again or do you just visually monitor the parts of the plant that you can see? I watched all of your videos on snails that I could find already and scoured the internet as well haha; I just haven't really found anything about follow-up care anywhere. Thanks so much for this channel, it's a real orchid saver!
