  • Lesson on Methionine Metabolism and the Activated Methyl Cycle. Methionine is a sulfur-containing essential amino acid, which can be processed within the activated methyl cycle to produce s-adenosyl methionine (SAM) and tetrahydrofolate (THF). Methionine can also be metabolized to succinyl-CoA, which can then be utilized in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle to generate ATP. Two enzymes in these pathways, one in the activated methyl cycle and the other needed to produce succinyl-CoA, require vitamin B12 for there utilization.
Hey everyone. In this lesson you will be introduced to Methionine Metabolism and the related Activated Methyl Cycle. We will also discuss the purpose of the activated methyl cycle, the enzymes involved in each pathway, which vitamins are required for enzyme activity, and how methionine is converted into succinyl CoA for energy production.

I'm a med student writing a paper that involves the homocysteine pathways and whatnot. Your videos are the only videos that show the whole picture. In First Aid and most places they only show homocysteine being converted into cysteine and don't show it's eventual conversion to MMA. I don't think I can cite your video in the paper unfortunately. I was wondering if you had a source that showed this entire pathway? I can find sources for bits and pieces but not the whole thing for some reason?!?!? Your videos have been super helpful for me!!! thanks for making them!

Can I say the methionine cycle is ATP consuming?or the adenosine regenerated can compensate the 1ATP used?

Question..... can anyone explain or give clarity on the following ... does any change to typical Purine & Pyrimidine, folate, B6 or B12 pathways during pre or early post natal periods result in heritable genetics that could be passed from that baby should they procreate in later life?

Not sure how to get a hold of you but can you do a methylation cycle video and how broken methylation can contribute to disorders such autism and where gene mutations in the cycle can cause these issues. not sure if you can point out where supplements like SAMe can be used to help fix the methionine cycle etc? please. and thank you

Is it possible for a person to be deficient of methionine? If yes, what is the reason for such deficiency?

    • @dana102083

Yes dr masterjohn has a website link for methionine and glycine balance. The more protein you eat the more glycine you need. Eating skin on bone in helps. Adding extra collagen powder, glycine powder.. Can help. He lays it out well so i hope you cqn find it. Armstrong sisters also have good info on this.
