Niles had already shown an interstellar in getting in my canoe. Unfortunately, it's a bit too small for his long legs. He's also a very confident dog and used to going places with me. Marty, the black dog, may do well on a SUP in our creek eventually. But I feel he might he overwhelmed if we try anywhere out in public. His anxiety gets the better of him sometimes.
Hi, i wouldnt give up with the other 2 greyhounds. Maybe try doing it at home. Just have it lying around at home and everytime they go on it by themselves give them a treat. If they get off thats fine but if they get on again they get treats and even more if they stay on. Really quickly they will love getting on it cause it predicts good things happening. Then maybe slowly start moving it while they are on and reward for staying on. Then you can also teach them a command for staying on. Only then should you take it outside and practice very slowly while giving a lot of high value treats. They didnt stay on because you went to fast so it spooked them. Everytime something like that happens you have to go back to the last step and reinforce that more. Also notice how with the first dog you used a lot of treats and he stayed on but with the others you didnt use any treats and they left immediately. In their minds its strange and moves so they dont have a reason to stay on. If you make it a predictor for good things they will stay on. You just have to take your time and dont give up on first try. Hope you keep trying, they would have a lot of fun kayaking :]
You give greyt advice! We did run out of treats quickly but I do like to reinforce frequently. Marty has a lot of other anxiety we're working through and doesn't handle strange places well, so I don't think he's a good fit for paddling adventures. This was on our property, so Marty felt a bit more comfortable already. He may learn to enjoy the SUP here at home, but that's as far as I think we'dgo with it. Niles on the other hand is a more confident dog and handles different situations very well!
Niles is the best boy!
lovely
Fun experiment. I never thought about what it would take to entice a dog onto a paddle board and that some would take to it and others wouldn't.
