    I didn’t grow up riding street bikes, I grew up running from the cops on my dirt bike, so getting an adv/dual sport, I feel like I’m doing something illegal just by riding around.

    I hear you brother! I'm north of you ~ 40 miles, and I went out after the rain the day before yesterday on state game area dirt roads and was surprised how tight I could squeeze the bars! As soon as the front end started reacting to wet ruts by swerving and shaking, I knew instantly that I was going way too fast, maybe 45. Even though I had cut my teeth on single track, like you I have been on the pavement the past 40 yrs and had forgotten the ways of dirt and gravel. Looking back, I realize that the road was not in good condition for a dirt road and has piles of loose dirt mixed with ruts, and I should have been much more cautious while out exploring. I have 150 miles on this thing and that coupled with the stock tires that are road biased, led to a learning moment. I am just glad that this lesson was not from the school of hard knocks, as I was able to keep the bike upright. I enjoy your adventures and join you in the spirit of exploration and freedom.

      Appreciate that and sure is a lot of fun. My challenge right now is finding some great roads in addition to what I am exploring around here. Ride safe!

    2:15 Had a similar issue with my shifter.
    1st option: Go to Happy-Trail (a dirt/dual sport/adventure motorcycle oriented online store) and pick up an extended 1 inch shifter for ~$55 USD before taxes.
    2. Free option if you haven't busted out the tools: Adjust the shift lever on the spline and go up a couple notches, unfortunately there's a side piece that blocks the shifter from being moved upwards (skywards) enough for me and a size 16 motorcross style boot
    3. Free option, no tools needed, boots recommended. Simply shift differently.
    Need to go down? Simple, go down like standsrd.
    Need to go up? Put your left foot in front of the shifter, and kick it backwards/upwards with the heel of your boot.
    No faffing about with tools for minimal change, no $50+ USD needed for just only 1 inch longer, just shift different. You'll get used to it after.... I'd say 2 days?

      @bodeanaventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Moto and I actually got a center stand from Happy-Trail, good experience. I checked their site few weeks back and extended shifter was back ordered. Think I will check again and adjust the spline up a few inches as you suggested. Thanks!

    Great video. I am not an experienced rider at all but thanks to a friend I am interested in getting an adventure bike. I'm 54 and only 5'9" so alot of the adv bikes are too tall for me. I'm leaning towards the Honda cb500x right now.

    Its a whole nother world on a dual purpose bike!...I run 50/50 knoby tires and am pretty comfortable running in a corner at speed...it does take a bit for the courage to build!...great to see you out hittin the dirt!...stay safe...ride safe!😎👍🤙👍🤙🇨🇦

    There are roads we have never seen on the street bike, on the dual sport it adds a whole other level. Once you get a little more familiar with the bike you will hit it harder. My Pan Am is a different animal from the 80/20 to the Anakee wilds they to me are more a 30/70, very aggressive off road tread. Scary on the street. Glad you are enjoying the new bike.

    • @bodeanaventures
      @bodeanaventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree Pete...the bike feels real stable on dirt to me and just a different ride on the pavement that I am used too

    Exactly, klr is for going slow and enjoying the ride in the view. If you’re in a hurry, you take a different motorcycle. At least that’s what I do. Cheers.

    The stiffer turning is the 21" front wheel. It gets more pronouced once you upgrade to tubless 50/50 tires.
    Wait until you start going offroad standing.
    At 5'8" I love sitting up high when on the highway.

    There's so much I want to ride that's not really accessible for me on the Victory or the dirt-bike. I will be adding an ADV sooner or later... Luckily for me, I'll get into ADV riding pre-packaged with skillz 😎

    2:45 lol, sorry for multiple comments (helps algorithm though right? lol)
    But about turning. Learn a bit about counter-leaning, I'd recommend the FortNine video titled "You're leaning wrong" or whatever, OR looking at how some motorcycle cops go through the competition courses that are tight weaves.
    Simply put, if you're going on a right turn, lean bike right (but counter steer like normal, DON'T change that lol) and lean your torso left, swivel at your hips.
    You'll be able to:
    1. Change directions faster (think like Motocross)
    2. See more of what's in front of you when turning (vs. leaning on right side of the bike (motogp style) when turning right, you sacrifice some visibility to the left)
    3. It's also just some good hip exercise and keeps you flexible at the hips lol.

    • @bodeanaventures

      Appreciate that and years of street riding habits…..

    • @MotoDash1100
      @MotoDash1100 ปีที่แล้ว

      @bodeanaventures Yeah, no problem and great video!
      You can get a slightly tighter circle and U-turn when you lean bike but leep your torso counter-leaning. Ryan from FortNine explains it better than I can.

    Hehe, 1:40 , sounds like you need the KLR650 S model, for shorter riders :p
    Joking, 6'5" myself, I can flat foot it, and swing leg from the right side no issue (easier than left side for me, starting on higher side vs. leg having to gradually go higher)
    I'd recommend putting right foot on right peg, left foot flat on the ground, pushing yourself up (may feel like pushing down with right foot, just keep your hands on handlebars and partially push yourself up by pushing down/holding on handlebars if that makes sense.
    Lastly, once you have right foot on right peg, hands on handlebars, push yourself up and simultaneously throw the left leg over.
    Joking aside, mounting the bike with a foot on the peg is how your see short female riders (5ft ish) mount big bikes (Itchy Boots, a motorcyclist dual sport female trainer (forgot her name though), Doodle on a motorcycle, etc)

      Idk, I’m 6’5” tall and I always mount my bike with my left foot on the left peg. Just like getting on a horse. I dismount the same way. Now on my Harley or my Victory I just throw a leg over. But then again I’m getting old and don’t flex as good as I once did.

    So my history on motorbikes is confined to motocross only. Never ridden a street bike. I like the idea of sitting up high. Planning on getting my license and was thinking of one of the mid size adventure bikes. Does the new KLR 650 fit the mold for an ex motocrosser who wants to do some touring on dirt and pavement?

    • @bodeanaventures
      @bodeanaventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it does mark because it is a true ADV. I know there are a lot of people that do long trips on it. I’m sure it will not be as comfortable as a big touring bike, and it is not the fastest bike in the world, but you could absolutely do it

  • @travisabel6494
    @travisabel6494 ปีที่แล้ว

    I kinda laugh when I hear you talk about how tall the bike is, and you are 6'3". I'm 5'6" and ride a 2016 KLR. all I can say is jump on and ride. Don't let the bike intimidated you. Enjoy the ride and have fun. Good to see people trying new things.

  • @Motoramblings

    One of the best parts of riding off pavement, finding places you can’t ride the street bike!! The only reason I have the VStrom instead of the DR is because of getting to the off pavement stuff.

      @bodeanaventures Just how to get it going how to properly get moving. How to get it rolling after a successful startup from N to 1st
      How to pop it in neutral from 5th gear if you need to engine break and downshift. Slow and detailed since I am autistic so, you have to go very slow and very Thorough in the tutorial.

    Where is the Trail Riding and the Mud??
    I want to see the bike get muddy; not on the streets you ride your Roadking and Roadglide on. 🤷‍♂️
    Take me Trail Riding, Zooming the obstacles that are within that type of discipline. 👍
